About Bob & Tammy Travitz

Tammy & I live just north of Hershey and have lived here all of our lives. We used to come to Mt. Gretna as kids (Tammy's family came for the ice cream at the Jigger Shop, I came to sit at the Mt. Gretna Tabernacle for the Methodist revivals). When we had kids we'd take them to the Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach and the Jigger Shop and bicycle ride with them on the rails and trails that goes through Mt. Gretna. After they were off to college we were looking for something to do and came up with the idea of buying a property in Mt. Gretna to maybe retire there someday. After 2.5 years restoring our first cottage ("One Fine Landing") the restoration bug bit us and we subsequently now have 3 restorations under our belt. We enjoy sharing clean comfortable, modern but with Gretna charm cottage/home with our guests so they too can experience the Mt. Gretna community, charm and all the activities it has to offer.

Bob & Tammy Travitz purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Bob & Tammy Travitz chose Mount Gretna Heights

Tammy & I purchased this cottage in 2014 after doing a complete restoration of our other cottage ("One Fine Landing.") Friends of ours convinced us to purchase it because it was a cottage that was little changed since 1894. It had minimal amenities and only one electrical circuit with just two receptacles, one upstairs and one downstairs. The shower was a rusty old metal enclosure that topped out at my shoulder and with an old water heater beside it. The kitchen was rudimentary and installed probably in the 40's. We saw the potential of restoring this cottage while keeping the old "vintage feel" of an original cottage of 1894 but with modern baths and a modern functioning kitchen. As you can see in the pictures we feel we have achieved this goal and enjoy staying in this cottage when it's not rented.

What makes this cottage unique

It's in the heart of Mt. Gretna Pennsylvania where people can enjoy all types of music, plays, musicals, kids programs and wonderful local restaurants. Even though we have a great tree canopy that keeps the area cool, the cottage has central air for those occasional dog days of summer that you sometimes get here in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

We fell in love with "While We're At It" as soon as we crossed the threshold!

  • 5 of 5

Cottage porch life at "While We're At It" under the oaks and evergreens and all things Chataqua treated us well. We enjoyed experiencing the magic of Mt. Gretna by day and relaxing at the cottage by evening. It was a splendid week overall; such a charming, lovingly cared for cottage made our week all the more memorable.

Owner's Response: Thanks Jennifer for that wonderful review. Like you said, it's all about the porch life here in Mt. Gretna. Smelling the trees, sitting on the porches and enjoying conversations with folks who pass by. Some are on their way to music at the Tabernacle or on what we call here in Mt. Gretna a "Walk & Talk." Depending on the time of day we end up doing more talking than walking on our excursions. I glad you had a wonderful time and we hope to see you back in Mt. Gretna again soon.

Wonderful cottage in Mt Gretna

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has it all! A great location, tons of charm that is reminiscent of times gone by, and everything you need to have a truly relaxing stay!! Bob and Tammy welcomed us and filled us in on the area. They even called when we had gone as they found something as forgotten and we were able to get back and get it! We would love to come back and would highly recommend this cottage to anyone wanting a great place to stay!

We loved our stay in this adorable cottage! Bob and Tammy were the perfect hosts--friendly, available, and happy to go above and beyond! The house was incredibly clean and thoughtfully appointed. All guests' needs were provided for in advance--everything from flashlights on the nightstand to extra ice in the freezer. The house was the perfect mix of modern-day luxury and Victorian charm. We couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Tammy and Bob for your wonderful hospitality! We look forward to returning soon!

Great Property for Family Fun

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time staying at "While We're At It". The cottage was clean and comfortable. The Mt. Gretna area was nice. The Jigger Shop and beach were two of the highlights for us. The location of the cottage was also great for quick day trips to Amish country and Hersheypark. Highly recommend this cottage!

Great! Clean and Comfortable.

We enjoyed living the porch life!

Easy access to The Hideaway and various hiking trails.

There is not a lot of pantry storage or fridge space, so keep that in mind when you pack your goodies!

Owner's Response: Yes Mt. Gretna is full of things to do even in the off season. I'm glad you enjoyed the porch and had a good time hiking the trails around Mt. Gretna. There is quite a lot to do even in the off season. As far as storage is concerned we're a little surprised that you commented that storage space was limited as yours was just a 3 night stay. Maybe you missed the area under the kitchen bake center which the top is is now used as the coffee bar or the empty hutch in the dining room which can be used for storage. Also in the kitchen the double door "Harry Potter" under the stairs pantry is also a good place to store dry goods. In total renovations of old 1800's homes it's always a challenge to maximize the space you are given. Here in Mt. Gretna your not allowed to build additions outside of your home footprint so it makes for even more challenging designs. While renovating we did try a full size fridge but it overwhelmed the kitchen area and no walk through or open floor plan would've been possible. Folks are surprised at the efficient use of space and that we even got a dishwasher in the cottage. This cottage has been on the Mt. Gretna tour of homes twice because of its example of how to renovate a cottage but still keep the Mt. Gretna charm. In any antique restoration everything is a compromise. We always strive for our guests to give us 5 star reviews and we're disappointed we did not receive that because of design restrictions.

A tranquil place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 5 women chose to stay in the Mt. Gretna campground initially due to the history of the cottages. There was not one moment of the experience we would change. The 4 bedroom, 2 bath home was perfect for our group. Even had a chance to meet the owners who have done an exquisite job along with their carpenter friend in renovating this historic cottage. Artsy community with owners who take pride in maintaining the nostalgia of the area.
