Located directly on Yal Ku lagoon, you have direct (free) access to the marvelous snorkeling with schools of tropical fish. The complex features an outdoor pool at Casa Romero, and individual heated rooftop pools on each of the townhouses.
Tucked in the relaxed atmosphere which is uniquely North Akumal, you will have plenty to do, but you may decide to just relax.
YAL KU LAGOON: A true jewel of Mexico, Yal Ku Lagoon offers magnificent snorkeling for both the novice and experienced swimmer. Protected from the ocean waves, you can float along and see schools of sergeant fish, blue tangs, and others. Many varieties of parrot fish chomp on the algae on the rocks while angel fish and others swim about. You can also swim towards the inlet to the see: a shallow sandy area where you can sometimes see a turtle or a ray. Other great snorkeling and diving are available nearby including in caves and cenotes as well as the nearby coral reefs.
We had been visiting Yal Ku Lagoon for almost 15 years and always loved staying in Akumal, especially directly on the lagoon. We traveled extensively and found ourselves saying, 'this is nice, but it isn't Akumal', or 'it isn't Yal Ku'. So when we found a villa for sale directly on the lagoon, we could not pass it up. After restoring Casa Delfin, we were relaxing in the rooftop pool at night wondering what we were going to do next. We both looked over at Casa Romero which was in terrible shape. Two weeks later we had an agreement to purchase it and renovations began only a few months later.
The Owner purchased this house in 2007
The Romero Estate is the only privately owned complex of homes on the Riviera Maya - plus it is on the lagoon. We could not pass up the opportunity to restore Casa Romero to its proper grandeur and to convert all the houses to luxurious accommodations.
If you have ever been to North Akumal, you know it maintains the laid-back atmosphere that has gone from so many places. We have the feeling of belonging to a community. In addition to the magnificent snorkeling in Yal Ku, one of the things that we like the best is that Akumal is enjoyed by Mexicans as well as tourists. We have gotten to know the many local restaurants and enjoy eating out as being able to cook our own food and entertain friends and family.

Travel insurance can protect you from many losses you might otherwise incur because of unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injuries, and mandatory evacuations. We had an outstanding time at Yal Ku Lagoon. Blue Tang B Luxury Townhouse was beautifully decorated with local artifacts such as handpainted Mexican tiles, textiles and sculptures, so you felt immersed in the area. The rooms were spacious and all well equipped. The private decktop pool was a very special feature, the views, and the snorkeling right out the door were fabulous. I am an artist and could paint right from the deck in all directions. We saw so many fish ih such an amazing environment of calm water, and the sea turtles are not far away. Not everything was maintained in tip top shape, but that was no problem as it was part of the laid back, relaxing atmosphere. You felt a bit native, rather than in an over done, artifical resort. Restaurants were within walking distance. The owners and their employees were very friendly and responsive to any needs--including getting out flat tire fixed. We have the best memories and would love to go back. Have already been recommending it to friends.
We were lucky enough to have Nancy and David living in the house next to us, so we had first class information and tips which was very helpful and friendly.
Cleaning lady, caretaker, pool boy, gardener, everyone one was very efficient and polite. (I would just ask for a little less cleaning time, I am sure one hour a day would be enough!)
Everything beautifully organised. Amazing house decoration bought and made by Nancy with a colourful exotic taste!
The houses are very secluded and safe right on the edge of the lagoon. You feel at the end of the world, though shops, restaurants and any distraction you can think about are close at hand.
In fact, we came as a couple and found all the comfort, quality, peace and quiet we like but we are thinking of coming back with children and grand children as there is distraction for every age just nearby, without forgetting the amusing roof pool!
Well done David for all the hard work!
My husband, daughter, her friend and I spent a glorious week at Blue Tang and had an absolutely perfect and relaxing vacation.
The property was very clean, well maintained, and unlike other vacation homes we have rented in the area, has all the amenities listed in excellent working order.
The photos do not really do the property justice as it is even more spacious and welcoming than the photos depict.
Having the Yal Ku Lagoon literally footsteps from your door make this a real hidden gem. The snorkeling is simply fantastic and we were fortunate enough to swim with turtles and even spot a massive spotted eagle ray!
The rooftop pool offers a great respite with a nice view and calming tropical breeze.
The staff genuinely care that everything is as perfect as can be for the guests and do a really great job to ensure your comfort.
We made use of the bicycles, grill and all the well stocked kitchen items to prepare our breakfast, lunches and a few dinners.
The restaurants in the area are well priced, convenient and serve a variety of options and we found the service very good.
If you are looking for a totally relaxing vacation away from the usual crowded resorts this is definitely the spot for you. We had total privacy in a beautiful location with all the comforts of home.
Needless to say we are already planning a return trip in late fall and after being home less than a week, I have 5 couples lined up for a group trip in 2010!
The only thing that could have improved our stay is if we booked for 2 weeks rather than 1.
Thank you David and Nancy for sharing your home away from home with us!
If you already know North Akumal, you know that is a family-friendly, quiet place where you can relax. With the fully equipped kitchens, you can choose to fix your own meals, hire your caretaker, Rene, to fix you some special dinners you are sure to remember, go out to any of the area restaurants, or have catered meals brought in. Many of the restaurants are directly on the beaches of Half Moon bay and Akumal bay: you rarely need a reservation, you will always be welcomed, and there is never a dress code. You may also want to go to any of there nearby towns or attractions including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Xelha, Xcarat, and more. You can hardly find any better place for snorkeling: both in Yal Ku Lagoon where you have your own private direct entrances, and along the reefs: rent a boat or just swim out to magnificent coral reefs teeming with fish. There are also several places to take Padi certified diving lessons. You will be diving among the fish on your very first day.
