Newly constructed (2011) wooded log cabin retreat on the West Branch of the Ausable River.
This retreat has views of surrounding mountains.
Keywords: Cabin, Cottage on West Branch of Ausable River. Great fishing and hunting and only minutes from Whiteface Mountain.
Very quiet, relaxing, and private. A nice place for a couple to get away.
We arrived to find the apartment unclean to the point we had to clean the bathroom and kitchen ourselves, remove dirty towels and clothes, remove a silver dollar sized hair ball from the bathtub and another hairball from the sink, wash dishes, clean the sink, toilet and bathtub and use the only towel we could find that wasn't dirty. There is no on site washing machine so we could not clean other towels and had to share one towel between two people. It was unclear if the bed linens were clean so we slept on top of them. I photographed all of it because it is too hard to believe this was real.
I called the owner and send him two messages. He did not respond to either one. I am now filing a complaint with VRBO and seeking a refund of cleaning deposit and partial refund of rental fees.
Stay here at your own risk.
My friend and I went up for a weekend of triathlon training. Cabin was perfect for our needs. Off the beaten path but accessible to Wilmington, Whiteface and Lake Placid within 20-30 minutes. Cabin is about 5 miles off 86. So in theory, we could have ridden our bikes right onto the Ironman course (except for the little bit of dirt roads).
Fully stocked cozy studio cabin. Kitchen had more gadgets than I have at home! Keurig, regular coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender and gas stove to name a few, plus a gas grill and fire pit. More cleaning supplies than two type A triathletes could imagine using. Towels and extra pillows and blankets were also available. Garage was perfect size for Honda CRV with tow hitch bike rack to fit. This was super convenient!!
It rained all weekend for us so we didn't get to play with the fire pit. You may want to bring your own wood to burn. There seemed to be some available but it's something to think about. I didn't notice sticks for marshmellows either.
We took a hike down to the river as well. Very steep and trail was slightly overgrown but as long as you have a decent sense of direction (and adventure!) you'll be fine. It's gorgeous there and worth it for some good pics.
There is a DVD player but movie selection is limited. Bring your favorite movie or two should you find yourself needing to pass the time. In addition to DVD, the TV is set up for Direct TV and there is also a WII game system.
Based on previous recommendation of "easy to lock yourself out", we left one key in the lock box just in case we got locked out.
Double check hot water when you get there. Hot water heater was set to "vacation mode" when we arrived but we didn't know until we needed to shower (our bad). We received immediate assistance though!
All in all, great place to stay! I can't wait to bring my husband up for a romantic weekend getaway!
We loved the cabin and the area.
~ 25 mins from Whiteface Mountain
~ 30 mins from Lake Placid town
Cabin is very clean and had everything you would need, such as a propane BBQ, firewood, satellite TV for the evenings, AC.
The hike down to the Ausable river wasn't too bad and the dogs enjoyed the water.
Feedback for the owner is that it is very easy to lock yourself out of the cabin if you leave the key inside and shut the door as it can be locked and you can still open the door from the inside so you don't remember the handle is in the locked position.
My wife and I stayed for three nights and four days. This is the place if you want privacy, we only seen two cars go by the entire time we were there. Woke up to a doe and two fawn's in the back yard our first morning, great views of near by mountains and the relaxing sound of the river close by. Its a little drive to lake Placid and other near by attractions but the drive is so beautiful and relaxing we didn't mind at all. Believe me its worth the drive to not be in a little shack beside the main road (lots of those all over). Nicely decorated to give it that cabin feel. Cabin lacked nothing as far as kitchen, linens and activities for those rainy days. Would like to mention that there is a fire pit and a Air conditioner that was not listed so that was a nice surprise. Access to the Ausable river from the cabin is pretty steep and I would not recommend for small children or the elderly but, with all the other places to see the river with easy access this should not be a reason to not pick this place. It is more of a studio style cabin so if you bringing kids or another couple don't expect night time privacy. For a couples retreat this is the perfect choice.
We loved our stay in this cute, comfortable, nicely equipped studio cabin. The property had great views of the river/mountains and lots of privacy. It was also perfectly located for our High Peaks hiking adventures.
