About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

At Grandview on the Bay, we have two pet-friendly cottages that provide the ultimate for relaxation on Mathews County’s Chesapeake Bay VA: the Crab Shack and the Fish House (VRBO Listing 365572 which is our kid-friendly cottage). We’ve spent over a decade designing and renovating our property Grandview to give guests impeccable access to nature, relaxation and privacy. In May 2011, we finished the construction of the luxurious “Shack” complete with king size bedroom and gourmet kitchen. From your roof top deck, enjoy expansive views of the East River. Watch the sun rise over the water with your morning coffee on your private balcony. Crave relaxation? We’ve got it! Find what suits your vacation style best – swimming in the pool, fishing or crabbing on the pier, kayaking, biking, bird watching, strolling around the coastal landscaped pathways or lounging in chairs and hammocks located throughout our three acre property. Grandview has excellent access to the Lower Chesapeake for sailors, intracoastal cruisers & fisherman with dockage for small boats & deep water anchorage for larger craft. We hope your time at Grandview will show you why we came to Mathews for a weekend and decided to stay a lifetime!

The Crab Shack was designed for comfort and relaxation. The second level of the Shack contains your bedroom with a king size bed as well as a living room area with comfortable sofa to sink into while enjoying the large screen flat panel tv, featuring satellite tv with the professional football package and a 200+ DVD collection. Bathroom is located on the 1st floor. Love to cook? Master Chef Karla designed the Shack’s gourmet kitchen with cooks in mind and she loves to share great recipes for locally available seafood. Step outside and pick fresh herbs from the garden. Think swings are just for kids or the outdoors? We’re big kids at heart and couldn’t resist adding a swing to the downstairs living area. Hop into the swing and soak in the view, watching the tide roll away. Looking to create your own sunset celebration? Grab a drink and head up to Crow's Nest, our rooftop deck with stunning views of the East River and kick back at our LL Bean dining table/chairs topside or stretch out in the lounge chairs.

What would vacation be without swimming! Refresh yourself at our swimming pool with bar area, double hammock swing, loungers, rocking chairs, dining table & grill. Can’t get enough of the water view then try your hand at good ole fashioned crabbing with chicken legs and strings on the pier or relax in the Adirondack chairs while the crab pots do the work for you. Revive yourself with a nap in the hammock in our mint garden (great for tea or mint juleps/mojitos). Quiet time abounds as well so relax in one of our reading areas or just kick back and rest in the lounge chairs located throughout the property. Bird watchers love viewing dozens of water fowl and bird species including our resident heron, egret and osprey. Stroll around the pathways and neighborhood and enjoy our wildlife and gardens with coastal landscaping. If you want to try an adventure, take our kayaks for a paddle and our bikes for a spin. Love fishing? Bring your boat, tie up to our pier and join in catching some of the hundreds of flounder and rockfish garnered by our guests and resident expert, Capt Dave who is happy to provide local fishing intelligence.

If you want some sand in your toes, we are a short drive from Haven Beach, Aaron Beach and Bethel Beach in Mathews with great birding, shell gathering, strolling. If you’re looking for a day trip, we are an hour away from Colonial Williamsburg & Busch Gardens, Yorktown and horse racing at Colonial Downs. We are centrally located between Virginia Beach and Washington DC and a mere 90 minutes from Richmond. We are proud to be a Virginia Green facility!

While smoking is not permitted in the cottage, guests are permitted to smoke outdoors in approved areas. Courtesy laundry service provided for week long guests. Spend less time packing and more time playing! At Grandview, we provide many items that other rentals make you bring or rent. Email us with any needs or questions. Let us know how we can make your time in Mathews County GRAND!

About Karla Scanlan

We (Dave and Karla) are the proud 'parents' of our yellow Labs, 12 yr old You'reNothingtoMeNow Fredo and 2 yr old Skink, (we were also blessed for 13 yrs with Deputy Festus, our chocolate lab, who you'll see in a lot of our photos) and the delighted uncle and aunt of ten nieces/nephews living in VA and CA. The labs have traveled w/us on vacations down to the Florida Keys and up to Bar Harbor (where we honeymooned nearly three decades ago). All the kids in our lives regularly remind us how amazing the rural life is and how lucky we are to be so immersed in nature. For our primary jobs, Dave runs an orthodontic lab & Karla is a mkt research analyst. Don't hold it against us but we're die hard Dallas Cowboys fans since the late 70s..hence the importance of having the professional football package available to all our guests in the fall!

Karla Scanlan purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Karla Scanlan chose USA

In 1998, my husband Dave and I became the third owners of Grandview which was built in 1946 by master carpenter John Mason. At purchase, we found a hand made sign in the shed indicating that Mr Mason had named his home Grandview. We loved the name and kept it! After four years of being weekenders, we moved to Mathews permanently to enjoy the laid back life style. We now live at Grandview year round and are on site to provide local fishing expertise or help plan your trip to Mathews County. In early 2011, we renovated the original owner's cottage to create the Crab Shack as a stand alone vacation rental on our property, Grandview.

What makes this cottage unique

Grandview quickly works its magic on guests with its privacy, abundant nature and relaxation. The birdlife is simply amazing (Karla's dad is an ornithologist so we have a great appreciation) and on a clear night you can't believe the stars! From our pier you can catch fish or crabs or put on some waders and pick some oysters. Dave's even caught a snapping turtle and a gar from the pier! Mathews County's culture is a bit like the Florida Keys (which we love) in that you quickly adapt to island time. You stop worrying about all your emails and to do lists and time is measured by meal time, cocktail time and nap time. Our double hammock swing poolside was purchased on our trip to Key West. We specialize in getting people to relax, take a deep breath and enjoy nature in all its glory. Mathews County doesn't even have a stoplight but we have 90 miles of water trails great for kayaking and boating and nine coastal trails that are part of Virginia's Birding & Wildlife Trails system. For bicyclists, the Tour de Chesapeake is held annually in Mathews offering bike routes of varying lengths.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dave and Karla,

As I write, I'm rocking in the hammock chair looking out the screen door. Cooler weather came in and the morning is wonderfully cooler. Today is our last morning here. Soon we'll be packing to return for reality work & back to school. We had such a good family break from all the hectic schedules. What a wonderful gift you offer people. How often can you watch the sun rise with your daughter because you both want to instead of the wary eyed parent who has had no sleep or sharing in your son's first fish preparing lesson and watching him eat it that night. We had an osprey mother protecting her nest from the four kayakers. She thought we were going to climb the tree. Lots of fun memories. Spartacus got on the dock with vanilla wafers (always my favorite). 95lb Doberman that's a chicken :) We will return for more memories! It was a well needed reality break.

Pure Relaxation!

My husband and I had been looking forward to getting away for a few days to recharge after a long winter. When we pulled up to the Crab Shack all of our stress melted away. Everything was perfect: the view, the house, the grounds, all of it. We enjoyed grilling and eating up on the deck, going for a ride in Captain Dave's boat, taking long bike rides, kayaking and the fantastic hospitality from Karla. I almost cried when we had to leave. We are already planning a return trip this summer.

My husband and I, with our peppy puppy, Luke, had the best time during our getaway to the Crab Shack!

From the friendly and responsive pre-stay communication, to the warm, hospitable greeting we received from Karla upon arrival, to the daily casual and informative visits and puppy play dates (their pup played and played with ours!), we couldn't have hand-selected better owners and caretakers.

The Crab Shack was super clean, tastefully and artistically furnished with distinctive and colorful decor, well-appointed and arrangements were thoughtfully generous and accommodating, throughout. For example, warm comfy robes awaited us, and - often a challenge to find ideal bedding for us both due to my mild back problems - this lodging offered a sleep number bed so it was great that I could set my side for the right softness... not to mention the special heating element! The bathroom had a special heater - fabulous for awakening on our cold mornings... there were even marked favorites in an open cookbook, inviting engagement. Our hosts were eager to provide us our own map of the locale, and we had a fabulous time dining outside with Luke at Merroir after jogging along the beautiful mystical sand bars at Bethel Beach as Luke galloped through the shallow waters in pursuit of low-flying, teasing, birds...

And, THE VIEW! - THE VIEW!!! It's beautiful!...

Sunrises, moving water and forests and gardens - views available from 3 separate floors, harmonious nature, serenity, convenience and feeling well-cared for and attended to, in a lovely, lovely setting with some of the best folks (and dogs!) you'll find - You Have ARRIVED. Don't pass up this vacation experience; its likely to quickly become - as for us - only the first of many... (we're scanning for summertime dates now!)

Property that Allows Dogs Better then Expected!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful relaxing vacation despite the rainy weather. The Crab House was well appointed and our Greyhound Bella was treated as a special guest with beds, bowls and a basket filled with treats and toys. Days were spent reading in the hammock, playing games, working on a jig saw puzzle, eating and shopping! We had a yummy breakfast at Lynne's Family Restaurant, great dinner and ice cream at Richardson's Cafe and scrumptious Thai cuisine at Bangkok Noi in Gloucester. At Mathew's Bay School Community Arts Center, we enjoyed the art vibe by chatting with an artist bringing in her new work. I found two pieces that needed to come home with us! The owners of the Crab Shack were friendly and concerned with the lack of sunshine but alas, no one that I know of can change the weather. I'm already checking for dates to reserve the Crab Shack in 2017!

Incredible! Waterfront home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

I’m pretty sure our leaving is a temporary thing. We love the crab shack, a beautiful ‘home away from home’ for any of us lucky enough to find it. It far exceeded any expectations. Olive oil for cooking? Yes. Great knives and pans? Yes. Comfy bathrobes? Yes. In fact it’s so perfect it's made us rethinking living in Matthews. Perhaps Williamsburg will be a better all-around fit and the Crab Shack will become our new waterfront home. Stay tuned.

We have such wonderful memories of our stay there… one evening as I was cooking dinner my husband asked me to come out into the darkened garden. It was alight with fireflies. 

So nice to have the family dogs nearby. Gentle and sweet. Helped as we were missing our cat.

Karla and Dave have thought of everything to make you immediately comfortable and at ease. They are amazing hosts. We really love this place.

In a word, WOW!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this idyllic setting. I was sad to leave. Karla and Dave provided every possible thing that we could have needed. They were both so kind and welcoming.

The crab shack is extremely dog friendly and in pristine condition (not normally the case with a dog friendly house). We arrived to a welcome basket of dog toys and treats. There were dog beds on every floor and a food and water bowl. There was also an outdoor dog bed with a cooling mat on it.

For humans, there were kayaks to use, beach bikes, and beach chairs. There was a huuuuuuge selection of movies to choose from and also direct TV. The kitchen has every size pot and cooking tool that you could ever need. We enjoyed dinner and sunsets on the roof top deck and breakfast looking out over the water.

This is a great spot if you enjoy paddle boarding. We brought our paddle boards and wandered out to the dock every day for a little water "stroll." We also used the beach bikes to ride down to mobjack to look at the pretty houses.

If you like nature, peace, and water this is the place to be. We will return to this place in the future!

Beautiful, comfortable and relaxing get away.

Grandview on the Bay is an amazing vacation spot. It truly does have a grand view of the water with abundant wildlife and lovely star lit evenings. The quite surroundings allow you to enjoy the frogs in the night and the birds singing during the day. Our stay was filled with kayaking, photography, walking and eating out at charming and delicious eateries. Breakfast on the very top of the Crab Shack gave an incredible view of the water and the beautifully landscaped property of Grandview.

Karla and Dave, our hosts, were friendly and gracious. They have thought of everything you might need during your stay. Never have I stayed a rental vacation property that was better equipped and stocked.

We shall return, in fact we booked another stay while we were there! Thanks Karla and Dave for a most wonderful anniversary.
