Way more cons than pros

  • 2 of 5

So, let me start with the good stuff. The view from the deck is beautiful and the proximity to Acadia is great! Now, on to the disappointments. In my opinion and from renting many houses at around this price point, this property is way over priced. First of all, we were stunned at how loud the traffic noise was from the road that the house is on. Although the driveway is relatively set back (you can still see cars from the driveway) from the road, the house really is right on the road. And it is not a little country back road. It is a busy road in Mt. Desert Island. By the way, the previous reviewer mentioned bike riding on this road... Absolutely not. We didn't see one bike rider on this road the entire week. It is entirely too dangerous. Go to the carriage roads instead. They are spectacular! So that was very disappointing. We drove 6 hours thinking the house was going to be serene and quiet and it was louder than our home ( also at night you would get headlights coming right into the house every time a car passed by) Now on to the actual house. It is in dire need of a make over. It is extremely dated and worn. Neither of the two small upstairs bedrooms had any where to put clothing and the dresser drawers (only 2 provided) in the master were almost impossible to open. The smallest bedroom was so poorly ventilated and dangerously hot that my son ended up sleeping on the floor in the loft area. The faucet in the upstairs bathroom is starting to rot and the vinyl floor is coming up near the shower. It was not pleasant. Windows didn't stay up and a screen door was broken downstairs. Also, they provided not even a half a roll of paper towel, virtually no dish soap and the absolute bare minimum of toilet paper. We were shocked. Like I said earlier, at this price point none of these things should be happening.

However, I would HIGHLY recommend Acadia National Park!! It was breathtakingly beautiful! We will definitely be back, just not to this house.

Owner's Response: The owners and I,(the rental agent,) are so glad you enjoyed the view and the proximity to the park and we might add that the cottage is central to the other villages and the many shops and restaurants. I am a native of the island, and have spent many hours, hiking, biking and running the trails and roads, and the 20 mile route from Southwest Harbor around Tremont and though Pretty Marsh Road, is one of my favorite bike routes. I have seen many other biker on the same routes. Though I haven't been at the cottage in the evenings, the owners family love listening to the loons and the peepers, while enjoying the skies and shooting stars, from the deck on a clear night ~ The 2nd floor has an open area surrounding the bedrooms(a great place to relax and sleep) and bath, and there are many windows there along with the windows in the bedrooms for ventilation. There is a bedroom with1 window but there are fans , and this has been an extremely hot summer We do our best to make all renters happy and comfortable. We re sorry that you did not experience the enjoyment that our June tenants enjoyed ~

Wonderful home to explore all Acadia and MDI

  • 5 of 5

This house had everything we needed for our family and two dogs to insure a great vacation. We were minutes to Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, South West Harbor and Echo Lake. The windows offered a beautiful view of Somes Pond and deer, ducks, ermine, red squirrels all dropped by to visit.

It had a great dining room table for games & puzzles and enough private space to get away and read a book while others were busy around the main room. The house was clean and had all the utensils and pots we needed for cooking at home when we weren't out getting some of the great local food.

Pretty Marsh road was a nice road for walking the dogs and taking an early morning bike ride.

Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park are full of places to hike, bike, and sight see. The multiple mountains to climb could fill everyday. The shops, restaurants and museums are great for visiting on rainy days or any day. Ocean and lake activities are a special part of Acadia and kayak, canoe, paddle boards and can be rented at many parts of the island. If you prefer to see the park on bikes ~ there are several bike shops, too ~ There are too many activities to list here but you can stop at the Acadia National Parks Head Quarters and Visitors Center at the head of the island on route 3 to get information.
