Water almost surrounds this fantastic, ultra spacious cottage! Somes Pond Cottage is very private, with lovely views overlooking Somes Pond, including breathtaking sunrises. Nestled in the tall pines, at the end of a secluded driveway, this well preserved cottage offers a central location to all towns on Mount Desert Island. Long Pond (a much larger pond)is less than a mile down the road and is across the street from kayak, canoe, etc., rentals ~
The large babbling brook with pool, suround the back and side of the cottage and then flows into Somes Pond.
With an interior that includes 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths, this is a perfect size for many vacationing parties. The convenient kitchen is fully equipped and there is dining for up to 10, in case you entertain guests. Also, included in the open 1st floor is a large living area with cable TV, a DVD and CD player and Wi-Fi. A gas fireplace adds ambience and warmth on cooler nights. The waterside, spacious deck is( like another room to the cottage) ~ the best place to enjoy outside dining or just lounging, while viewing the mountains, pond, flora and fauna ~ Come to Somes Pond Cottage ~ you will be so glad you did!
Joanne Beal has been the owner of this cottage ever since it has been on Homeaway ~ many people come back just to see Joanne ~ a friendly Maine born lady!
So, let me start with the good stuff. The view from the deck is beautiful and the proximity to Acadia is great! Now, on to the disappointments. In my opinion and from renting many houses at around this price point, this property is way over priced. First of all, we were stunned at how loud the traffic noise was from the road that the house is on. Although the driveway is relatively set back (you can still see cars from the driveway) from the road, the house really is right on the road. And it is not a little country back road. It is a busy road in Mt. Desert Island. By the way, the previous reviewer mentioned bike riding on this road... Absolutely not. We didn't see one bike rider on this road the entire week. It is entirely too dangerous. Go to the carriage roads instead. They are spectacular! So that was very disappointing. We drove 6 hours thinking the house was going to be serene and quiet and it was louder than our home ( also at night you would get headlights coming right into the house every time a car passed by) Now on to the actual house. It is in dire need of a make over. It is extremely dated and worn. Neither of the two small upstairs bedrooms had any where to put clothing and the dresser drawers (only 2 provided) in the master were almost impossible to open. The smallest bedroom was so poorly ventilated and dangerously hot that my son ended up sleeping on the floor in the loft area. The faucet in the upstairs bathroom is starting to rot and the vinyl floor is coming up near the shower. It was not pleasant. Windows didn't stay up and a screen door was broken downstairs. Also, they provided not even a half a roll of paper towel, virtually no dish soap and the absolute bare minimum of toilet paper. We were shocked. Like I said earlier, at this price point none of these things should be happening.
However, I would HIGHLY recommend Acadia National Park!! It was breathtakingly beautiful! We will definitely be back, just not to this house.
This house had everything we needed for our family and two dogs to insure a great vacation. We were minutes to Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, South West Harbor and Echo Lake. The windows offered a beautiful view of Somes Pond and deer, ducks, ermine, red squirrels all dropped by to visit.
It had a great dining room table for games & puzzles and enough private space to get away and read a book while others were busy around the main room. The house was clean and had all the utensils and pots we needed for cooking at home when we weren't out getting some of the great local food.
Pretty Marsh road was a nice road for walking the dogs and taking an early morning bike ride.
Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park are full of places to hike, bike, and sight see. The multiple mountains to climb could fill everyday. The shops, restaurants and museums are great for visiting on rainy days or any day. Ocean and lake activities are a special part of Acadia and kayak, canoe, paddle boards and can be rented at many parts of the island. If you prefer to see the park on bikes ~ there are several bike shops, too ~ There are too many activities to list here but you can stop at the Acadia National Parks Head Quarters and Visitors Center at the head of the island on route 3 to get information.
