I was born in Hawaii and have a large extended family here. However, I was raised in California, but returned to Hawaii when Bob and I retired.
Beverly Moodie purchased this house in 2009
Lopaka's Family Lodge was originally built to accomodate mainland family and friends. It was named in memory of my late husband, Bob (Lopaka is the Hawaiian name for Robert).
It is such a lovely setting though that it seemed sad to leave it unoccupied when friends and family weren't visiting. That's when I got the idea to offer it as a vacation rental so it can be enjoyed by others.
This has been a joyful experience for me. I've met so many wonderful people from all over the world and my life has been enriched by getting to know them. Some have returned several times and I count them amongst those I call "friends".
Lopaka's Lodge was like 'home away from home'. Bev thought of everything, from coffee and creamer for our first morning after arrival to canvas shopping bags to use for food shopping! The kitchen was very well stocked and the laundry room was fantastic and also fully stocked. Most rentals do not include things like laundry detergent, etc., but Bev's had it all. There were beach towels, sunscreen, umbrellas, the list goes on and on. The lanai was perfect for morning coffee. I especially liked the white rope lights that line the lanai which we turned on every night. They added such atmosphere (along with the coqui frogs serenading us every night)! The location is in a lovely neighborhood, an easy drive to the Volcano National Park which we visited two days and was a highlight of our two weeks. And the Hawaii Botanical Gardens was another highlight--an amazing place. Bev hugged us when we arrived and it felt like we knew her forever! We hope to return someday. Aloha!
Lopaka's Lodge fulfilled our every need. Bev went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. She has every amenity that you would have at home, available for our use. Everything was immaculate! As we were house hunting, we had moments of highs and lows. Coming back every evening to her Lodge, soothed and comforted us.
We will definitely be returning to Hilo and to the Lopaka's Lodge. And of course, we will recommend it to others.
What a perfect place to stay. Take time to read the reviews, you will get a taste of what it is like to stay at Lopaka's Lodge. After my wife and I spent 10 days here we I realize that words and pictures alone can not recreate or describe how fantastic our stay here was. Bev is the most kind, pleasant and thoughtful person anyone could know. Bev genuinely wants to provide a "Home Base" for your stay in Hilo/Hawaii to be flawless and the memory of a lifetime. The 800sq ft. Ohana (built for family) is immaculate. After staying here you will feel like family and want to return like we do. Mahalo Bev
I had just sold a house on the Big Island and was waiting for the keys to the house we bought in Hilo. I was so fortunate that Bev had a week open. It was a retreat from the stress of buying and selling houses! Because I was in-between homes and working I wanted a vacation rental with a full kitchen and laundry. Lopaka's Family Lodge has that and more. This spacious 800 square feet of indoor living space is tastefully furnished and very clean. Here in Hilo where humidity is a problem Lopaka's is fresh and without a hint of mildew that you may find in other vacation rentals. The outdoor lanai is a wonderful space to have breakfast or to have a sunset happy hour. The neighborhood is very desirable and because it's located above downtown Hilo the evenings are cool. This is a very special vacation rental or home away from home. Bev has thought of everything. I would recommend Lopaka's Family Lodge to my own family and friends living on Oahu and the Mainland.
This is my third stay at Bev's, and I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Hilo. It truly feels like I am living in Hilo when I stay at Bev's because it feels like home. It's a private location and Bev absolutely respects your privacy. Bev is very thoughtful and the amount of small things that she remembers and provides for visitors is amazing. The lanai is perfect for early morning coffee, and Bev keeps the lodge immaculate. The location is a short drive from downtown Hilo in a quiet residential neighborhood filled with beautiful, charming houses. I highly recommend this property.
This is my fourth visit to Bevs and as usual everything was perfect! The space was great for the three of us girls and more then enough space for us. Fully stocked and perfect in every way. Bevs the best!!!
