This 4 bed/2 bath vacation rental located in the downtown Garden District of Coeur d'Alene Idaho, easily accommodates eight to ten guests and is updated with bamboo floors, granite counter tops, and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen is stocked with all of the essentials, and all linens are provided.

This home also features two main floor bedrooms in addition to the main floor bath, to accommodate guests who have difficulty with stairs. The third and fourth bedrooms are located on the second floor with the second bathroom. Three bedrooms are furnished with a queen size bed, one with additional bunk beds for those traveling with children, and the fourth has a King sized bed.

The basement is a cozy spot, with a pool table and cable TV for late night entertainment that doesn't disturb the rest of the house. Bring your ipod! We have a stereo system in the basement that allows you to hook up your ipod and listen to your favorite music.

Well behaved pets are always welcome at this home, and they are sure to enjoy the large fenced backyard.

The patio and fire pit offer a great location for a family BBQ.

Why Lauren VanVeelen chose Garden District

We bought this house as our first home when we got married. Since California is difficult and expensive place to buy and we have family in CDA, we thought it would be a great investment to purchase a home there, where we can enjoy vacations with the family and hopefully have a place to retire down the road.

What makes this house unique

The home is walking distance to all of the fun things to do in CDA. It's in a great neighborhood and there are year-round events and activities to enjoy.

Not what it appears

First, I'm giving two stars and not one because I talked to the owner and she seems to be a genuinely nice person who did not realize the condition of her rental - she is in California and it is managed remotely. And also, there was either a mix up with HomeAway that prevented me getting an information email, or it was too complicated to find it on my phone (the emails point to the app, which is not my favorite iPhone app by a mile), and this is not the owner's fault.

When my friend and I got to Coeur d'Alene, I called the owner to ask if we could check in early. She didn't answer and I left a VM. By check-in time I hadn't heard back so my friend and I went to the property. It looked abandoned - dead lawn, dead plants, leaves all over the roof, just a dingy property on a pretty run down street. My friend and I both thought this must not be the right address, but looking inside the window, I could see the living room that matched the pics. There was lockbox - we didn't have the code. I called the owner again, no answer. We "stalked" the owner on Facebook and found her business in California, called there, no answer, left a VM. We had more people on their way to stay with us and we didn't know what to do - we had to get something. I was looking on a competing rental website to try to find a different house at the last minute when the owner finally called back, very apologetic for being in meetings all day and surprised I hadn't received an email from HomeAway with the lockbox code and rental instructions. She told us the code (which we couldn't later remember so couldn't use the lock box) and we entered. Its not the light filled space that appears in the pics. Its dark. Small. The bathrooms had new sinks but the shower downstairs and the tub upstairs were in very poor condition and not very clean. The basement was dark and dank - cool pool table but we never used it. The cable box wouldn't turn on and the wireless didn't work. The grill was unusable - filled with spiders and left over charcoal dust. She got her repair guy to come the next day to fix the cable and wireless, and she bought us a case of beer to make things up, which we appreciated, and the beds are comfortable, but it doesn't change the fact that the property needs attention and is not really what is represented in the pictures. Thankfully we were a small group of guys playing a tennis tourney, and we got by. My wife would never have spent a night there.

Owner's Response: Steve, thank you for your detailed review and your much appreciated feedback. I just wanted to follow up to let you and our future tenants know that the tub and showers have since been restored. We realized that one of our guests at some point stole our torch lamps in the living room, which we have since replaced to take care of the lighting issue. It's been a hot summer so the lawn burned fast without being watered for a week. A sprinkler system has since been installed to avoid issues with the lawn, which was bright green two weeks before your arrival (as displayed in the photos I sent you) and we have had some nice plants installed in the front and rear of the house to brighten it up. A brand new patio set was set up and a new BBQ pit purchased (apparently it was left out in winter weather and rusted up). I also apologize for the issues with the welcome email... we've never had that problem before but I'm assuming it must have been an issue with the Email going to spam?! Hopefully this is the first and last poor review we'll receive.

Nice place, great location.

The house was in a great location, the layout was good and we enjoyed being there. The only "issue" was the lighting inside is really dark, it really needs MORE LIGHT, once the sun goes down it's very dark inside. More lamps, overhead lights or something, otherwise we loved it!

Nice quiet neighborhood and plenty of bedrooms/beds for larger groups.

Nice, clean place but the basement was a bit dank and could use active ventilation. Pool table was a fun addition but a few more chairs would have been nice. Back patio was lovely, BBQ was nice and we picked up wood from a local grocery and enjoyed the patio fire pit. Great space for larger families with an open kitchen/living area. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of pots/pans/plates/glassware and utensils.

Not quite as advertised

We were a group of 6 staying for the 70.3 race weekend and had to pay a premium price per night for this property due to it being race weekend. Initially the home owner wanted us to stay for 7 nights as this was normally the full ironman race weekend and owners can impose this requirement, but for a half ironman, they gave us a reprieve since this was just for the half and we booked so far in advance.

This property is not worth the premium price. The photos in the ad are very strategically taken. The bathrooms were very very dated and are in need of major work (drains don't fully drain upstairs, ceilings have holes in them, and baths are in rough shape). The basement is not 'cosy' and I would describe it as 'musty'. The backyard and front (general curb appeal) is very disappointing. The grass is not in good shape and is basically weeds. There is no table in the back and with random garden hoses strewn about along with a rough bbq, the backyard is not an appealing place.

The place was clean and the beds were comfortable but I think it would be quite crowded with 10 ppl as one bedroom would have 4 ppl (2 in bed and 2 bunks). The kitchen is in good shape but I was disappointed to open the coffee maker and see a mouldy filter with grounds in it. Not the end of the world, but for the price we paid, this was another disappointment.

The location is good but overall, while the listing wasn't untruthful, we were expecting much more than we received.

More than we expected

We spent endless hours online searching for the right house for our holiday vacation. I normally don't write reviews but this house was truly perfect. Great location, great yard, clean on the inside, and well stocked. We had guests visit and there was plenty of space. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your home. The kids enjoyed the snow and it really was the highlight of our week. We hope to make this a yearly tradition.

Nice home, but not very wheelchair accessible

This was one of two homes rented for our family reunion. The location was great! It was easy walking distance to downtown, a park with a great playground, and the lake. We also enjoyed outings to Farragut Park, Crystal Gold Mine and the Old Mission. The outside patio area worked great as an extra seating area for our family meals and just relaxing outside. The fenced yard was a nice size and worked great for our dogs, although the weeds were pretty tall. The home was clean and the kitchen was nice with newer appliances. The younger kids loved spending time in the basement with their own tv and the pool table. The only problem we had was wheelchair accessibility for grandpa who is confined to a wheelchair. Lauren was great at working with us so we could get more detailed information about wheelchair access in the home and plan ahead for his needs. The front door is not accessible by wheelchair due to the height of the steps, but we were able to get the wheelchair in the house using the back door with a small portable ramp we rented. The door to the main floor bathroom is less than 2 feet wide and does not allow any wheelchair access. We were able to make things work by renting a bedside commode and having grandpa wash using the kitchen sink. The hallway entrance to the main floor bedrooms was also very narrow (only about 25") and the wheelchair barely squeezed through. Before renting this home for wheelchair accessibility it is very important to make sure the wheelchair will squeeze through those narrow openings. Other than the accessibility issue, our group enjoyed the house and it worked well for us.
