Hood Canal House Rental Photos and Description

WELCOME to THE HISTORIC BALCH RETREAT on HOOD CANAL. A photographers playground providing history in nature's paradise, where the Olympics meet the crystal clear expansive waters of Hood Canal in Brinnon, Wa. Fronting over a 1,000 ft of wildlife and shell rich beach + many additional wonders located behind in Olympic National Park. Convenient and not to miss east side of Olympic Nat'l Park provides considerable travel time savings from most locations, so you can spend considerably less time in transit, and experiencing this amazing paradise!

INTRIGUING WILDLIFE OBSERVATION + CONTINUALLY EVOLVING VIEWS.... It doesn't get any better than the AWE inspiring and sweeping Hood Canal, and breathtaking Mt Rainier color changes at sunset and sunrise. Wildlife area directly in front provides your own version of Animal Planet. Resident harbor seal colony and pups, or the otter family that lives at the base of your beach stairs. Great fun to spot beaver and local Roosevelt Elk herd that drop by the beach, and yard. Numerous resident bald eagles fly directly out your window, and can be quite a thrill when flying just feet away (and you're not expecting it!).

BIRDING PARADISE, & WHALE TRAIL! Located on the Pacifc NW Whale Trail www.thewhaletrail.org/sites (click Hood Canal) + numerous fascinating bird varieties from large Herons to small hummingbirds, and everything in between. A true birding paradise with some gorgeous varieties, and birding books on site.

PROVIDED CANOE (with life preservers) takes you even closer to immersing with resident wildlife, or stroll the shell rich beach enjoyed by all ages. Venture on to acres of tidelands teeming with fascinating marine life at low tide. Great fun for adults and children.

PLEASE DECLARE ALL PERSONS (age of each) AND CANINES (age/breeds of each) WHEN CONTACTING. ALL PERSONS, INCLUDING VISITORS MUST BE REGISTERED GUESTS.

LOCATED ON THE WIDEST EXPANSE OF NORTH AMERICAS LONGEST FJORD, with the majestic Olympic Mountains meeting the crystal clear waters of the sea. A romantic and intimate favorite with singles, couples, and honeymooners + small groups. 4 private sleeping areas + 1 semi private loft (see Amenities section for bed info), with 2 ensuite bathrooms, and third bathroom in close proximity to bedrooms provides privacy (no need for window coverings), time savings, and convenience. One level living on main floor if desired, provides ease of movement for those with limited mobility (see below).

SUCCULENT HOOD CANAL SEAFOOD AND SHELLFISH for your fresh from the water feast. We know the best locations for oysters, clams, crab, shrimp, mussels, and geoduck from the crystal clear waters of Hood Canal. Please let us know what type of seafood interests you when inquiring.

THIS QUAINT NANTUCKET WATERFRONT CHARMER constructed by T.B. Balch in 1920, one of the original founders of Brinnon is rumored to be the closest to the water in all of Jefferson County. Great care has been taken to provide historically romantic ambiance. Stay at the only nationally registered, historic, waterfront holiday rental in close proximity to Seattle and Tacoma, and one of rare few in the Pacific NW.

BALCONY TIME - a guest favorite that offers a panoramic, built in, covered balcony with unobstructed day and night (moonlit water is a true sight to behold), rain or shine views. Relax and observe the wildlife in their natural setting, and expansive water/Mt Rainier views on the old fashioned rocking glider, or zero gravity recliners. Our year round hummingbirds that sometimes compete for the balcony feeder can sometimes be quite a show!

HIKING, MTN BIKING, and SPECTACULAR VIEWS IN WORLD RENOWNED OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK CLOSE BY. closest side of Olympic Natl Park/Forest to Seattle or Tacoma..1.5 hrs. Old growth forest with beautiful, glacially fed, cascading waterfalls that are tremendous fun to explore and view, in addition to amazing picturesque trails (camera is a must!). Panoramic, forever views of downtown Seattle, Mt Rainier, Mt. Baker, the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges + most of Puget Sound, all in close proximity by car, or hike in. Enjoyable and pet friendly Dosewallips State Park, with historic logging train trails is a close 3 min walk.

SUBMARINES AND MORE...Also unique to The Historic Balch Retreat is the interesting Trident Navy subs that practice next to the Estuary shelf in the middle of Hood Canal. One of few places in the world to view this unusual and interesting sight right from the interior or exterior of the home!

CENTRALLY LOCATED FOR BEST OF THE PACIFIC NW TOURING + SWIMMING, KAYAK RENTAL PACKAGES, BOATING, and FISHING in Hood Canal, or the numerous rivers (Dosewallips River is steps from your door where it meets Hood Canal). Just bring your poles. Kayak rentals can also be provided to your door + diving, and equipment rental nearby. Indulge in a relaxing massage on your deck next to the water (warmer months). Wine tasting, casinos, exceptional Olympic Mtn Ice Cream, and sampling at unique distilleries is also available. Visit quaint, historic seaports, with gorgeous Victorians. Great day trips for Twilight fans, Hurricane Ridge, Whale charters (in season), or ferry over to Victoria B.C. For out of state guests, centralized location allows for touring the very best of Western Washington. Pure relaxation is also a desirable option. There is something for everyone. The list is virtually endless......

ROMANCE ABOUNDS...Intimate and popular with couples and honeymooners. Indulge with a romantic toasty fire (cooler months), couples massage, hypnotic, sweeping, water and mtn views, 2 person, panoramic, moon lit (ck calendar) master suite jetted spa, complete with candles in the expansive master suite. Reconnect on the cushioned, wooden double rocking chair indoors , or yesteryear rocking glider on the view balcony (we love to rock!) that soothes, and relaxes. On site massage therapist is also available. Celebrate each other with so many appealing things to do together, or revel in total relaxation.

THE LITTLE EXTRAS... we are one of the few holiday rentals to offer RELIABLE, HIGH SPEED WIFI with focus on reliability and high speed (elusive in most Olympic Peninsula vacation rentals). Cleaning takes place the day of your arrival for a home that is warm, inviting, and low allergen. Wood starter package for a crackling fire (inside or out) and kitchen, dining, and bath products provided. We've tried to think of everything, including mobile massage therapist should you wish to indulge. High powered ZOOM binoculars that bring wildlife and Trident sub activity up close, and personal are provided, plus full equipment to harvest and prepare your fresh from the water feast, including rubber boots/waders, and fishing pole. So many amenities from beautiful stemware, numerous spices, to built in magnifying mirrors in bathrooms, and romantic atmosphere by candlelight. The large bonfire ring with built in split log seating near the moonlit waters edge are memories waiting to be made. Don't miss the plump, sweet blackberries on site mid to late summer.

TEA AFICIONADO?....You'll likely feel right at home with the tea pot, tea kettle, and many teas for sampling or exchanging, just waiting to help you discover that future favorite tea!

PREFER NOT TO COOK? Esquire magazines #2 choice for Best Bar in America is a close three minute walk at the Geoduck Restaurant, with WATERFRONT deck seating (warmer months). Additionally, The Half Way House Restaurant/Bakery (1 min drive) offers legendary pies/desserts, and homestyle cooking. Fabulous pizza, sandwiches, and salads, with indoor/outdoor waterfront seating now available at Pleasant Harbor Marina less than 2 minutes.

DIVING ANYONE? Discover octopus, wolf eels, starfish, crabs, shrimp, anemones, algae bloom, clams and numerous other sea creatures in one of the best diving locations in the Pacific Northwest. Diving gear rental nearby, or diving charter less than 2 minutes from your door at Pleasant Harbor Marina.

SENIORS AND THOSE WITH LIMITED MOBILITY have a mere 3 steps down from the parking area, and 1 step up to the country covered front porch, if staying on the well equipped main level in the charming blue room bedroom, with covered view balcony entrance. The main level provides large, open concept kitchen and dining, full bath with antique shower ring tub in close proximity to main floor bedroom, media room (serves as 4th bedroom), living room, and panoramic, covered, built in view balcony.

Step back to a simpler time, and experience a unique combination showcasing history, wildlife, Olympic National Park, Hood Canal, and the best of the Pacific NW in nature’s paradise.

About Tori and Wade

The Historic Balch Retreat on Hood Canal is our dream home where we will ultimately retire. We love sharing the home, wildlife beach, and Olympic National Park with friends and family, and want our guests to feel as if they are staying in a well-appointed, historic holiday home of a good friend. We hope you will experience the many wonders that we have.

Tori and Wade purchased this house in 2007

Why Tori and Wade chose Hood Canal

We chose this property after nearly a decade long search for a historic waterfront home, with placement near old growth forest where considerable wildlife abounds, preferably on Hood Canal near great restaurants. Our long wait was well rewarded. We hope you'll adore this photographer's playground as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The only authenticated, historic, waterfront holiday rental on Puget Sound fronting the crystal clear waters of Hood Canal on the widest expanse of the longest fjord in North America. Thrill to some of the most hypnotic and romantic moonlit views you may ever encounter. Evolving views ever changing include Mt Rainier + one of the rare places in the world with Trident subs to observe, with shell laden beach on a wildlife estuary.

Unplug and relax!

  • 5 of 5

Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it.

If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place.

From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details.

This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard.

To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera!

After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night.

A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience.

• Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away.

• This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California.

• Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please.

• While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time.

We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests.

In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations.

Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a 2 night stay (we were scheduled for 3rd night but an emergeny in the office required an early departure), well rested and relaxed. There were only two of us travelling with our two sr. citizen labs but the interior of the house is large enough that a larger group could spread out and not feel cramped. There is plenty of space outside as well in the side yard, on the large deck and the smaller covered deck. The weather kept us from venturing down the staircase to the beach right below, but that too could provide endless opportunities to explore or take the canoe out onto the water. Located centrally to allow for plenty of exploring in nearby towns, hiking to waterfalls, etc.

Loved the house, we will hope to visit again in warmer/sunnier weather so we can take full advantage of the deck and beach below. Communication with the owners before the trip and since our return has been great.

Excellent!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough good things about this rental as it was exceptionally clean, wonderful view, was able to watch eagles from the balcony along with the sea otters. Oysters were plentiful but could not eat because of red tide. But that would not stop us from returning for another visit. Evidently this is very rare but our luck would have it to be going on at our time. Thank you Tori for sharing your rental with us. The nearby waterfalls were an added bonus.

Relax in comfort

  • 5 of 5

Spent five beautiful October nights at the firepit after the most relaxing vacation days I can remember. Although there was much to see within both short and extended excursions, it was hard to leave the house to explore the rest of the Olympic Peninsula! Sunrise with fresh coffee on the veranda off the livingroom watching the wildlife react to the rising tide was addictive. Sunset found us back there for beautiful pastel skies. Cooked every meal either in the comfortable kitchen or on the deck grill. Everything was well maintained and worked as expected. Master bedroom and whirlpool bath were old-school luxurious and the opened skylights let you slip right back into the natural environment. Took the canoe out almost every day to explore the miles of intricate shoreline and get amazing opportunities for wildlife observation.

All around, one of the best vacation accommodations I've ever experienced.

Bravo Tori and Wade!

Lovely, peaceful setting!

  • 5 of 5

This "historic retreat" was just as advertised: a charming period piece that's immaculately maintained. We celebrated a family member's milestone birthday and had a great time. Watching the rhythm of the tides as it covered and uncovered the sandbars was one of our favorite pastimes; the bald eagles are nearly as plentiful as the seagulls.
