This property has been a popular scuba diving destination for over 20 years. It is within hours of Seattle and Portland Oregon. The hood canal is known world wide for its large pacific octopus, Wolf Eels, Crab, squid etc... The canal is unique that most diving is done by shore and the weather has never cancelled a dive. BEYOND the diving it is a great location at the foot of the Olympic mountains. The house is located north of Shelton but less than an hour from Olympia, Washington. You can choose to go hiking, kayaking, crabbing, fishing, golfing or relaxing at a local casino, all within an hours drive. It is the perfect place to get away, without having to drive for hours. You are able to change your mind or plans with little effort. Most everyone in your group can be accommodated. This house has grown from a divers paradise to a group getaway paradise.
The house was a farm house built sometime in the 1920's (?) so the locals say. Nobody knows for sure. The house still boasts its unique character - cedar walls, long front porch and a barn on site. The house is solid wood on the upper floors. When you first walk in you see the exposed cedar ceiling and wood floors. We have updated the property to modern conveniences, without losing the charm of the 1920's farm house. The windows are updated vinyl, but were built to replace the original wood windows with leaded glass. You get the charm of an old farm house by the water with modern day conveniences.
I love the Yellowhouse! I have spent literally dozens of weekends here - it is always incredible.
If you are in Hoodsport for a diving class (of any level) I couldnt recommend this place more. There is room for the entire group, there is a large gear locker and warming room (a must this time of year for the wetsuit divers!) The warming room is a particular favorite, it is both a warm place between dives and perfect for drying the gear. No cold wetsuit to put on. The house itself is well furnished and very nice, it feels very "homey" and has everything you need for the weekend. And also having your own private dive site for training makes everything far more convenient logistically speaking. There is also plenty of parking and the large rinse tanks make cleaning the gear at the end a breeze.
If you are fun diving with some friends it is also a great option! Like with the classes, you have everything to yourself. The dive site itself is good, there are navigational lines along the bottom making navigation a breeze. There are a lot of different sunken structures to attract life and the bottom is not sensitive. Actually have seen a few PGOs and wolf eels swimming around outside there. The house is also not far from incredible sites like Sund Rock and Octopus Hole.
All and all, whether you are there for fun or training - nowhere else in Hoodsport comes close to what you get from the Yellowhouse. Nothing but great things to say about the staff as well, ive taken classes through them, rented the house, bought gear, gotten gear serviced, and received literally hundreds of airfills. Ive never had a bad experience from any facet of the business and happily support them every chance I get.
Dive club enjoyed several days together for diving and social time.
Enjoyed the house with all the facilities needed and the separate 'Divers Inn' for all our diving needs.
It was a perfect house for our annual family reunion. Built in 1910, it has obviously been updated many times to provide a comfortable setting for groups. There were 10 of us and having 4 bathrooms was ideal! The kitchen did not have a dishwasher but had every pot, pan and dish we needed. All ten of us fit around the dining room table and that was very important for us. The house had all the comforts of home+ a fabulous hot tub that seats 10...well at least the 8 who wanted to participate. One of our best getaways ever. The contact person, Darnell, was very helpful and pleasant to work with.
My family did really enjoy this spot, as a comfortable, spacious place for a reunion of family from Alaska, Missouri, and Turkey gathered for a wedding in Union. Cooked hotdogs out over the fire, enjoyed the porches and plenty of space for folks to visit in smaller groups. The only glitch: We hadn't been informed on an entry code: was told via owner email that it "would be unlocked." Nephew arrived exhausted from Missouri, and couldn't get in! The Dive Shop was closed. After leaving messages/texts at 3 different places (we didn't have direct phone # for the owner), someone did finally call him with the code. VRBO/Homeaway made it very difficult to have direct contact with the owner--and the website was no help at all. I wouldn't do another VRBO without having owner/caretaker's direct phone number IN ADVANCE. The "good old days" of VRBO seem much less workable now that it's Expedia/HomeAway.
This was a great property, they have the house setup for a wonderful stay, they have everything you need and more.
Great location, right across from the water, has a great little private beach, we had kids with us and they had a great time.
For us the adults it was relaxing, fun, we loved the bbq area in the back as well as the jacuzzi!
We all wanted to move in !
Thank you for everything !
Every summer we hold a large Friendunion and always stay in a vacation rental. This place had everything we needed for our large group - a lot of parking, everyone had a bed (this is surprisingly difficult to find), multiple bathrooms, lots of towels... I could go on but those amenities are all listed. The house was big, had all kinds of stuff to make you feel at home, had a nicely stocked pantry from previous visitors, the hottub was very nice as well. Everything was maintained and clean and I got no complaints from my guests about the beds or really anything other than the traffic going by into town.
What really made this experience fabulous was the view of the Sound. The large front porch was great and our group played musical chairs with the super comfy outdoor rocking chairs. We saw seals bobbing around in the water. Some saw orca spouts. On the last couple of days we saw a river otter with a couple of pups playing on the dock. We picked enough blackberries (luckily before a deer visited them) from just the bushes around the parking area to make a blackberry crumble large enough to satisfy our large group.
The location is pretty much perfect for a quick maybe 5-minute walk into town for ice cream or to check out those cute little shops. The location was perfect for quick, and not so quick, day trips and berry hunting.
One more note I would like to mention. We left our large camera's tripod at the house and the owner took the time to mail it back to us with super fast shipping. Communication with the owner was always fast and quite pleasant. The entire experience was great!
Great place to relax and enjoy nature as you build community
with friends and family. Many water activities as well as hiking nearby and strolling through the shops, winery and distillery in town. Some of the best Scuba Diving locations in the Pacific Northwest including the Sund Rock Marine life preserve. A short drive south into Shelton you can explore a historic logging town filled with antique shops. Sample fresh local oysters and clams at Hamma Hamma and Taylor Shellfish.
For those who like to gamble there are 2 Casinos nearby.
