The property is stunning and located in the perfect location! Well kept and spacious

  • 5 of 5

The house is absolutely beautiful! it is close enough to the downtown area (roughly 7 min drive) to enjoy all the area has to offer, but far enough away to feel the serenity of the country. The property has beach access which really made our stay even more incredible! The house itself was extremely well kept, owners provided plenty of blankets, pillows, and towels for all parties. We had about 20 people in the house but due to its size and layout, you would never know! Owners were helpful and easy to work with. All our guests were truly blown away by the lovely property. We will surely be coming back! If i could give this house more than 5 stars, I surely would. Thanks for a vacation no one will soon forget!

Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed our property especially since you put hard work into planning the special weekend for your family & friends. We’re delighted you experienced several of the exceptional features, including remoteness while being only a few minutes away from downtown St.Joe (South Haven < 20 mins.) Like so many properties in SW Mich our beach was under extreme pressure this year due to high lake levels. Thankfully we avoided huge losses like our neighbors, many resorts, & even public beaches. As you surely noticed, for the first time we kept the extra-wide set of stairs above the sea wall & “out of harm’s way”. 3 sets of stairs constructed to the beach this year were destroyed! Fortunately we can rely on the massive boulders which guard thebluff (& are not subject to sudden destruction even by this lake) for beach access “in a pinch”.Weare hopeful the record high lake levels will normalize & we can reinstall the big stairs soon. As you also may have noticed, even under current harsh conditions our unique location allows guests to walk miles along an almost completely unoccupied private beach in both directions. The blessings nature bestows on our property - the natural majesty & extraordinary home (which as you mentioned somehow never seems crowded or cramped) inspires us to honor the features through personal actions. We plan to tastefully improve the area above the sea wall for those days when the lake is throwing 5-10 foot waves onto the beach below.Thank you for your positive comments on our efforts to furnish guests with sufficient bedding & supplies. We want guests to fully enjoy the property & commit to providing more than enough for all. It’s nice to have an extra pillow & blanket for everyone who wants one (even if there are 22 guests). We took a family ski trip to a similar property in tony Silverthorne Colorado & the owners provided only 8 plates, little silverware, & almost no pots & pans for our 20 person extended family! It tarnished an otherwise marvelous experience. We resolved to go over the top with incidentals (pitchers, plates, cutlery, pizza cutters etc.).Also, thank you for your comments regarding the work of our cleaning crew.We went thru several crews but feel the current crew helps this property shine despite the heavy demands placed upon it.Finally, thanks for leaving it in good condition. You guys deserve more than 5 stars too.We look forward to adding you to our growing list of returning guests.Keep enjoying life! The Arends

We enjoyed our stay at this wonderful home! House is very clean, kitchen well stocked with plenty of chairs and utensils for 12 adults. Backyard is beautiful with gorgeous views of Lake Michigan and plenty of chairs to enjoy bonfires at night. Would definitely stay again!!!

Owner's Response: Patti A: Thank you for your comments. We love our home and are happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for noticing the hard work of our cleaning crew. As owners of this one of a kind property we feel it is important for us to properly clean and furnish the home with furniture and incidentals so its unique charms are not tarnished by poor management. We are pleased your comments recognize one of the primary features of the property we have always appreciated; that is, the truly special back yard (and side yard) which we feel not only provide spectacular views of the lake but also respect the nature of the bluff. The bluff top peninsula fire ring is truly a magical place to “gather round the bonfire at night” and during the day the side yard provides plenty of space for games including space loving games like volleyball, bocce ball, or croquette. One subtle aspect of the backyard is its integration with the home and the consequent smooth flow into and out of the home. Many of our guests have told me personally that they share our special affinity for the sunroom. As you may have noticed, the room is almost all windows and it projects into the backyard; this layout provides a very natural vantage point to view and vicariously enjoy backyard/sideyard activities while at the same time allows the observer to enjoy the comforts of the indoors. We highly prize this aspect of the property because of its importance to one of our primary intended uses of the property for multigenerational gatherings. In short, it enhances the experience for those who are housebound or more comfortable indoors and allows them to share in the joy being experienced in the backyard. Finally, thank you for demonstrating your respect for our property by leaving it in such fine condition. Rest assured that you would be more than welcome by us, if you decide to act upon your comment you “would definitely stay again.” The Arends

House with space

  • 5 of 5

We used this house for a family reunion. There were 8 adults 5 children and 2 newborns. We have gathered to many houses throughout the years, but I felt this one gave us the most privacy along with great gathering areas. We loved the sun room and were gathered there all the time. The table in the kitchen could easily sit all 13 of us; consequently, we could dine together every evening. The kitchen is huge and well stocked. I wished I had taken time to really go through all of the cupboards and pantries because as the week went along I found more and more of the equipment that I had needed earlier. We appreciated having two refrigerators, and had plenty of room for storing all the food that we had bought.

A great lawn area for football, soccer, bocce ball, croquet, and any lawn game that you could think of. The hammocks were a great idea, but both had lost their tautness and if you ventured forth to use them, your rear would be sweeping the ground. Not as comfortable as other hammocks I've used in the past.

Besides the size of the house we chose this home because it was advertised as a "beach house". Well after you climbed down the 220 steps you were met by a rocky drop off straight into the water. The brave, who could maneuver over the rocks did find a bit of beach, but hardly conducive to what I imagined a beach house would be. But this said two points:

1. Lake Michigan, according to a newspaper article left in the kitchen is at an all time high

2. There were wonderful beaches 5-10 minute drive from this home.

So even without a beach at the house, we had our beach experiences.

This was a home where many wonderful memories, that we'll always treasure, were created.

Perfect getaway for our large extended family!

  • 5 of 5

This expansive house has a beautiful "park-like" setting on a bluff over-looking Lake Michigan! The home is very comfortable and has everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. We had 18 people in our family who appreciated how spacious the home was inside, while also having plenty of seating and outdoor space to gather as well. It was a real bonus having two full-size refrigerators and a wine fridge! There are plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy near the home along with great restaurants and pubs. We look forward to returning here again next year!

Great location for a family retreat.

  • 3 of 5

Our family that came from various locations and enjoyed St. Joseph for its beach and child friendly museum. The house was large enough to accommodate our family of 12 adults and 4 children. The upstairs has ample bedroom but only one bathroom that had to be shared by three families. There is a separate master bedroom with its own bathroom. Something to consider. The layout of the house is non traditional but functional. The two refrigerator were a definite pulse.

The house is located on the lake requiring driving to any location. To walk to the beach requires climbing considerable steps. OK for young adults and older children.

Upon arriving areas of the house required cleaning which the owners prompted completed ( they live off site) upon being notified. The caretaker was very helpful and power washed the grill that had been left dirty.

If one is looking for a large accommodation to house an entire family then is the only house in the area.

Owner's Response: Wow! Steven H. is a tough grader; 3 stars is not a fair representation of this property. This is a premium property and all guests are invited to visit before renting; see for yourself what it has to offer (guests often comment “the pictures don’t do the property justice” and we know it is true in our hearts). In response to Steven H., 3 families chose to share 1 upstairs bathroom when the 2nd upstairs bathroom was closer, and 2 first floor bathrooms were apparently used by only one family. The main house has 5 bathrooms and 7 bedrooms. Bathroom facilities include 3 showers (oversized with benches), 1 bath/shower combo and 1 oversized jetted tub. Steven also could have chosen to rent the Coach House with an additional ¾ bathroom. The house is over 6,000 sq. ft. and has a traditional layout, with room for guests to gather in the family room or out on the patio/lawn and eat together in the kitchen/dining area. The sprawling footprint also provides several areas which offer more private retreat for smaller groups. This home is located in a rural neighborhood. If you prefer the hubbub of downtown St. Joe (8 minutes by car) or South Haven (20 minutes by car), this is not the place for you. There are 220 steps to the 150 feet of private beach. The wooden staircase is unique, with 3 landings, a wood deck appx. 80 ft. above the lake and a picnic area above the beach on the seawall. We feel the property was adequately clean but changed the cleaning service in part due to his comments. This home is in a wooded, rural setting with a beach - there is wildlife (birds, bugs, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, deer etc.) and a stand of majestic black walnuts shading the patio and back yard (hammocks provided). If you want more humans around you and less wildlife this isn’t the property for you. Our caretaker Mike is absolutely the best! Like us, he genuinely wants you to enjoy the property. When Steven H. complained about cleanliness, Mike cleaned the grill and, because he’s a wonderful guy, Mike brought the family a basket of Michigan fruits and vegetables. This was much appreciated by us and was very well received by Steven and his family. We are quite proud of our property and want families to enjoy it. We are sorry Steven H. felt our property only deserved 3 out of 5 stars; however, we believe the bigger truth is as he says the only house in the area for such a large group and "a great location for a family retreat". We say come see for yourself!
