Originally built in 1890's as a restaurant that served the officers of the Presidio this unique Victorian cottage was converted to a house in the 30's. It is the lower unit of a two unit with a shared garden. In fact, some of the original rafters are still exposed. It has a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area with a library for your pleasure, a sitting room with foldout couch, arm chairs, a desk, and a TV. All the cabinetry is custom built by a master craftsman.
The bedroom has an antique four-poster bed, an art deco vanity, and plenty of closets, separated from the sitting area with curtains for privacy. The bathroom has the feeling of a hammam, tiled with Turkish tiles and looks out to the garden where you can also enjoy breakfast or tea. When you leave your private sanctuary, you will find yourself across the street from the Presidio (17,000 acres of park land) with lovely walking trails. Or walk down to Chestnut street for shopping and having a wonderful dinner.

Decorated with unusual objects from our travels all over the world. The decor is shabby chic that inspires a European apartment or a country cottage.
A flight of steps leads to this cozy hideaway and adjacent garden. The bed is very, very comfortable, the bathroom delicious, the shower blissful, and the whole apartment visually entertaining, decorated with books and objects from the owners’ collections. We made good use of the convenient laundry and kitchen facilities and nearby Marina Supermarket. The apartment is clean and as described in the listing. The owners are very hospitable and attentive to supply small items guests may want. We enjoyed exploring and sitting in the delightful secluded garden; there was a bench and table and chairs for our use. The location is excellent and the neighborhood safe and pleasant for walking. You can explore much of the north part of the city on foot. Several bus lines stop nearby or you can call for a taxi to more distant locations. Altogether it was quite nice to have a sense of coming 'home' at night instead of returning to an impersonal hotel room.
Everything about our stay at this property was no less fabulous than I expected! Alev and Robert met us and gave us some great tips about getting around, suggestions for local restaurants and we felt as if they were old friends soon after we met. I could have spent all day just examining the book collection, and enjoying the garden and I especially marveled at the unique decor and gorgeous antique furnishings of this old home. The location was only about a half block from a Muni bus stop which made it very convenient. We did not have a car for the three days we stayed and walked a lot in the nearby neighborhoods, to the grocery, etc. The wifi gave us perfect reception and my husband was happy with the tv! If we had to do it again, we would definitely choose this property. Perfect home base for a trip to the city.
What a lovely, clean, cozy apartment in a perfect location of San Francisco!! It is WAY bigger than the pictures portray it to be. The decor is so fun!!! I caught myself many times just sitting on the couch smiling - I was truly happy to be there!
We were within a 5 minute walk to Presidio and a 15 minute walk to East Beach!!
It was everything plus more we had hoped for!! We had a rental car because we traveled from LA; however, you definitely do not need to rent a car while staying here.
Alev was an absolute doll to do business with. There was always an immediate response via phone and/or e-mail. When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by Alev and her husband, Robert. They were so kind to help us with our luggage too! In the apartment, there's a very, very helpful binder full of great information for your stay... restaurant recommendations, things to do, things in the area, etc. It really helped us the one night when we felt like ordering out, we used one of the recommendations provided to us.
Although we were only there for 3 nights and did not see them during that duration, it was nice to know Alev and Robert were right upstairs. The night before we left, I e-mailed Alev to let her know the time we were leaving - she e-mailed me back in seconds and told us to ring her doorbell in the morning. I gave her a big hug and felt sad as we were leaving - I feel as if I knew Alev for such a long time.
She truly made our stay here absolutely memorable... This was truly an experience full of fun adventures that me and my husband will never forget!!!
Review #15082594 “One of a kind,Charming, Artistic,Romantic Getaway in most desirable neighborhood”
Pros; Good location in the Presidio neighborhood. It was close to the Marina and accessible from all parts of the Bay area. Property owners were welcoming and provided maps and info. The kitchen has everything you need to cook and prepare meals. The place has a good layout with some books and art pieces. Cons; The apartment is located in the basement of the home, so there is stale air and sewer gas smells. There is no garage or driveway, parking on the street was always a concern for us. Owners have the unit above and the noise from them walking on the wood floor/ceiling, woke you up at about 6 am. The apt.is in the basement, there is only one entrance/exit, (between tall buildings, down a stairway) my concern was, how do you get out in case of a fire/earthquake?
Also, the owners requested cash payment upon arrival, which we found to be a little inconvenient. A month or more after we rented, we still had not received our deposit back. We had to send an email to request it. Instead of giving us cash when we left, or sending a check, they paid us by Paypal. Fees were charged on both ends and we ended up paying both. After renting dozens of vacation places all over the world, we have never failed to get our full deposit back, until now. Not a good way to do business!
Fantastic location in the Presidio neighborhood! It was super close to the Marina and very accessible from all parts of the Bay area. Although there is no garage or driveway, parking was never an issue. The bed is extremely firm, so if you are someone who needs something plush, this is definitely not the bed for you, or else bring your own mattress topper. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook and prepare meals and such, with. Just bring your own groceries and you are set. The place has a great layout with some amazing books and art pieces and this is a very cute little French-inspired getaway. It is located in the basement of the home, so there is quite a bit of the typical San Francisco mildew and sewer gas smells - that was the only downfall is it smelling "old" and lots of uncirculated air. Otherwise this was fantastic! We came and went at our leisure, the location allowed us to get anywhere in 20 minutes and was a very nice and safe place to come back to. We really enjoyed our stay and the value, for what you got, was outstanding! Although we did not get the chance to meet Alev, she had a wonderful replacement caretaker and he was suberb and very polite and efficient. We recommend this place to travelers new to San Francisco as well as seasoned travellers who want the "home away from home" feel. Thank you so much for the wonderful stay - we didn't have a worry in the world!
Stayed in this lovely apartment with myself and 3 adult children. We enjoyed the city by walking, biking, uber and public transportation-no car rental needed. The charming apartment and beautiful garden provided a relaxing place to recover from adventures. We had everything we needed, Alev greeted us on arrival and made certain we were settled. The location couldn't be better with the Presidio, trails and shops steps away. I would definately stay here again
100% recommend this apartment!!! The apartment is steps to the beautiful Presidio, which features the lovely Palace of Fine Arts, beautiful views and access to the Golden Gate Bridge, gorgeous trails including the Costal Trail, and more. As if that isn't enough, being nestled in the desired Marina District of San Francisco keeps you far enough away from the high tourist areas to relax, but still close enough to still get out and enjoy them.
Robert and Alev are truly caring hosts, giving us maps and recommendations for what to see and explore throughout the city. My two sisters and I absolutely adored our stay in their apartment. It is very spacious, stocked with all the necessary amenities of home. The private access is so convenient, and the lush garden was one of our favorite places to relax and enjoy each others company. There is also a very handy corner store just at the end of the block, and plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby.
As our first visit to San Francisco, in just five days we biked along the Costal Trail and across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito, toured and 'escaped' Alcatraz Island, took a gorgeous sunset cruise with the Red and White Fleet, explored the historic Fisherman's Wharf, caught a comedy show in downtown, went to the top of the Coit Tower for some impeccable views of the entire city and bay, checked out the Treasure Island Flea and Craft market, rode the classic cable cars into downtown, went to 'Off the Grid' food truck party, and enjoyed plenty of other local restaurants and shops! If we didn't have such a wonderful place to stay and call our home for five days, I know our trip would not have been as wonderful as it was. *BTW, we did all of this without ever renting a car. Walking/biking, uber, and city transit was all we needed.
This property is truly a gem, and I will recommend it to anyone looking to spend some time in San Francisco. All three of us said we would be back to stay with Robert and Alev in separate trips with our husbands, and we mean it!
One of the most attractive areas of San Francisco is by far Cow Hollow and Marina. This romantic apartment is across from the Presidio and George Lucas Park (where Star Wars films are made).
Five minute walk through the spectacular parks will take you to the beach through the Palace of Fine Arts with its lovely pond full of swans and other aquatic birds and a historical Maybeck palace edifice, then to Crissy Field recreation area with its wildlife and sports facilities. You can take a walk along the beach to the Golden Gate Bridge and one of the best surfing areas. Or visit Fort Point and its historically interesting museum with the unequaled panoramic views of SF and the Bay. Then, walk or bicycle on the Golden Gate bridge to Marin County.
The apartment sits In between Chestnut and Union, the great shopping streets, filled with charming restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, trendy boutiques, beauty salons, markets, and ATMs.
Several bus lines within a block will transport you to just about anywhere in the city. You will have an unforgettable experience of San Francisco in this perfect location. If you like outdoors, the Presidio is full of natural trails, some with Andy Goldsworthy sculptures, that will make you feel as if you are in the country.
