Originally built in 1890's as a restaurant that served the officers of the Presidio this unique Victorian cottage was converted to a house in the 30's. It is the lower unit of a two unit with a garden. In fact, some of the original rafters are still exposed. It has a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area with a library for your pleasure, a sitting room with foldout couch, arm chairs, a desk, and a TV. All the cabinetry is custom built by a master craftsman.

The bedroom has an antique four-poster bed, an art deco vanity, and plenty of closets, separated from the sitting area with curtains for privacy. The bathroom has the feeling of a hammam, tiled with Turkish tiles and looks out to the garden where you can also enjoy breakfast or tea. When you leave your private sanctuary, you will find yourself across the street from the Presidio (17,000 acres of park land) with lovely walking trails. Or walk down to Chestnut street for shopping and having a wonderful dinner.

TV,VCR, DVD player.

Free Wi-fi fast internet access.

Highlights: Fabulous walking area, steps from the Presidio park, Palace of Fine Arts, Crissy Field Beach and recreation area. The Exploratorium is right around the corner.Lots of bus lines, restaurants, cafes, shops, ATMs, movie theaters, quiet neighborhood, walking distance to the Golden Gate Bridge. Lyon St steps, leading to some of the most beautiful mansions in San Francisco, is a five minute walk.

Aesthetics: It's ideal for a couple or a single person from out of town to explore all the wonders of SF. Perfect for a romantic getaway. In fact, we've had couples who got engaged here... Great place for writers, artists, and people involved in many other creative endeavors. You feel like you are in an enchanted cottage, full of wonder and mystery.

Decorated with unusual objects from our travels all over the world. The decor is shabby chic that inspires a European apartment or a country cottage.

Guestbook comments from the manager

A flight of steps leads to this cozy hideaway and adjacent garden. The bed is very, very comfortable, the bathroom delicious, the shower blissful, and the whole apartment visually entertaining, decorated with books and objects from the owners’ collections. We made good use of the convenient laundry and kitchen facilities and nearby Marina Supermarket. The apartment is clean and as described in the listing. The owners are very hospitable and attentive to supply small items guests may want. We enjoyed exploring and sitting in the delightful secluded garden; there was a bench and table and chairs for our use. The location is excellent and the neighborhood safe and pleasant for walking. You can explore much of the north part of the city on foot. Several bus lines stop nearby or you can call for a taxi to more distant locations. Altogether it was quite nice to have a sense of coming 'home' at night instead of returning to an impersonal hotel room.

Charming, homey, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

What a gem! A lovely and comfortable apartment with private garden in back. Exploring the wide-ranging collection of books filling the shelves made for some delightful down time. Beautiful hikes/walks, nice shops and restaurants, all close by. Hard to imagine we will ever stay elsewhere when visiting the city.

Outstanding Location, Excellent Value

  • 4 of 5

Usually avoid "charming," but this larger off the radar larger basement studio reflected owners artistic personality, was spacious, clean, and functional for a couple. Ease of private entrance walk down access from a nice neighborhood street, had small verdant, pleasant, closed in backyard patio sitting area, a corner market just feet away for essentials. It's the perfect location for access to Chestnut St. shops, restaurants, groceries, retail, and a main bus stop. The Presidio, Marina district are right around the corner, or if you care to hike up Lombard steps up to Pac- Heights to high rent areas. Has very limited sunlight, could use some additional ceiling insulation with owners walking above, only if you plan to spend days there or are very light early sleeper. We're very frequent 4 star SF visitors, have rented more elegant, updated (smaller) Pac-Heights garage/basement units -for much more. But, this low key venue is perfect high value spot with personality and homelike feel for navigating the city. Owners were kind, responsive and helpful. We'll stay again! Thanks Alev & Robert!

Fabulous location, Quaint cottage, Charming hosts!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely experience we had in what we called our "little, hidden sanctuary." The location is ideal for a visit to the city. It is right next to the Presidio and near top rated restaurants and shopping in the Marina District. We were able to walk to many of our destinations, but public transportation is just steps away, so we invested in a 3 day Muni passport and traveled all over the city with relative ease.

The cottage itself is welcoming and comfortable. We did not spend much time there because we were out adventuring, but it was so nice to come back to the eclectic decor and extensive library of the comfy home. The back garden is an enchanting place that my daughter describes as "a quiet little paradise."

I was initially concerned that the bed might be too firm because I like softer mattresses, but my husband and I both agreed that we slept better than we had in ages and woke up refreshed each morning ready for a cup of French press coffee. I also considered it an added bonus that we were staying in an historic building that was part of the Presidio's history.

Alev and Robert were amazing hosts. They immediately made us feel welcome and provided us with ample information and helpful recommendations. It was nice to know that they were just a phone call away if we needed anything. My only regret is that we didn't have more time just to visit with this delightful couple.

Cozy Place

  • 5 of 5

This was a very nice place to stay. Very cozy and comfortable. It's located extremely close to multiple bus stops. No car was necessary. There's a small market close by. Within walking distance of a lot of things.

Some have commented on hearing walking around from above. Alev let me know when they were having company and said to let them know if it was too loud. It was never too loud.

I received my deposit back with days of leaving.

My only complaint was the stairs are dark if you get back late. They're steep too so it's something to keep in mind with heavy luggage.

Perfect location for an anniversary celebration!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful surprise to find such a gem of a house and its gardens located in the midst of the city! Surrounded by condos and apartments, this hidden rental is located within walking distance of the Presidio, and for those who like longer hikes, the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf are easily accessible. The delightful owners have gone to great depths to provide a place where you can relax in comfort and feel right at home!

First visit to San Francisco

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay at this property was no less fabulous than I expected! Alev and Robert met us and gave us some great tips about getting around, suggestions for local restaurants and we felt as if they were old friends soon after we met. I could have spent all day just examining the book collection, and enjoying the garden and I especially marveled at the unique decor and gorgeous antique furnishings of this old home. The location was only about a half block from a Muni bus stop which made it very convenient. We did not have a car for the three days we stayed and walked a lot in the nearby neighborhoods, to the grocery, etc. The wifi gave us perfect reception and my husband was happy with the tv! If we had to do it again, we would definitely choose this property. Perfect home base for a trip to the city.

Nearest Restaurant
100 Metres
Many, many: A16, Presidio Social Club, Rose's Cafe
Car: not necessary

One of the most attractive areas of San Francisco is by far Cow Hollow and Marina. This romantic apartment is across from the Presidio and George Lucas Park (where Star Wars films are made).

Five minute walk through the spectacular parks will take you to the beach through the Palace of Fine Arts with its lovely pond full of swans and other aquatic birds and a historical Maybeck palace edifice, then to Crissy Field recreation area with its wildlife and sports facilities. You can take a walk along the beach to the Golden Gate Bridge and one of the best surfing areas. Or visit Fort Point and its historically interesting museum with the unequaled panoramic views of SF and the Bay. Then, walk or bicycle on the Golden Gate bridge to Marin County.

The apartment sits In between Chestnut and Union, the great shopping streets, filled with charming restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, trendy boutiques, beauty salons, markets, and ATMs.

Several bus lines within a block will transport you to just about anywhere in the city. You will have an unforgettable experience of San Francisco in this perfect location. If you like outdoors, the Presidio is full of natural trails, some with Andy Goldsworthy sculptures, that will make you feel as if you are in the country.
