This place is so much more beautiful and peaceful than pictures could ever do it justice. It was the perfect getaway for my husband and I who were visiting family in Seattle and wanted a couple days away together to explore Olympic National Park for my birthday. The house itself has everything you could need and feels so cozy and peaceful. The views right from your livingroom or front door are out of this world -- it made it hard to want to leave. Mikey the dog was an old gentle soul who became our pal while we were there -- he mostly kept to the main house but we would call for him whenever we saw him and he was happy to hang out with us so we could smother him with hugs. We loved coming home after hiking all day to enjoy a fire outside and gaze up at the stars.
Location-wise, this house is perfect for exploring the park, while being just up a winding mountain road from the main town of Port Angeles with everything you could need in terms of restaurants, groceries, etc. We got in later on Sunday so went into town to get some drinks and dinner at NextDoor pub and they had live music that was perfect. We were able to wake up early the next day and drive just a couple hours over to see Ruby Beach at low tide, the Ho Rain Forest trails including the Hall of Mosses, and finish off the day with dinner and drinks at Crescent Lake Lodge. It was the perfect itinerary and we still got home early enough to hang out at the house by the fire. Our final morning we drove up to do the Hurricane Ridge Trail, which is really close to the house (the views look right at it) and it was the most breathtaking hike of our lives. For those who feel like sticking close to home, it sounds like there are also some amazing hikes right on the property that we didn't have time to check out.
Everyone was friendly and helpful and we really loved staying here -- it was nourishing to the soul. Would highly recommend it to either a family or a couple looking for a romantic and peaceful getaway. Hope we can come back someday!
We are a family of five with three boys, so this listing was ideal for us. We had planned to do some hiking and leisurely sight seeing, so the location was perfect to enjoy the solitude of nature yet be conveniently located to activities. The amenities were as advertised and the property was well maintained and comfortable. We felt like we were at our own private little ranch as Sarah Lee, the owner was kind and welcoming and even offered up bicycles for the boys to ride. The living accommodations are part of a barn structure and as such, the horses that reside on the property are right out the door. Part of the time, the main gate to the property was closed and the horse were out and about. I love horses and the two that were roaming were tolerant and approachable gentle souls.
One of our plans was an excursion to Hurricane Ridge, and as it is visible from the property and socked in with clouds during our stay, we never bothered going and opted for Cape Flattery which was an easy two hour drive and beautiful I might add. (There are also web cams at Hurricane Ridge if you want to check). We also day tripped to Port Townsend, which is a bit more "touristy" than Port Angeles.
The evenings, we spent at the property enjoying the horses and the friendly dog, Mike. There was a fire pit we got going in the evening and enjoyed poking the logs while the two younger boys had room to run around in the fenced open field on the property. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The only negative is a slight sulfur odor in the well water that becomes more pronounced with heating. It was ok for a quick sip, but not amiable for hot tea or coffee. I suspect the locals might have accommodated to it. Bring some bottled water if your picky. Despite this, I would definitely stay here again!!!!
Based on the pictures, my husband and our boys (11 and 15) were already excited about Sara Lee's bunkhouse, but it was even better than expected. Sara Lee greeted us and showed us around as well as answered our questions about the area and gave us tips on good hiking spots around her property as well as nearby hurricane ridge.
The views from her property were amazing, even when it was cloudy. The horses were beautiful grazing around the property; my 11 year old was ecstatic about being able to pet them and feed them. Mikey the dog was also adorably sweet.
The beds were comfortable, and the kitchen had all the tools we needed to cook. We got some delicious salmon and lobster tails from the Safeway in town.
Adventures we had while in the area included a day trip over to Victoria, BC on the ferry, driving up to Hurricane Ridge and hiking around on Switchback Trail, and hiking up to Sol Doc Falls.
We stayed two nights at the bunkhouse on Sara Lee's property. It was a great launch spot for exploring Olympic National Park, and it was also a perfect place to cozy up with a book and a beautiful view of the mountains. Two horses grazed back and forth across a pasture in front of us, and the dog Mikey greeted us exuberantly whenever we stepped outside the door. Everything about this place was welcoming.
Sara Lee (owner) was very nice and helpful in coordinating with me before and during our stay. It is convenient that she also lives on the property - her house is a 3 min walk away from the cottage, so it provided enough privacy as well. We were a party of 5, and there were just enough beds for us. The cottage is not large, but worked comfortably and cozy for us. The kitchen was fairly well equipped, but bring your own cooking utensils and knives if you enjoy cooking during your trip. The property is about 45 min drive from the Olympic National Park so it's great for all sorts of outdoor activities - hiking, kayaking/canoeing or other water sports at Lake Crescent and the surrounding area. It's also fairly close (~1 hour drive) to the Sol Duc hot springs - great after a long day of hiking.
The cottage is on a vast property with a couple of horses, with gorgeous mountains in the backdrop.
Very nice stay overall, would definitely recommend to small groups under 5 people.
We had a wonderful time at this please, the owner was so caring, made us feel at home. Morning opened up in Mountains and clouds. This place was amazing and full of life. Home was well decorated with fresh flowers and full of light. I loved this place and would like to re-visit. We went to Hurricane Ridge and we amazed to spot out this place where we lived. The crystal mountain and crystal lake make you wonder how good the nature is and make you forget everything in the world. We plan to visit again.
