Fantastic accommodations in Kyoto Gion area. We were a party of 5, my husband and I, 2 kids (12, 13), and my mother. My mother stayed on the main floor, and we had the upstairs for sleeping (the stairs are a bit steep). The kitchen space was adequate for preparing a quick breakfast, but you wouldn't want to have to cook anything more than eggs and toast because the kitchen space is small. However, we were not in Kyoto to stay in, so not a problem for us at all! The neighbourhood is interesting and walk-able, so close to the subways and buses. Getting a taxi was easy on the main street (Shijo-dori) just a short 2 blocks away. Our host was easily accessible by email - our preferred means of communication. She answered all questions promptly and gave us very helpful suggestions when I asked about where to buy certain things. The bath was heavenly, so relaxing after busy days of sightseeing! We would certainly stay again, if the opportunity ever arises for us again!
I just want to thank the staff at Kyounokatadomari Kyomachiya for a great stay, especially Yumi. For those unfamiliar with hospitality in Japan, omotenashi is a word use in Japan to describe selfless hospitality. The art of providing a level of customer service that humbly impresses, and Yumi really brought that to our stay, even making a personal visit to our machiya to make sure that we were comfortable and helping us with our luggage. If anything came up during our stay, like needing something around the machiya, she took care of it right away. She was easily accessible via email and responded quickly.
This was our first time using this machiya management group for our lodging. Three years ago, I had stayed with a another group, but as I was booking for a much longer stay with less time before the trip, I had to find help from another group. Fortunately, I found Kyounokatadomari Kyomachiya. The two machiya we stayed in, Ayame-an and Kogame-an, were very well equipped and provided easy access to subway stations, convenience stores, and local attractions.
I will definitely stay with Kyounokatadomari Kyomachiya again on my next visit to Kyoto, and I would recommend them to any friend or family going to Japan.
