Claremont House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Welcome to North Star House and the Connecticut River Scenic Byway. Located on 700 acres in Cornish and Claremont New Hampshire, North Star House is the result of our year-long top-to-bottom restoration of this 1855 historic home. We’ve retained all of the historic features – slate roof, antique hardware, wavy glass windows, hand-carved millwork – while providing modern comforts, including a gourmet kitchen, two new full baths and a Jotul glass-fronted woodstove.

The house includes the traditional farmhouse first-floor front and rear parlors, with the rear parlor featuring a large south-facing bay window and wood stove. The front parlor includes a pull-out couch that can sleep two. Also on the first floor are the dining room with French door access to a south-facing patio, the large, sunny, eat-in kitchen, a screened porch with views of the Connecticut River and Mount Ascutney, a full bath, an indoor storage area for skis and kayaks and a two-car garage. Upstairs, North Star House features a master bedroom with views of the fields and the Connecticut River, three smaller bedrooms and two additional full baths. The house complies with modern energy codes, being fully insulated to keep the place warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

North Star House’s kitchen features fine custom cabinetry made in Vermont with counters of soapstone. There’s plenty of space for preparing exquisite meals, including a large central island with custom-made soapstone prep sink. Appliances include a “French door” stainless steel refrigerator, 36” gas stove with griddle and extra large oven, dishwasher, microwave, Cuisinart food processor, coffee maker and toaster oven. The kitchen is well stocked with copper, stainless and cast-iron cookware, dishes, glassware (including an extensive collection of wine and cocktail glasses), flatware and kitchen tools. Radiant floor heat warms the custom oak-strip floor. An oak kitchen table that seats 4 to 6 is perfect for eat-in meals or when the kids need a break from the dining room guests.

The front and rear parlors at North Star House include restored birch flooring, historic mouldings and restored wavy glass windows from the 1800s. A large woodstove keeps the two rooms cozy on a cold winter’s day or a chilly morning in the spring or fall. The front parlor includes an entertainment center with 32” Sony flat-screen TV with cable, DVD player (with our eclectic library of DVDs), 300 CD changer, turntable, audio unit (with iPod connection) and speakers. With our line of sight to Mount Ascutney, there’s great cell phone coverage, including 3G broadband modem service. Hgh-speed internet via cable is included with wireless access throughout the house.

North Star House is located on NH Route 12A (the Connecticut River Scenic Byway) in the historic Cornish Colony area. Nestled among working farms, the river and hundreds of acres of forest, the property offers almost unlimited recreational opportunities. With more than a quarter mile of private river frontage, North Star House provides direct access to fishing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Great River Outfitters in nearby Windsor, Vermont, can outfit you with canoes, kayaks and tubes for half- and full-day river excursions.

The home is furnished with everything you need for an enjoyable stay in our area, including towels, linens, a collection of movies and a well-equipped kitchen. During the spring, summer and fall, enjoy our many acres of landscaped gardens, lawn and fields. A delicious crop of blueberries awaits you during late July and early August, as do early fall apples and pears. Neighboring farmstands and farmers’ markets provide locally grown corn, tomatoes as well as countless other fruit and vegetables, locally made cheeses, chickens, and more!

North Star House’s 700 acres include a vast network of trails for casual strolls, cross-country skiing, serious hikes and mountain biking – both single track and double track. Connecting trails to the Cornish Town Forest are available for seriously technical biking, as well as hiking access to some great views of Mount Ascutney and the Vermont countryside. For a daytime (or nighttime) get-away, check out our restored sugar house with its woodstove and rustic collection of maple sugaring gear.

For weddings, North Star House offers a large flat lawn that is perfect for a large reception tent with views of the mountains, forests and river. Fields across the way provide virtually unlimited parking for your major event. We can provide contacts for local caterers, tent suppliers, musicians and even officiators! The restored 1820s Trinity Church, located just up Route 12A in Cornish, is a beautiful location for a traditional wedding ceremony.

Luxurious renovated farmhouse with gorgeous views!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week with three children aged 10, 13 &15 and a dog and we all had a wonderful time. The house has been renovated with enormous care and attention to detail. The house is very stylish and extremely comfortable, down to the lovely sheets on the beds. There is a very well stocked games closet should the weather stop you from going outside but if the sun is shining, the place to be is down by the river (just a couple of minutes away). It is so beautiful and the perfect place for a tranquil afternoon. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with everything you could possibly need. It is also gorgeous. I felt sad to return to my sad old kitchen at the end of the vacation!!! The screened porch is ideal for evenings and the fire pit meant we could enjoy s'mores while star gazing. Truly the perfect house!

Heaven

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home! It was perfect from the moment we entered. Bill + Jenny were kind enough to leave us the fixings for breakfast the next morning, which was the start to our delightful stay. The home is not only beautiful, but also immaculate. Every conceivable item you could need is there, the kitchen is great to cook in. The location couldn't be better for all the hiking and sightseeing we did. Our Australian Shepherd did not want to leave (neither did we), he enjoyed our morning walks around the property. We are already planning our trip back next year, and will stay for a longer period. Thanks Bill + Jenny for sharing your home with us. We had a great time, and made many wonderful memories. To be continued next year!!

Stunning house on amazing piece of land!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with two other couples for my husband's 30th birthday. The house itself was gorgeous and I thoroughly enjoyed cooking up a storm in the amazing kitchen. We spent a lot of time exploring the trails around the house and loved visiting the old sugar house. The owners were very sweet and left ingredients to make blueberry scones for us in the fridge. Such a nice touch! Enjoy your stay!

New Year's Trip

  • 5 of 5

We chose the North Star House for our annual New Year's snow shoeing trip, and were glad we did! Four of us shared the house, which was toasty warm in late December/early January. It was so warm, in fact, that we never used the wood stove. The renovation respects the historic farm house, making the interior interesting (steep stairs and smaller parlors) while updating the kitchen and baths. The kitchen was well stocked with plates, cutlery, and serving dishes -- all you need is the food! Everything was very clean, with plenty of supplies on site. The location is great for hiking or snow shoeing on the private trails across the street. We didn't find the street traffic bothersome and we came to miss the train when it didn't keep to schedule! Bedrooms are on the second floor -- the master bedroom is magnificently large, with an attached bathroom. Three full baths (one on the first floor) are very handy -- even for four people! All-in-all, a fun way to experience an old house (with all the hard work of renovation and updating done)!

Exceptional Property

  • 5 of 5

We booked a family get-together over Thanksgiving week for four families including two young children. The house could not have been more perfect for our Thanksgiving vacation. The entire home greatly exceeded our expectations. The rooms are very large and the whole house is much bigger than it appears from the outside. Everything in the home has been beautifully updated- the kitchen and baths are real stand-outs. The 700 acre property has hiking trails that were perfect for every member of our party. We have booked 10-15 different homes through VRBO from Maine to North Carolina for different family vacations and I have to say that I highly recommend this property.

Amazing week at an amazing house!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here from 9/29-10/6 with several friends from out of town and held our wedding reception here on the Saturday of our stay. The house is gorgeous and the care Bill and Jenny took in renovating and restoring it really show. It's deceptively big, and very open downstairs with the double living rooms/parlors, but there is plenty of space for privacy - we even had a 2 year old and her sick mom staying in the room above the garage and they didn't hear a peep from everyone up late in the parlors. The expandable dining room table was perfect for big house dinners, board games, and our small morning after brunch - I think we ended up comfortably seating ~15 people at any given time. The kitchen is better than any kitchen I've ever been in and a dream. For storage, there is plenty of space in the garage and attached entryway, and the garage was the perfect spot for our DIY flower prep.

The grounds are equally impressive - huge open fields, apple trees and berry bushes, fishing from huge slate rocks leading into the river, and awesome scenery with Mt. Ascutney right across the river. Wedding pictures beside the red barn and in front of the old gray shed were perfect, hay bales and pumpkins made our decorations all the more authentic, and the upper lawn was the PERFECT spot for our 30x60 wedding tent. Parking across the street and electricity to the tent were not problems thanks to Bill's efforts.

I can't say enough good about this house and would highly recommend it to anyone interested. We will 100% be returning at some point, and can't wait to do so!
