I have worked in Hollywood designing DVD and BD special packaging for years. Some of the films I worked on include: Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman, Harry Potter and the Hobbit to name a few. I have been a designer all my life and my husband and I built this home as a living art project. Our goal was to make it elegant yet comfortable. We hope you enjoy our Treasure House.
Paula Doherty purchased this villa in 2007
We saw the lot and fell in love with the view, air quality and array of birds. There is always a gentle breeze so it never gets too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.
Magnificent views, Flowers and birds everywhere. An eagle actually came and sat
beside me when I was on my outdoir sala. Incredible, large pool with lion head fountains.
Shamans, art, antiques and good vibes. Our staff
Is full of love and generosity.
Casa Tesoro is a beautiful and luxurious home at the top of the extension of La Quinta. As we were all for exercise we were happy to hike up steep cobble stone slopes each day to get to town and back. However, a taxi ride is very affordable (US$2). San Miguel was crowded this year compared to our previous visit, as the world has finally recognized it as an ideal location for entertainment, shopping, culture and archaeology. The home was perfect for the 6 of us, spacious with adequate privacy. It has a decent sized pool which we used regularly. As it was winter we needed to pay an extra fee to heat the pool, which worked out very well. The home has a well equipped kitchen, which the housekeeper maintains in tip top shape and she was always happy to make us breakfast, guacamole and margaritas! She is a very polite and amicable person that did the laundry regularly and kept the bedrooms and bathrooms tidy and clean. We took cooking classes at Hotel Sierra Nevada, which I highly recommend and if you enjoy food, San Migel has many excellent restaurants. If you enjoy shopping for food you can avail yourself of the many markets and use Casa Tesoro's kitchen to whip up some Pollo Verde of Pollo Pozole! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Tesoro.
I cannot begin to describe how beautiful this home is nor how enchanting San Miguel de Allende and the people are. We were truly lucky to have found Paula's incredible home. We rented the home with another couple and were in San Miguel to celebrate a friend's 50th, luck has it the home our friends were staying at was about 1/2 mile from this home. The home is absolutely gorgeous Paula has spared no attention to detail. Everywhere you look there is something unique in beautiful, during the week we were there we uncovered so many details. The home itself is warm and welcoming, the bedrooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. The grounds are immaculate the home itself is very clean and well maintained. The housekeeper Elvia is very accommodating as is the groundskeeper Arcario. Both are warm, friendly and welcoming people. Elvia makes a killer guacamole, she did cook a couple of breakfasts for us but we spent much of our time at the home were our other friends were staying at. She will go shop for you and cook meals if you so desire, she was a wealth of information as well. The location of the house is perfect a short walk to the main square, we walked at night as well and felt safe. The house does sit atop a steep hill so if you do have issues we recommend a cab Elvia gave us 2 that we had on speed dial but for the most part we loved the exercise. Our friends were staying at Casa Heyne, which is much bigger than this home but believe me this home is just as beautiful plus it has a swimming pool. Paula is an incredible host and super interesting, I had the pleasure of talking to her on the phone several times and hope to meet her sometime when I get back to LA. We were lucky enough to have been in San Miguel during Dia de los Muertos what a beautiful experience. We ventured out to Cañada de la Virgen, Mayan ruins about an hour from San Miguel very cool our friend had a rental car so we went to Dolores Hidalgo and to the ruins on our own super easy. If you get a chance go to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco and eat at Nirvana. There is a Peruvian restaurant called La Parada not far from the house you must eat there as well. So many places so little time!! If you are planning a trip to this beautiful City and are looking for a place to stay look no further, this home has everything you need and more. Oh did I mention eating breakfast on the outside dinning area with the fireplace on and the view of the town.....incredible.
We rented this gorgeous home for 10 days in late July/early August 2016. As many of the other guests have already said, it is much better and more beautiful than the photos depict. It is packed full of beautiful art and rugs and the hand rails on the stairs are shaped like serpents and made of what appears to be bronze. That is just one of the many, many details that make it better than any art gallery in the area.
The rooms are very spacious, all with their own bathrooms, and there are patios and fireplaces everywhere.
It's located on top of a hill above downtown San Miguel and the surrounding homes are all multi-million dollar homes, as this one must be. Just think Mount Soledad in La Jolla and you'll have the picture.
It's a short walk to town, but we took a cab, as it is a steep walk on cobblestones. The cabs cost all of about $2 to $3 dollars--like almost free. The beds and linens are of the utmost quality and the pool area is gorgeous. I didn't swim ( my favorite type of exercise as I have aged) because the pool was a bit cold for me, but I later read for a price they'll heat it for your visit. I think that's what I'll do next time.
Oh yes, assuming Paula the owner let's us return, we will definitely be back. I own 6 luxury VRBO rentals in Colorado, and have been using VRBO all over the world, and as my husband said..."This is by far the best place we have ever rented".
Even better than the home--which you can probably tell I loved, was the housekeeper/cook. Her name is Elvie and she kept the place immaculate. She also cooked breakfast and lunch for us, and while we tried 9 different highly recommended restaurants in town, no one had food as good as Elvie's. I would note for your convenience that you bring a blow dryer. They did not provide one or shampoo or bathrobes. Personally I just went to the Rosewood spa daily for a massage and fixed my hair there. This is a very minor point, but I figured if you knew ahead of time, you could bring one with you.
Thank you Elvie and Paula. What a great trip we had, and in great part it was due to your lovely home and service and attention to detail. BTW--we loved the town of San Miguel.Travel and Leisure got it right when they rated it the most beautiful town in Latin America. It felt safe and adorable; great shops and restaurants, and amenities you'd find in a city, but in a charming old, cobblestone town. What a find!!!
We can only echo what has already been said about this exquisite property. Its truly magnificent and it was difficult to leave at the end of our stay. The attention to detail that went into creating this residence is extraordinary. Each room, passageway, terrace, and niche has been designed to welcome you, titillate your aesthetic palate, and comfort you.
The furnishing, art, antiques and landscaping only enrich the gorgeously designed skeleton of the house and grounds. The snake motif seen on the relief at the entrance to the house and repeated on benches and the incredible handrails on the stairs, serve as an homage to Mexico and its mythology. Add the Pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art , Moorish and religious artifacts and one feels as though you're spending the night in a palace.
Its grand but also charming, very comfortable and welcoming. The outdoor living spaces naturally blend in with the interiors - you will want to live and take advantage of every square foot of the property. The sunsets from the terraces are especially spectacular.
And if the comfort and the beauty of the accommodations weren't enough, the service provided by the owner Paula and her staff placed our stay into the realm of magical realism! Paula graciously and enthusiastically made herself available in the weeks prior to our visit helping with the logistics of our trip, suggesting thing to see in the area, places to eat and creating a menu for Elvia, the housekeeper and cook tailored to our dietary needs. Elvia kept the property immaculate and created the most delicious, fresh, tasty breakfasts and lunches. She was also a wealth of information about San Miguel de Allende and its environs. Our family of five enjoyed our stay immensely and we would return to the property and San Miguel de Allende in a heartbeat!
The photos of this property are lovely, and they don't come close to showing how beautiful the house and the grounds are. Everywhere you turn, you want to stop and take it all in. We spent happy hours on the patios and sitting areas.
Throughout our stay, the housekeeper/cook Elvia kept the place immaculate. She cooked wonderful meals, she provided good advice about touring, and she was unfailingly cheerful. Her English wasn't very good, and our Spanish was awful, but with translation software on our smart phones we did just fine.
The views are spectacular, but that is because the house sits on a steep hill. Like everywhere else in San Miguel de Allende, the street is cobblestone. We live at 5,000-foot altitude, but SMdA is another 1,500 feet higher. On that hill, the altitude made a difference as we walked back and forth to town.
This is a quibble. The cab cost 30 pesos (about $2), and we could have taken it every time. The fact that the youngest in our five-person party was 44 and the oldest was 70 and we all tackled that hill every day for five days should tell you it wasn't that big a deal. If you have trouble breathing in general, a heart condition, bad knees or something, take a cab. Elvia will call one for you.
We were five adults. My wife and I were in the master bedroom, which was huge and very comfortable. Our sons shared another huge room with a private bath on the bottom floor. Our friend was in third bedroom that was also large and very comfortable, also with a private bath.
The town itself is as exciting and beautiful as you can imagine. It is very clean. There isn't a stop sign or a traffic light in the older city, and not many on the outskirts. People navigate the crowded streets with courtesy and good humor, which I think tells you all you need to know about the wonderful people who live there.
Do get down to the central plaza on Friday nights and Saturdays. Multiple wedding parties are celebrating, each with its own band and theme. Great fun.
The only (small) problems with the place is that there are a lot of stairs and that in a high wind the windows rattle pretty loudly. Some visitors with walking problems may find the house difficult to navigate. These are trivial complaints compared to the charm and comfort of this place.
We just returned from this beautiful property and miss it already. The home is even more lovely than in the photos. The design of the home, the furnishings and the artwork are all spectacular. By the end of our eight day stay, we were still discovering hidden design features and art that made us smile. It's quite amazing as the home is large, yet each room and space are comfortable and inviting. There are fireplaces throughout that provide added warmth on those cooler evenings. The gardens and balconies are as beautiful as the house. The view from the rooftop is truly amazing.
We loved Elvia, the cook/housekeeper, who prepared a truly delicious breakfast and midday meal for us daily. Her homemade soups were incredible and everything was fresh and filled with local flavors.
Paula is great to deal with and went out of her way to accommodate our requests, including storing our luggage ahead of check-in, having margarita fixings and cervesas waiting for us, recommending where to go and what to do, and allowing a slightly later check-out. She put us in touch with her driver, who made transport to and from the Leon airport fast and easy.
San Miguel itself is just a magical place to visit. The people are kind, the costs are low, restaurants and bars are great, and you are surrounded by art, beauty and culture.
There were five of us on this trip, ranging in age from 27 to 60, and we all had a wonderful and unforgettable time.
