Where the La Have River flows into the Atlantic Ocean, “The House, Eh” looks out across a tidal beach and gorgeous sunsets. Peace prevails here, but there is quiet activity from morning till night. On the water, sail boats catch the river breeze and glide out to the open sea. Lobster boats come in from a long day hauling traps. A huge scallop trawler heads out for a 21-day trip, from which it will return with its belly full of the sweetest scallops in the world. At low tide, one of the best kept secrets in Lunenburg County is revealed: Oxner Beach stretches around a point where the river meets the ocean. Kids can swim, dogs can run, couples can stroll.
The main house is furnished with many family antiques and local artifacts. A beautiful east facing deck is the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee. At water's edge, a large sundeck, and a screened-in porch provide relaxing spots for both sunny and rainy afternoons. Two bathrooms, a well equipped kitchen, a living room, a den with 32 in HDTV , DVD player and a large dining room complete the property. At low tide, the beach is revealed and offers a perfect spot for the entire family. The property offers a haven of peace and comfort, space and light, with ready access to the thousand delights of Nova Scotia's South Shore.
The Sister's that own the property have done a great deal of work with the restoration and transformation of The House,Eh with each room having it's own unique personal character. They thoughtfully provide boggie boards for the beach, cabinet full of board games and puzzles . At the front of the property there is a large yard to play badminton, croquet and ring toss . One of the sister's is an interior decorator and has put tons of personality throughout the house, with lots of thoughtful fun color combinations, unique local art, interesting antiques and fun little touches throughout, that she has collected over the years. When you walk though the door you will see all the unique personal touches that make the place special and really feels very inviting with tons of charm.
There are two main buildings to the property .
The main house with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms ( one with large shower, the other with a claw foot tub) large den , dining area , large living room, fully equipped kitchen, side deck with BBQ , table and chairs.
The second building is a charming rustic cabin with a screened in porch and a joining deck. This building is right down by the water. You can sit out in the evening there and have a cool drink and relax watching the spectacular setting sun over Oxner's beach.
One great special feature is a secluded beach there, we will show you more if you look on our large web site at www.nova-scotia-cottage.com and find the page at the bottom of the main page called " Oxner Beach" The web site has lots of interesting features about the house along with lots more photos. We had a great time building the site and tried to tell the story why our vacation home would be the perfect place to enjoy your vacation time.
In the summer of 1990, two sisters drove down from Toronto to visit friends who had moved to Lunenburg. We fell in love with Lunenburg County, its beautiful shoreline and maritime history, the cultural vitality of its towns and villages, and the warm and generous people who live there. Determined to spend time there every year, we set about looking for the perfect spot, and found it in 1998. Everyone told us we needed to give it a name. We considered Nova Scotia’s (and our own) Scottish heritage, and the Swiss-German roots of Lunenburg’s first settlers, but in the end we chose an entirely Canadian name: The House, Eh.
Diane Wood purchased this house in 1998
One of us fell in love with the view, the other with the house. Over the years, we have both come to love everything about the place. The dramatic tides right outside our front door, the every changing view, proximity to the LaHave River ferry and the delightful LaHave Bakery. The location, a little off the beaten track, ensures peace and quiet, but easy access to the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town town of Lunenburg, with its vibrant working waterfront, charming colourful houses, great restaurants,
The House Eh is magical. It's wraps you in relaxation! Everything has been thought of at EH. We loved the decor, so eclectic and soothing. Our vacation felt like we were visiting a friends home rather than a rental. Lunenb erg is a charming, friendly town and Mahone Bay is so pretty.
The Rose Bay grocery had any extras needed and lobster from Crowders was the best I've ever tasted.
Thank you for sharing your lovely, cosy cottage!
Everything you need is there, ready for you to come - a warm welcome with selfmade cookies and muffins -delicious !!!
The house is really large, sunny and spotless clean and so nicely decorated - we loved the kitchen and our first coffee ( also on the front steps in the morning sun ) while the kids were still asleep:
Spectacular views of every window and we enjoyed the sundown at the screen-house, or the big dining room table playing games
and ..... everything!
The house is close to Lunenberg and to several beaches - our favourite beach - Hirtle's ! for the boys to go surfing.
Thanks for all the recommendations Diane - Rose Bay general store, La Have bakery, and all the spots ...which made our stay an unforgettable summer vacation!
from Germany - August 2016
My family and I stayed in the House, Eh for 1 week this summer on our first visit to the Maritimes and it was perfect! The house is very large, sunny and immaculately clean. Everything you need is there, ready for you to come and relax. The views from all the windows are delightful and the screen-house by the water is the most perfect place to relax and enjoy the spectacular views. Our kids loved combing the beach at low tide and we loved it in all its moods.
It is a short ride to Lunenberg and very close to several beached, our favourite was Hirtle with great surf and hiking at Gaff Point. I can't possibly recommend the House Eh more, it was a perfect restful retreat!
We just came back from our vacation where we stayed in this beautiful house ( together with our 16 month old son). The house is exactly like on the photos- beautifully/ cosy decorated in a beautiful setting. The house has 4 bedrooms upstairs( 2 are connected to each other) and a bathroom? and downstairs 2 connecting living rooms and another bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen is a bit outdated, but everything works well and everything you might need for cooking can be found. They also have a play pen and a little gate upstairs at the stairs,in case you are traveling with a baby/ toddler. There is a lot to see and do in the area but the house is also perfect to spend a rainy day inside and enjoy the view. Before booking I had contact with both the house owner and the local house keeper and they are both very friendly and informed us very well of what we could expect. At arrival there were even freshly home baked blue berry muffins and cookies waiting for us in the kitchen! All in all, a great experience and I would very much recommend this house. Be prepared for monsquitos outside though and ticks, as they area around everywhere in this area ( the house has mosquito nets on every window- so don't worry about them inside the house!)
