Overview

About the property

Views! 5 Bedrooms (sleeps 9), 2 Bathrooms Steps from York Harbor Beach

Built in 1890, this historic remodeled, charming vacation home is steps from York Harbor Beach and the Harbor. You simply can't stay closer to the beach. Enjoy views of the ocean from the new large second floor deck and from most rooms. There is plenty of space for 9 people with 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, family room, and kitchen. There is also a new, large second floor deck with views of the water. New kitchen for spring/summer 2017 (pictures coming soon). In addition to the living and sleeping space on the second and third floors of the house, there is also a large storage area on the first floor with street access that is handy for storing beach gear and bikes.

The location simply can't be beat!! It takes less than one minute to walk down the hill to the beach or harbor. Wander down the cliff walk with its spectacular views of the ocean. The Wiggly Bridge is a short walk away, providing a lovely walk through the Steadman Woods. End your day with a family dinner at home or at one of the many nearby restaurants, many within walking distance.

York is a popular beach community with history, charm and accessibility. First settled in 1624 and the first incorporated city in America, the area offers a myriad of fun things to do including relaxing on the beach, fishing, sightseeing and shopping. It is home to the John Hancock Wharf and Mark Twain's summer home and is an area which still has architectural examples from the gilded age, particularly the shingle style.

There is much to do including fishing, kayaking, boating, biking, golfing, & dining in York and the surrounding communities of Kittery, Cape Neddick, Ogunquit or Portsmouth, NH. The area is known for summer theater, concerts, and the many activities in York Beach including 10 pin bowling, miniature golf, and salt water taffy and homemade ice cream . There are local forts, lighthouses. And historic homes. Rain or shine, there is an endless array of things to do.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

My family stayed at this property in mid September. It's in a great location with a short walk to the beach and to the wedding venues and a short walk into town for breakfast or snacks. It was perfect for our needs and the owners were accommodating when we had more cars than parking spaces. Would highly recommend this place when staying in York Beach, Maine.

Great location, very clean home, only some recommendations.

  • 4 of 5

Our stay was late August 2016. Seven adults, a teenager and a toddler (not all related but good friends) shared this home for a week. The location is amazing - very close to the beach, local walking/running areas and attractions (including Wiggly Bridge) and a short ride to the supermarket and other popular towns. I walked miles every day for fun! Access to the first floor office was GREAT to store our beach gear so we didn't have to lug it up and down - the stairs are steep and many! You can easily fit 3 cars in their parking slots and our extra car was safe at the local church. The only thing about the location I didn't like is that it's on a very busy intersection, so there are always cars and people walking by.

The home itself was immaculate and well decorated (simple beachy feel). The kitchen included everything you need to cook for a large group (except a lobster pot!) and the dining room table or deck table accommodated all of us so we could dine together. I loved the separate back TV room, which allowed for all of us to partake in activities of different noise level at the same time. There was only basic cable, so I brought along my Apple TV (or if you have a Roku or Chromecast) with Netflix and Hulu so we could watch movies together at night or on a rainy day. Towels for the bathroom and beach are provided, along with sheets for the beds. The awning on the porch is a HUGE plus - great to keep you cool on the deck and it especially helped with the temp in the main living/dining area inside during the day.

The minuses of the property were few, but inconvenient. Three of the bedrooms (one queen, the full and the one twin) have large open vents above the doorways (I believe for the new central A/C upstairs), but downstairs noise funnels up the stairs and down the hall (all wood flooring and little fabric to absorb noise) and that made those rooms very noisy. Our group was not on the same sleep schedule so even basic conversation disrupted those trying to sleep or nap. Mirrors were not provided in every room, and when the whole group is trying to get ready at the same time, the bathrooms ended up getting "backed up" because of the mirror issue. It would be great for a few more mirrors in the bedrooms. Finally, there was not enough seating in the main living room for everyone to comfortably relax together. A sectional (like in the TV room), more chairs or another sofa would be helpful for full group together time.

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for your comments. The vents above the three doorways are the width of the door and about 4 inches high and have been used for better circulation of heat in the winter (the house was built in 1890). There are newly installed air conditioning vents in each room keeping each room at a comfortable temperature in the summer. Thanks for your recommendation for the mirrors in the bedrooms. There is seating for 6 in main living area with an additional 2 "poofs" and 10 dinging chairs from the adjacent the dining area that most guests that have allowed flexible seating.

Beautiful home and location!

  • 5 of 5

The home was perfect for our family. The 5 bedrooms allowed us to have our 16 year old daughter and 2 friends at one end of house and our son and daughter-in-law with there 2 yr old and 5 month at the other end of house. The little ones enjoyed the Harbor Beach during the morning, and the older girls enjoyed both the Harbor Beach and Long Sands. The house was meticulously clean and equipped with everything we needed.

Spacious, immaculate beach house with large balcony and only 1 short block to beach.

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property for our large family. Spacious, bright and the perfect York location. One short block to beach, nice walk to town for bike rentals, ice cream, coffee, pizza or bagels, and plenty of scenic views along beach, harbour, wiggly bridge/nature preserve and gorgeous seaside homes. A short drive to more touristy attractions, outlets and golf. Kitchen is spare but clean and will have what you need to feed a big gang. Kevin is accessible and responsive (thank you!) Would highly recommend and hope to stay here again. Basic cable. (Sports fanatics beware.... no ESPN.)

Great Stay, Right By the Beach

  • 5 of 5

The cottage in York is a great property, located a block away from a beautiful public beach. It's huge; there's easily room for an entire family, and a couple extra relatives. Off-street parking in a historic neighborhood, WiFi, full kitchen, two bathrooms; it's really perfect for a weekend getaway in Maine. Highly recommended.

Amazing Winter Weekend Stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband, three kids (2, 4 and 7), parents and I spend a wonderful winter weekend at Thompson Block Cottage. The house was just remodeled and had everything we needed for a winter weekend in York Harbor. It was open, light and spotless. The bathroom on the second floor appeared brand new, kitchen appliance were also new and the beds were very comfortable. There was plenty of room for the kids in the house to play while we were enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day. The views from the house of the beach were beautiful. We bundled up for walks on the beach, had a cozy family dinner at the York Harbor Inn, and did a little shopping in Kittery at the outlets. A perfect place for an extended family getaway. We plan on coming back again this summer!
