About Mary Alice

Born and raised Michigander, and have lived in Grand Rapids for 30 years.

Mary Alice purchased this house in 2012

Why Mary Alice chose Michigan

Oh my, where to begin? I knew the previous owner very well. His name was Red and he lived on this street for more than 50 years. I brought him Sunday dinner every week and we were good friends. After he passed away, the family agreed to sell me the home.

Little did I know what was in store for me!

We had it quickly renovated in 2012 in order for it be move in ready. Almost immediately after the renovations were finished, we experienced the worst flood in 100 years. The entire house needed to be rebuilt from the inside out.

It was then that I realized I wanted to make this into a wonderful home for travelers and vacationers. Two years later we've created a custom home for travelers to enjoy this wonderful spot on the Grand River.

What makes this house unique

Location! This house has it's own piece of the river. It's absolutely perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. At night you can sit outside and stare up at the stars, and during the day you can feel the refreshing breeze off the water.

Very Clean, Modern and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

J's place was so nice! Don't let the drive up deter you! My husband and I could not have been happier with the accommodations. Very clean and modern. The view is also great! Hopefully we will be back again!

Beautiful Spot Overlooking the Grand River

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at J's place the last three days while we visited Art Prize in Grand Rapids. Beautiful home overlooking the river, and just a short ten minute drive to downtown. This place is quiet and has all the amenities. It was over ninety degrees each day we were here, and the air conditioning ran flawlessly. Highly recommend it.

Great View; Great Location to Amenities

  • 4 of 5

We loved the area, bike trails and the house was comfortable. Bathroom a little small...but we managed. Owner most accommodating including homegrown Michigan tomatoes! We would stay there again if we return to bike.

The Little House by the River

  • 5 of 5

Mary Alice provides a lovely retreat on the Grand River that includes everything one needs to relax and enjoy the surrounding area. The house is off busy main roads, but once here, it feels like an oasis unto itself, not near larger towns.

People have already commented on how well stocked the house is and the new appliances (with full-size refrigerator and laundry facilities), but what we found most remarkable is Mary Alice supplies 3 lb. of fresh coffee and leaves anything fresh in the refrigerator and cabinets others have left behind. We’ve stayed in many rentals and this was a first. We didn’t have to rush to a market to buy eggs and bread for the next morning, which was great after a long flight and drive here. We also knew that if we had food leftover from our stay, we could leave it for those who follow us here.

Mary Alice lives next door if you need anything, but isn’t intrusive. In 6 nights, the loudest noise we heard were cicadas in the trees at night (but once inside, we couldn’t hear them).

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at J's Place the last week in July, the weather was beautiful and we had a wonderful stay. Mary Alice greeted our son, he came a day before we arrived, and did a walk through to make sure we knew where everything was, Mary Alice lives next door and is available if needed, but we had complete privacy, she is a charming owner. Everything in the property is new, the kitchen is wonderfully stocked with dishes, pots & pans and utensils if you choose to stay in and cook, there is also a small charcoal bar-b-que outside. The bed was clean and made up and there was a stack of fresh towels in the bathroom. We even spotted a ground hog checking out the river one morning. Our week was exactly what we wanted peaceful and comfortable, thank you Mary Alice!!
