A Few Things Left Out

  • 2 of 5

This was not the place to stay if you were going wine tasting with a group in my opinion.

A few things:

1. This place is at the top of the mountain. Getting to and from this house caused everyone in our group to get sick because it is at least 15 minutes up a winding, and sometimes one lane, road. It could not be more out of the way for where it is. Once you get there, it is solitude but it was not practical for a base of operations for wine tasting. If you have ever gotten car sick, bring dramamine.

2. The second bath just has an outdoor shower. So, its 2 bath but one shower is outside. I did not think that was clear in the ad and it sounded like there was a bonus outdoor shower.

3. The place was dirty when we arrived but after some emails they remedied that. However, stopping in to shower for dinner was not possible without using a dirty towel.

4. The toilet in the master flushes once every 20 minutes due to a slow fill. For obvious reasons, that was less than ideal.

5. It is in the middle of nowhere so if you want to get away and be away, its probably perfect.

6. The master bedroom smelled like death around the washing machine. It was obviously a dead animal or something but it was unbearable if standing over there.

Owner's Response: Yes! Don't stay here unless you want a retreat experience. This is all made very clear in our wording...we are five miles up a curvy mountain road. Yes, there's an indoor shower in main bedroom. 2nd bathroom only has bath--that's the one with outdoor shower. We felt so bad about the cleaner misunderstanding arrival time--our bad! this is a brand new cleaning person so he did not have the schedule perfect and he did not check the mouse trap. We gifted two bottles of wine to say sorry. Thanks for telling us about the slow flush, we found the pipe was clogged so that has been fixed. Gosh, i so wish you would have told us about that bad smell! I would have had cleaner come right over and trash that trap. This is the first bad review we've gotten in ten years, but that's OK...this place is rustic and we want potential guests to know that!

Woodsy Wowee

  • 5 of 5

It was a drizzling and soon to be a foggy evening when we wound our way up up up the mountain road to Maurine's place. Had I been crazy to book this place, so far from the Glen Ellen town center? Crazy like a vineyard fox! We were wary when we piled out of our cars—this is an unconventional private property, spread over four or five clustered buildings in the forest—and by the end of the 2-nite stay were all sitting around the kitchen finding excuses to squeeze every last minute out of our experience, even crafting a small bouquet of flowers for the maid, or whoever would next sit at the kitchen table. I slept like a beautiful dream on the king bed in the main cabin, awakening to a bluebird beating his wings against the glass-walled view from my pillow, a bucolic portrait of cloud-embraced trees and flora. Breathe, now I breathe deeply just remembering those mornings. My friend stayed in the smaller cabin behind us, and we would all gather in the communal, warm kitchen/living room, drinking wine or coffee, stoking the woodstove, gabbing, reading aloud from internet bits and even watching a movie or two. The blend of private/shared space has a brilliant and detailed yet rambling hippiesque vibe we guessed was a labor of both love and talent. Forgive me, Maurine, but I had to take a couple of the exquisite personalized soaps in the bath, so taken was I by the scent and textures. If I don't make it back someday, this place will always haunt me, whispering that life is short, that I should have returned.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our group enjoyed the solitude and quiet Cinque Terre provided. It was a perfect set up for 2 couples, we had everything we needed. We didn't mind the walk outside to the bath house, even in the rain! We appreciated the thoughtfulness of Maurine and Dan, they went above and beyond to make sure our stay was memorable. Our dogs were in mountain heaven!

We can't wait to come back to this townhouse! One of the best places we have stayed! How nice to have coffee on two different decks of your choice. The unit was well decorated & spotless. We cook slot and had everything needed Cynthia was wonderful to work with.

What a gem!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a dog-friendly place in Sonoma and stumbled upon this secluded hideaway. We stayed 2 nights and would have liked to have lingered longer. The grounds are well-kept, the facilities perfectly in order, and the vibe is unbeatable. Bring your provisions as you don't want to have to head down the road because you forgot some milk or whatnot. In fact, that's really the only downside I can find-- if you wanted to get to town its a bit sketchy on an unfamiliar one lane road at night--but there's really no reason to leave! We hope to visit again in the future.
