Guests love our close proximity to town and the rural country surrounding that immediately welcomes them to wind down. Staying among the vines and farmland yet only a stroll away from downtown Los Olivos makes our retreats among the most desirable places to stay in the Santa Ynez Wine Country.

The beaches and shopping of Santa Barbara is 35 minutes south. Lake Cachuma is 15 minutes away. And 45 minutes north of us is Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo, another half hour of driving and you will find yourself in the Paso Robles wine country. For theatre goers the PCPA TheaterFest offers quality performances in their outdoor theatre in Solvang, all summer long. The rolling hills and Oak trees that surround us make our home beautiful year around.
This is our 3rd time staying with Sam & Shawnda. We absolutely love the property, the Wine Merchant Café and the area. Our anniversary was exactly what we needed....too bad we couldn't stay longer.
Everything is clean, comfortable and perfect. We love all the luxurious touches including wine, cheese plate and robes and thick snuggly towels and linens. It's pure heaven!!!
We look forward to returning...

Quiet, peaceful, relaxing, beautiful, charming - what a wonderful way to spend a few days enjoying the vineyards and the Los Olivos countryside! From the moment we arrived, we knew we would be able to relax and unwind. The cottage was charming and had everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. Sam and Shawnda are extremely hospitable and pay great attention to the details in making their property inviting for visitors. We enjoyed a very nice bottle of Bernat wine and a lovely cheese platter while sitting in adirondack chairs overlooking the vineyard. Gypsy (the dog) made us feel like her home was our home and warmly greeted us whenever we returned from riding bikes into town. It was hard to leave the property during the day, but we did enjoy horseback riding in the hills nearby, lunch at the Wine Merchant & Cafe, and wine tasting in Los Olivos. Late afternoons on the property were relaxing and romantic. We look forward to coming back to visit again!
We couldn't have been happier with our stay at Shawnda and Sam's Los Olivos vineyard. After a long, late drive from LA, we were greeted with a bottle of wine from their vineyard and a delicious cheese plate. The accommodations were top notch, but what really sets this wonderful place apart is their hospitality and attention to detail. The grounds are spectacularly beautiful and we were told that were free to explore the vineyard and farm, which we did. The town of Los Olivos is just a short stroll away and we had dinner at their Wine Merchant Cafe restaurant, where we were surprised with a birthday dessert on the house. They also were nice enough to stock the unit with movies and interesting books (and great coffee). On our last day, Sam gave us a tour of the organic vineyard and farm, which was incredibly interesting and tasty! When we got home, we continued to enjoy the experience by having the bottle of complimentary wine, which was one of, if not the best, Syrahs we've ever had. Lastly, their dog is a total sweetheart who seems to love getting belly rubs from the guests. Thank you for a magical stay!
Thank you Sam and Shawnda for sharing your VRBO rental with my wife and I recently. The views from the backyard were stunning. The condo was well equipped and had everything that we needed. We really noticed how quiet your place is. Nice 10 - 15 minute walk into town. Your kids are so polite and the road hockey practice made us fell right at home. We also enjoyed our daily visits with your dogs. They would come and say hello and then they were gone. We definitely recommend.
My husband and I stayed at the Bernat Vineyard Retreat for a couple days last week. We loved it!
Before we even arrived, Shawnda contacted us and gave us a lot of information about our stay, the location, etc. It was incredibly helpful so we knew what to expect, and because of it there were no surprises. She was also kind enough to make a reservation for us at their restaurant (which was wonderful, by the way). That same level of hospitality extended throughout our stay. For example, on our first morning, I noticed that there wasn't a filter for the coffee maker. I texted Shawnda and, in less than 30 minutes, Sam appeared at our door with a spare filter. Every time we interacted with Shawnda and Sam, they were exceptionally friendly. They were also excellent about striking the perfect balance between letting us know that they were available to us, while also giving us privacy.
The furry hosts (Gypsy, Juliet, and Fiona) were equally friendly. As an animal lover, it really added to the trip to be able to see them around the property and pet them. Gypsy was especially loving - upon arrival, she ran up to my door and gave me lots of love. If you're not an animal person, then don't fear: If you leave them along, they'll leave you alone.
In addition to the two- and four-legged hosts, the place itself was wonderful. The retreat was clean, inviting, comfortable, and had everything we needed. We also enjoyed all the "extras": A bottle of their delicious Estate Syrah, a cheese plate, a candle (which smelled so good that I ended up buying one at their cafe), and bath toiletries by Grapeseed. We didn't cook while we were there, but the kitchen was fully stocked so we could have.
The grounds were also lovely. Sam let us know that it was okay to roam around their property, and we are glad we could. It was nice to walk around their farm area, check out the vineyards, and meet their horse. We also enjoyed sitting outside on the patio furniture, soaking in the sights and the sun. It was very relaxing.
The walk into "downtown" Los Olivos isn't bad; but, we decided to drive in, knowing that we would be bringing back bottles of wine that we purchased after tastings - #dontjudge :-) It was an easy drive that only took a few minutes. (Note: We were there Wed-Fr, so we were always able to find parking; it may be harder on weekends).
If we ever visit Los Olivos again (we likely will), we will definitely try to book this retreat again.
We stayed at this beautiful property for a week. The cottage was comfortable and very attractively decorated. The patio overlooking the vineyard was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day. We were greeted with a nice bottle of Bernat wine and a lovely cheese platter upon our arrival, not to mention a warm welcome from Gypsy, a very sweet dog. Shawnda was very accommodating and helpful with local information on hiking, etc. The property is located in a lovely, quiet country setting, great for walking or biking. We loved the Wine Merchant Cafe in Los Olivos and ate there several times (especially recommend the lamb shanks!). We definitely recommend this property!
Los Olivos is in the heart of the Santa Barbara wine country nestled amongst rolling hills and oaks. Our small town is full of charm with quaint shops, eateries, and over twenty tasting rooms. Surrounded by equestrian farms and some of California's most sought after real estate. We are 10 minutes from the Danish town of Solvang and the western themed town of Santa Ynez, 15 minutes from Lake Cachuma (kayaking and fishing only lake), 35 minutes to the nearest beaches, 40 minutes from Santa Barbara, 60 minutes from San Luis Obispo and 2.5 hours from L.A.. Our area became internationally recognized in the Academy Award winning movie, Sideways. We look forward to welcoming you to the Beautiful Santa Ynez Valley!
