Building the Fernald Point Carriage House was a labor of love for me. Through out the home, I was able use milled cedar from most all trees that I cleared from the site. Having summered in Southwest Harbor while growning up, I am now so fortunate to be able to call this my year round home. Downeast Maine, and particularly Acadia National Park , is beautiful no matter what the season.
I also own and run the Mckinley Lane Cabin which is new to the market for the summer season of 2014. You can find it at homeaway #941918

Whether you are looking for a quiet getaway or want an outdoor active week or two with a friend, the Carriage House is where you want to be. It is ideally located smack dab in the middle of where the mountains meet the sea. The Carriage House was only built a few years ago so you can still smell the fresh wood while feeling like you are in a luxury loft cabin. There are even fresh linens in the cedar chest in the living room to enjoy a comfortable sleep on the futon if one bed isn’t enough for your group. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the nicest place I will have ever lived. I was lucky enough to be there for a whole summer but would go back for a vacation in a heartbeat to get my fix of picturesque living.
This was our third and longest visit to Mt. Desert Island. We knew we wanted to stay in Southwest Harbor and I was delighted to find the one-bedroom Carriage House. It was the perfect space for two people. Very quiet, comfortable and well appointed. A great place to unwind from the stress of everyday life. The location is within walking distance of "downtown" Southwest Harbor and Flying Mountain trail head. Debbie (owner) was great to work with through the whole rental process and promptly responded to all inquires and questions. We would definitely stay here again!
We loved our stay at Carriage house. It could not be better. Deborah is always so helpful and the place is exactly like the pictures. It matches the place we were looking for our wedding anniversary - calm, quiet, full of green around and a short distance from the most amazing Acadia National Park places. It is certainly worth to go back soon we have a chance.
I searched for awhile to find a place for us to stay in the Acadia area. Most houses were too big or too expensive for just the two of us. The inns in Bar Harbor seemed just a little too "stuffy" for our tastes. The motels seemed to lack character. Then, I stumbled upon this perfect rental. Wow...we couldn't have been happier! The updated carriage house was beautifully situated amidst the trees. Looking out the windows, I felt like we were in an upscale tree-house complete with charming decor and full amenities! We cooked nearly all of our meals in. The unit was fully supplied with cookware, stemware and utensils. Full sized appliances helped make the experience easy and comfortable (we've often had apartment sized appliances in studios and one-bedroom places where we've stayed in the past). There was even a little gas grill on the cozy deck (a great place to hang out with a glass of wine or cup of coffee). The unit itself was quite spacious and suited our needs perfectly. Deborah, the owner, greeted us and made us feel at home from the start. She made valuable recommendations for our (essentially) first visit to Acadia, but never interfered with our privacy. In terms of location...while I didn't know Bar Harbor from Southwest Harbor from Seawall before we arrived, I was so pleased that we stayed on the "quiet side." While it was a bit of a drive to get to the loop road, it was so nice to get away from the congestion surrounding Bar Harbor. We enjoyed several fantastic hikes within 2-5 miles of the property where we saw few, if any people (on Memorial Day weekend!). The town of Southwest Harbor was cute and easily walkable. There were a few restaurants, craft stores and a wine and cheese shop, so there's no need to return to Bar Harbor after strolling it once (if you prefer to spend your time bicycling and hiking in Acadia as we did). I would highly recommend this accommodation and would definitely stay again should our travels take us back to the area.
It was the perfect way to celebrate a 50th birthday!!!
Beautiful location and so many things to do close by.
The owner was very courteous and helpful

I recently spent 31/2 weeks at this wonderful carriage house on Mt. Desert Island right outside of S.W.Harbor. I could not have been happier in any other lodging. I was traveling alone for the purpose of doing a photography project and found the living quarters, people, and town itself to be so very hospitable and welcoming. The carriage house is as charming as it looks in the photos and the owner was very available and helpful in a nber of ways. S.W. Harbor is a good destination year round. Loved my stay.
We had a delightful time at this well-kept, clean and tastefully appointed retreat. It was bigger than it appeared in photos. We are so glad that we chose to stay in Southwest Harbor rather than Bar Harbor. The property is set in the woods, away from any other houses. We loved the privacy. The owner was helpful from the begining in answering all our questions. We arrived right after most restaurants and activites were closed for the season. We had a nice dinner at Dry Dock, the only place open in the evening. The rest of the time we cooked as the kitchen was well-equipped. We loved our boating adventure on the mail boat out of Northeast Harbor to the Cranberry Islands. I hope we can visit again.
