Murray and Gail Bruce purchased this villa in 2001
We sailed into Cane Garden Bay in 1970, and thought we had died and gone to heaven. We dropped anchor, swam ashore and were welcomed into Stanley’s, the only restaurant on the beach, it was set among the palm trees, one even had a tire swing, this gorgeous beach was deserted, and we thought we had found paradise.
30 years passed and we had the opportunity to purchase our dream house that over looks that very first landing. Stanley’s and Cane Garden Bay has grown. The bay is now one of the most fun locations on the island. Alive with pleasures, water sports, sailing, surfing and corn rolls for the kids. At night it lights up with music, dining and dancing. We have had a great 10 years renovating the house keeping the style consistent with West Indian tradition and love of color. We wish we could be there all year round but work calls us back to the states and we love the opportunity to share FOUR WINDS with those that love romance and a taste of traditional Caribbean living.
Four Winds is a great place to share with adult couples. It is not a pretentious villa but rather three separate comfortable cottages. Two cottages behind the main house share a bathroom and open air shower. Two geckos visited me every day while I showered and I gave them names. The views are absolutely beautiful and two wonderful beaches (cane Garden bay and Brewers Bay )are easy access but you absolutely must have a car unless you love mountain hiking . The kitchen is well stocked to produce large meals. We had a fabulous Christmas dinner for 14 when the other family members joined us from their sailboat. This is a beautiful place to relax and I would highly recommend it. We loved the sound of tree frogs every night .
I'll start this review by quoting one of my 6 year old twin grandsons . . . "In my world, this is the best pool in the universe." It can't get much better than that. The boys each obtained certificates for completing a free style, double lap of the Four Winds Villa pool and that was just one of the many highlights and highpoints of our family stay. I have been going to Tortola since 1968 and have stayed in houses, apartments and hotels. Four Winds was the best overall experience that I have had. My family has joined me for the last thrteen years and we cook and swim and explore and thoroughly enjoy Tortola and its people. Four Winds was a perfect base, close to our favorite Cane Garden Bay and easy driving to everywhere else we roamed, from West End to East End. The cooking and dining facilities were perfect and we hope to return again. Next time, the boys can try four laps (or more).
We have stayed at Four Winds for the last 3 years in a row and have just booked it for next year, again!
This property is historical, unique and very special, but for those who want turn down service and breakfast in bed, this is not the house for you.
If you are looking for a "home" away from home, a place where the vistas of Tortola are there for your picture taking and soul. A place where the most magnificent beaches, sunsets and dining are down the mountain and across the most beautiful drives you will ever take, this is it.
You must have a car for the beaches and night life, which are awesome... but the pool, outdoor living room, dining room and magnificent gardens at Four Winds are there for you to relax and enjoy.
We have stayed in many, many houses on most every island in the Caribbean.
We now call Four Winds "home" and will look forward to coming "home" every year.
Four Winds is an absolutely amazing place. My girlfriend and I had one of the best weeks of our lives behind the gates of this tropical paradise. The gorgeous ocean view, the tranquil jungle setting, simple artisan design, the peaceful vibe, outdoor shower... Magic!
If you're looking for luxury this is not the place -- the shower pressure is barely a drip, there's no AC... Four Winds is so great, it really doesn't matter though.
Just a wonderful place and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone that loves beauty and tranquility. We can't wait to return.
Our family just enjoyed a heavenly week in the Four Winds Villa. It is tastefully and comfortably decorated and furnished. There are several options for sitting/hanging out. The views are spectacular, the gardens, lush and beautiful. We have visited Cane Garden Bay several times over the years and this was, by far, the most wonderful of times, thanks to this fabulous setting and accommodation. We WILL return!
This house has obviously been restored with love and care. It is welcoming, airy, light and colourful.
I agree completely with the other reviewers - within hours one is at home and absorbed in the foliage, the colours and the light. I have visited several times, and always sleep deeply and well in the cool breezes which you can direct through the house using the louvres on the windows. No glazing, no aircon!
Everything you need is there, in its place: the kitchen is very well equipped, and cooking for a family is easy. You can have provisions and drink delivered, but it's not absolutely necessary, as there is a convenience shop below in Cane Garden Bay, and the large supermarket in Road Town is only 15 minutes drive.
Cane Garden is a very lively resort, with numerous bars and eating places. There is frequently live music on the beach or on boats - but this does not disturb you at Four Winds, as you are so high above it.
I should also mention the other bay below the house, Brewer's Bay, which is undeveloped and perfect for snorkeling or sunbathing away from the crowds - it also has a simple bar for when you need a cool drink. The energetic could walk down and back up, but the return climb is very steep in parts. Your reward is the expansive views to Jost van Dyke, St Thomas and the small islands in the channel.
