Unique features of this house -

The view and open-air feel of this well appointed house is unparalleled. The architectural design of windows and sliding glass offers panoramic vistas of Pacific and mountainscapes wherever your eye is drawn. Close neighbors are Canadians, who live here year around and assist in property management to ensure your experience is first class.

This small oasis of Costa Rican geography, from Dominical to Palmar Norte, is unique in that the Fila Costena Mountains sweep down so close to the coastline that they virtually touch the ocean.

As a result, eco-activities are endless. Under the careful guardianship of the Costa Rican people, who are helpful, friendly and generous, the wild areas have been carefully protected from unrestrained development. The indigenous rainforest growth and wildlife of the Tres Rios Valley make this a peaceful Garden of Eden.

Casa Fila Costena: This jewel-box of a “Casa” is nestled between the majestic peaks of the Fila Costena, the coastal mountain range of Southwest Pacific Costa Rica, and the Pacific Ocean. Perched on a private ridge with an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean, the estuary of the Rio Terraba, and Isla Ballena; your front yard is the rainforest valley of Tres Rios complete with a 90 metre waterfall which tumbles into the cooling waters of the river. Hiking, rappelling and canyoneering await at your doorstep.Self guided trails have been cut through the primary rainforest, just minutes from the house.

Your morning wakeup includes the echoing call of the Howler Monkey troops, the chirp of the Toucan, and the chortle of the Laughing Falcon White faced monkeys crash through the trees in the valley below.

The seabreeze during the day and the fresh mountain air at night make air-conditioning unnecessary.

Your morning starts with a swim in the privacy of the infinity edge pool, only steps away from either of the two master bedroom suites.

Activity and Entertainment: The Ojochal/Uvita area of Costa Rica is perpetually green even in the “dry” season. Activities in this area are endless. In the valley, within walking distance of the house there are numerous trails and opportunities to hike in primary rainforest. It is never hard to find your own private stream or pool in the numerous rivers that cascade down from the mountain peaks. This area is well known for its numerous pristine beaches, and within a short drive there is surfing in Dominical, scuba diving or snorkeling at Isla Ballena or Cano Island, zip-lining or bird watching at Hacienda Baru, a Mangrove river trip on the Sierpe, river kayaking on the Rio Terraba. You are of course on the doorstep of Corcovado National Park - one of the most biodiverse park preserves in the world. A day trip to Boruca - home of the Boruca mask carvers, horse back riding, deep sea fishing, golfing, whitewater rafting if you are looking for more adrenalin packing, are just some of the activities you might try.

Perfect Escape!

  • 5 of 5

This is our FOURTH and NOT our last stay at Bruce and Valerie's beautiful location, we hope! The design and situation of this Casa has always been second to none and so was this visit.

Everything continues to be beautifully maintained and updated visit to visit amidst the amazing maturing and greening of the grounds; inspiring both us and the area birds which are as varied as the blooms!

The view of the valley and the ocean from anywhere in the house couldn't be improved on... or so we THOUGHT! Since our last visit, a beautiful Palapa has been added to the grounds which takes wonderful advantage of yet another beautiful view; the mountainside, the gardens and the endless species of butterflies. (Morning coffee under the Palapa is our newest "tradition")!

Also new this year, is an upgraded, state of the art, barbecue that has been tucked into a newly developed outdoor prep and entertaining area; even cooking has been made a relaxing experience!

The mountain neighbours and the property management supports always add to our experience. We feel supported and confident in setting up our time to include anything we want. Provisioning in town is made so simple, that it makes 'leaving the world behind" and "accessing what we need" an easy balance.

From this location, we have, over the years, taken advantage of so many of the offered area activities. (zip lining, sea kayaking, stunning Mangrove tours, Corcovado National Park tours and more). This trip, however, we needed to just 'unplug'. Other than devoting one day to repelling down waterfalls in our own "backyard" on the mountain (a must for us), we found that we could just tuck into our "tree house" and not want for a thing. With Howler Monkeys to nudge us awake each day and Cicadas to nudge us towards day's end, everything in the middle was ...? Well, they don't say "Pura Vida" around there for nothing.

Thank you Valerie and Bruce for continuing to share your beautiful home!

Owner's Response: It is always a pleasure to have return guests. The dining table has been replaced with a handcrafted piece, made of beautiful local woods Ron Ron, Cristobal, and Purple heart. This year we once again have seen 4 pairs of scarlet macaws fly over the valley. Looking forward to your return !!!!!! Pura Vida.

The perfect honeymoon destination!

  • 5 of 5

I can't imagine a better place to honeymoon. The secluded nature of this home tucked in the midst of lush jungle wildlife makes it peaceful, adventurous and incredibly romantic. My partner and I are certain we'll be back to celebrate again. We would highly recommend to anyone looking to unplug from distractions and connect to what is most important.

Beautiful home in a great part of Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

This home is beautiful - the pictures do not do it justice! It is about a 15-20 minute ride on a dirt road from the main highway but well worth it. Wonderful privacy, amazing views, and so peaceful! We woke up early to hear the howler monkeys and see all of the amazing birds including toucans. We also saw capuchin monkeys passing through on a couple of occasions. We made the trip to Corcovado and also checked out Ojochal, Uvita, and Dominical. Bruce was great to deal with and made everything so easy for us. We hope to go back again someday!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed the house. The road is in fabulous condition due to a very organized property owners association. We have added a brand new all stainless Barbeque to the new outdoor kitchen/entertainment area. Guests love to sit under the new thatched palapa and watch the sun peek over the mountains in the morning............

The drive up to this casa is amazing in itself, but when you walk through the front doors and see the pool and the view, you will not want to leave. I would definitely stay here again and would just plan to stock up on groceries and hang out. Everything you need to feel right at home is provided.

Owner's Response: That is exactly how we feel every time we return. The magic of walking through the fronts doors and peering over the infinity edge pool into your own private rainforest below is indeed magic!!!!!! Bruce and Val

Peaceful Mountain Jungle Wildlife Sunset vacation

  • 5 of 5

This is our second trip to Costa Rica and to this house- once just wasn't enough after experiencing the most relaxing vacation with unbeatable views, wildlife at your doorstep, an impeccably designed, built and furnished home. The pictures of the house are right on, if not even understating how amazing it is in person. The new palapa is great for morning coffee and bird watching, a great addition to an already ideal spot! The pool is unbeatable, it is hard to imagine a reason to leave the house, but if you do, you won't regret it. The beaches are great, ventanas and Leonora beach club, amazing restaurants (citrus & exotica) and plenty of activities if you want them (Corcovado rainforest tour, OSA zip lining, horse rides). Did I mention the daily toucans & howler monkeys at the house and the ocelot we saw tonight on our way home from dinner? Amazing! The year rounders here on the mountain, the Hamilton's, are great should you need anything, and the owners are also great! Renting a car locally is a must, a rugged manual preferably, and getting here from San Jose is a decent trek (hire a driver!) but it is all so worth it! Hopefully this won't be our last visit to this magical hidden gem in a still un-touristy part of CR!

Hope to Return Soon!

  • 5 of 5

Having briefly viewed this property a year ago, we could hardly wait to return. We stayed with good friends and found that with the two master bedrooms, there was no issue as to who had which room. The tap water made for excellent safe drinking water. The washer and drier within the unit were invaluable. The property is very well maintained, looks brand new. The layout and design were well thought out. The gardens are remarkable, flowers in bloom everywhere. We loved the infinity pool with the view. We enjoyed watching the humming birds in the morning while looking over the valley to the ocean in the morning with a fresh cup of Costa Rican coffee. A very "zen" environment was definitely achieved. There is tremendous privacy afforded by the gardens and architecture.

We were taken on hikes along the river and repelling by Tony Hamilton, another resident in the community. We enjoyed a dinner with the neighbor and his many stories and great dry sense of humor. Everyone is so helpful, from assisting with transportation to directing us to activities and attractions. There is a real sense of community. The maps, books, suggestions were all very useful. The WiFi was helpful, however stopped functioning part way through our visit which we understand happens in Costa Rica.

The 4 wheel drive vehicle we rented was very useful and necessary. We visited a few beaches and had meals at local restaurants. We did cook several meals ourselves in a well equipped kitchen, however. There were many other potential activities that we did not take advantage of, but will during future visits. We enjoyed the recently finished walking trail that had just been completed.

I left promising myself to return to this location in the future. Our biggest regret was not staying longer. Thank you Bruce and Val for sharing your beautiful casa!

Owner's Response: You had bad luck with the WIFI -we were just at the house for a few weeks prior to your visit and had very reliable WIFI everyday, it is certainly not rocket speed on some occasions, but has steadily improved every year. Next season we will be considering a new provider with a "guaranteed" download rate- we will see! This is Costa Rica!!!!!
