A recently completed cottage on 2.5 acres of woodland with 150 feet of lakeshore on Cargill Pond in Liberty, Maine. Cargill Pond has no public access and is approximately 1 mile long, making it a very quiet oasis for your vacation. Peace and tranquility reign as most watercraft are non-motorized on the pond.
There is a sunny outdoor seating area and patio looking towards the pond with a gas grill, table and chairs for outdoor eating. Dotted throughout the property are handmade stools and benches made from tree stumps, plus a hammock and skychair to while away the hours. At the lake shore there is a picnic table and chairs surrounding a fire pit for nightly fires and smores eating! We provide a good stock of firewood. The property also has two kayaks, beginners rig windsurfer and a canoe available for guests to use. On the water there are two docks for swimming and boating and offshore a swim float. There are plenty of fish in the pond, just buy a licence from the local shop and try your hand, either from the dock or the canoe.
The master bedroom is on the first floor with a queen bed looking out to the lake and a sliding door to the outside lawn. Both bathrooms are also downstairs, the full bath has a shower/tub combo with jets. The the sleeping loft is up a spiral staircase and sleeps 4, with a queen bed and two twin beds. There is also a small balcony off the loft great to enjoy the morning sun. The open plan living and dining room and the kitchen have magnificent views to the lake through large windows and french doors. The kitchen is well appointed with an electric range, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave and coffee maker. There is also a washer dryer for your use.
Please note we are unable to accept any pets at this property no matter how well behaved.
The cottage inside has many books, children's games for all ages, legos and puzzles for those rainy days. We have basic satellite internet with limited data, enough to check email but no streaming. Most people find that 3/4G works fine for most carriers. Immerse yourself in the outdoors!
Cargill Pond empties in to Lake St George and is the perfect place to make memories, we have a Loon nesting pair and if you are lucky the beavers swim by at dusk. It is a place to completely unplug, relax and just enjoy time with family and friends. Midcoast Maine is close by with plenty to explore. Please let us know what you might be interested in and we will be happy to make suggestions and assist you in planning your vacation. We have lived in the area for 18 years and know the area well plus Liz manages both the visitor centers in Camden and Rockland for the local Chamber of Commerce.
As owners we now live here throughout the year and put the cottage up for rent for several weeks during the summer while we enjoy tiny house living.
We bought the land in 2004 and slowly Gary cleared space for the cottage and then took about 5 years to design and build what you see now. A lot of thought went into the placement of the cottage as well as the flow of the living space. We sold up in Rockland last year and downsized now enjoying Cargill Pond year round. So Gary's building skills have turned to a tiny house which we live in on the property during the summer months.
Elizabeth Burrell purchased this cottage in 2004
Cargill Cottage allows you to escape from your normal life, slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of Maine. Plenty of things to do around the pond or locally. If you want to experience a 'Maine summer' then this is a good introduction. Peace and tranquility and yet accessible to many of the Maine attractions. New in 2015 Liberty now has a craft brewing location. Liberty Craft Beer is about a 2 minute drive from the cottage. Open Wednesday and Friday evening and all day Saturday for beer tasting and coming soon light food. There is a balcony with a great view. Quite a special spot.
Belfast is the nearest large town at 25 miles away, a wonderful waterfront, restaurants, and shops to enjoy, it is on the way to Acadia National Park, most certainly worth a day of your time. Go early and have breakfast on the road and come home late! Camden is 26 miles away and Rockland 28 miles both worth a visit and we have lots of information in the cottage about both towns. There are schooner trips, lobster boat rides and other water activities at both; restaurants and shops worth checking out. Rockland has the Farnsworth Art Museum, Maine Lighthouse Museum and Midcoast Children's Museum. Owls Head is 3 miles from Rockland and you can enjoy the Owls Head Transport Museum and the Breakwater Vineyard all worth visiting. If you are interested in Lighthouses there are several within a day's drive and we also have many Vineyards to visit and sample local Maine wines all within an easy drive of the cottage. There is plenty to do if you want to leave but many guests don't and enjoy slowing down and just swimming, canoeing and fishing their time away.
We are unable to solely rent to people under the age of 25 years, unless it is a couple on their honeymoon.
Summer really is the best time in Maine but it can be short! There is so much to see and do, mostly outside enjoying the warm sun, long days and beautiful views. Maine get's busy but it is all relative and staying out in Liberty you are close to great sights and beaches but away from the crowds. The weather is hot and beautiful and there is every reason to be outside enjoying yourself. The cottage is a perfect summer place, cool inside, shady trees and places to relax, a warm very swimmable lake and lots to do without getting in the car. As the Fall arrives this cottage provides a great location to enjoy the colors from the sitting room, the dock or drive the area and enjoy all that Maine has to offer in September and October. Weather in September can often be perfect, warm days, clear blue skies and no crowds! Peak for the mid-coast is usually October 15!
Lake front, swim float, docks to swim from, kayaks, windsurfer and a canoe. Well equipped cottage to allow you to cook your own meals and relax. A short drive to the coast and Acadia National Park all great day trips. Then books and games for the evenings as well as a great fire pit for smores.
This was the perfect getaway for our first trip to Maine. The cottage is lovely and the setting is peaceful. We enjoyed riding on my husband's Harley and visiting some lovely towns. We went whale watching (saw many fin whales and harbor seals). We also wen to the Lobster Fest in Rockland.
We had our coffee by the lake each morning and a campfire at night. We hope to return someday and enjoy another relaxing week.
Cargill cottage was a lovely and relaxing home for our family to spend some much needed time together. The kayaks and canoes were used every day for fishing, exploring the island, and checking out the loons. In doors and out, the owners anticipated all our vacation needs!
Beautiful house in great location - the lake is pristine and quiet. Games, frosted glasses and kayaks all big hits, and the local information provided by the hosts really helpful in planning. Belfast, Rockland within easy reach for day trips, and Liberty also interesting. Wonderful break away from it all.
3rd stay at Cargill Cabin. We had an especially relaxing, joyful family holiday. Cabin is comfortably furnished and is set in a very pretty spot on Cargill Pond, perfect for swimming and paddling. Enjoyed beautiful sunsets every evening. Plenty of maps and guides were provided to steer us to some great nearby options for hiking and trail running. Took a day trip to Acadia NP. Easy drive in both directions. This is a very special spot in Maine.
Our family recently spent a week here & can say that it was one of the most relaxing, memorable vacations we have had. The cottage was everything we imagined from the pictures and more. It was beautifully crafted and the layout provided plenty of room for all five of us. The property surrounding the cottage was thoughtfully arranged with many seating areas placed where you could enjoy all of the natural beauty at any time of the day or night, my favorite being the pond in early morning. All of the activities on the lake kept us busy on sunny days. Restaurants, wineries and other small towns were only a short drive away. Liz and Gary have done an awesome job with all of their hard work in maintaining the property and providing all visitors with information and suggestions for making this place one that will certainly make you want to return. Cant thank you both enough!
Liz and Gary have created the perfect vacation home! I was ecstatic to find the cottage exactly as pictured on the website, with all the amenities of home. They have provided everything you could possibly need for your stay, (other than food), including all the outdoor toys and activities you might want. The pond is a gorgeous setting and the townspeople of Liberty were all very welcoming and friendly. During your visit, make sure you go to the Liberty Brewing Co. for a craft beer and John's Ice Cream for the best homemade ice cream ever!
This place is even better than the photos. It is an idyllic location, with plenty of comforts. The amenities were wonderful and we loved not having a TV. The campfires were great, and we enjoyed having the use of the canoe and kayaks. My kids said it best, "We've only been here one day and it feels like home." We truly had a hard time leaving, and plan to come back. The owner was extremely helpful and kind. They went out of their way to make sure we were all set and comfortable for our arrival. I would give it another star if I could....
Cargill Cottage is an easy drive from the south and enjoys a rural location on a small lake with no public access. The small Maine coastal towns of Belfast, Camden and Rockland are close by with their array of Festivals, fine and casual dining, Museums, waterfronts, art galleries, lighthouses and farmers markets. Of note is the North Atlantic Blues Festival and Lobster Festival in Rockland and the Windjammer Festival in Camden. Acadia National Park is an easy day trip as are the Maine mountains and the capital city, Augusta. There is plenty of local hiking in Camden Hills State Park and many water activity options. No shortage of things to do, 'The way life should be'.
Time your visit to be able to attend one of the many Festivals that happen throughout the summer in Maine. North Atlantic Blues festival, Belfast Celtic Festival, Maine Lobster Festival, Maine Boats and Harbor Show, Union fair, Windsor fair, Camden Windjammer Festival, Camden International Film Festival, Camden Pop Tech and Common Ground Fair; to name a few....
