About Doug and Doris

My Great Grandparents purchased this property before 1900. They worked it as a farm for many years including through the depression. My family decided to start up the farm again in 1968 so we raised Registered Jerseys. We were fortunate to know the owners of the Farm where Elsie The Borden cow resided and we were lucky enough to get a great granddaughter of hers. I named her Daisy. We showed Daisy and Clover at the local fairs and won every conceivable ribbon you could imagine. We lived that life for 5 years. It was a good time. My wife and I tore down the old house in 1991 and put up a duplex and recently decided to start the farm again. We have chickens, a 400# pig named Macon Bacon and Red Clover. We live as much of a homestead life here as we can. Any questions? Don't hesitate to ask.

Doug and Doris purchased this house in 1890

Owner's Response: First of all they arrived very late + wanted to use the hot tub which I had no problem with. I lower the temp when not in use but it was on all day. I explained our heating system as I do with every guest. The duplex is heated by 1 furnace + controlled from our side + not because people would abuse it it's that the furnace on the other side was 50 years old + taken out of service. Both houses are supplemented by forced air from a stove on location. I am very conscious of the fact of the heat and monitor the thermostat all the time. It never went below 66 at night + it was always on 72 during the day + along with the forced air it is more than comfortable. I can see their car from my living room + they never "went out to the car to get warm". Sat. night went somewhere after 11:30 for what seemed to be 2 hours. My daughter had to get up at 2:30 am that night and was up when I received a text message around that time to turn the heat up which when I looked was around 66 but turned it up. My wife gets up early every day and turns the heat up to 72 around 5-5:30am. As far as the HOT TUB is concerned. It is a 5 person tub, ok I have never had to mention this before but I asked how many would be going in the tub and they said three. I gently said that since they are not average sized women they should be aware of the fact about the water. I swear to God I never called them fat, that's outrageous. After they got out on Friday night I went to put the cover on it and noticed about 9-10" of water gone. It was dark so I could not see that the tub was used as a bath tub....IT WAS FILTHY! I found that out Sat. morning + did nothing about it as it was cold out. Well, Sat. night they wanted to use it again + instead of telling them it was dirty or did not have the proper water level in it or that they messed up the memory of the heater pump I told them that in would not heat up enough by the time they wanted to use it. This was 9:00pm mind you. The reason is two fold, there was not enough water in it and the pump failed. Ofcourse, I tried to be a good host + not accuse them that it was their fault so I was nice by saying it could not be used. So they asked to use the Dry Heat Sauna, I had to decline them using it because it's outside and it was freezing out and would take way too long to heat up to proper temp + I don't think they wanted to pay the fee to use it. Sun. I spent 4hrs cleaning the Hot Tub + it works fine. They also used our blankets while outside.

Quiet, comfortable beds.

  • 4 of 5

This property is in a quiet, hilly neighborhood good for walking. The unit has comfortable beds and everything worked in the kitchen. If coming in cold weather, ask about the heating system, which is fine but a bit quirky. Nice to hear roosters crowing every morning! The hosts are friendly and accommodating.

Great for a weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two nights for a wedding in Deep River, CT with our toddler and infant. Doug and Doris were very hospitable and their rental is great. It was very clean, which was very appreciated! Plenty of room for the four of us. They had a coffee maker and toaster which we put to good use, as well as a Pack n Play. They left fresh eggs in the fridge and homemade monkey bread on the counter for us. Our son absolutely loved seeing the animals; it was the highlight of his trip. The beds were comfy and the sheets were soft. There was a small grocery store down the road, Sanibel Market, that had staples and good coffee and breakfast food. We had a great stay! Thanks for being wonderful hosts, Doug and Doris!

Quirky little gem!

  • 4 of 5

A few buddies and I were just looking for a break from the city and a place drink beers and melt away in a hot tub. This place certainly did the job. It was really great meeting the cows, chickens, and the big ol' pig! Thanks for the tour Doug. The home is a duplex and the hosts live in the second half, which I wasn't aware of, but thankfully they are good people :)

Comfortable, peaceful visit

  • 4 of 5

Our family of four stayed here in mid-August while on a weekend trip to see Gillette Castle and other area attractions. We enjoyed lunch and ice cream at Two Wrasslin' Cats, and bought groceries in a town called Deep River. Also enjoyed a trip on the Connecticut River with Riverquest. The house was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes. It was great to have a dishwasher too. We enjoyed meeting the animals, hearing the roosters, and the fresh eggs in the fridge. There were plenty of towels and the closets were a good size. On the last morning we stayed I woke up early and saw a beautiful sunrise from the kitchen while having my coffee. Doug was helpful with directions and few other questions we had. Thanks to his whole family for our stay.
