Hacienda de la Mariposa - Authentic Spanish Style in Montecito
In the style of the Old Spanish Adobes of the past, this impeccable 1920's estate property is rich in history and tradition. Originally part of the Potter Estate, a renowned Santa Barbara family, the compound remains a testament to the old "Eden" of Montecito, considered one of the most beautiful areas in the country. The hacienda offers rustic elegance, old-world charm and tranquility. It is an informal, blissful oasis in the heart of Montecito, a truly unique and special home.
Entering through a private gate, the Main House is set around the central entry courtyard with fountain and offers 3 Bedrooms and 2.5 Bathrooms. The Formal Living Room, with a beamed vaulted ceiling, is a wonderful space to entertain or simply enjoy quiet conversation around the charming, Wood-Burning Fireplace. The Family Room features a Pool Table, TV, and fireplace with French Doors, which open to the Pool Terrace and Tropical Garden.
For family meals, dine around the large round glass-top table in the Formal Dining Room adjacent to the well-equipped Kitchen. The comfortable Master Bedroom has a beamed, vaulted ceiling, a king-size bed and an architectural wall of bookcases with antique Mexican corbels surrounding a flat-screen TV. French Doors open to a deck shaded by a giant pepper tree overlooking the orchard lawn. The Master Bath has a private view of the garden.
There are three detached spacious Guesthouses, which provide spacious private accommodations for our honored guests. The Pool Cottage, with 2 Bedrooms and full Kitchen, is tucked into the tropical landscape adjacent to the Pool in a quiet corner of the estate. The two Studio Cottages are accessed either from the driveway or entry courtyard and share a lovely enclosed inner patio with seating under a flowering Portico. Each sunlight-filled Guest Cottage is tastefully decorated with antiques, providing ample separate spaces for large families, reunions, corporate retreats or romantic sanctuaries.
The well-manicured and maintained grounds have been thoughtfully and professionally arranged with garden themes based on Lotusland, a beloved botanic garden nearby. The varying areas of the yard echo that of a tropical rain forest, an abundant fruit orchard, and an arid desert with succulents and drought tolerant plantings.
Off the Main House and Pool Cottage is the lush and tropical Pool Terrace with chaise lounges and seating options. Enjoy reading a book or drink margaritas as you catch some California sun, sit in the Spa or swim in the Salt Water Pool.
Dine al fresco nearly every day of the year on the porch off the Dining Room under a shaded arbor full of flowers. A barbecue adds that extra feature for the grill master of the group to create great meals while staying close to the Pool activity and Kitchen alike.
The backyard features a large, flat lawn with plenty of room for little guests to run and play. Enjoy a fun game of Badminton too! The Organic Orchard offers an abundance of seasonal fruits from pomegranate, apple, plum and peach, to a large variety of citrus, including sweet oranges and grapefruit to enjoy each morning!
The Main House and all Guest Cottages are wired for High-Speed Internet. There are wonderful workspaces throughout the property but, should you need it, there is a separate, private, well-equipped Office for your use.
This extraordinary residence is located in the prestigious "Golden Triangle" of Montecito, the most desirable part of the Village. You can hear the church bells toll from the nearby Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, a historical landmark that was founded in the late 1800's. The Hacienda is one-half mile to Butterfly Beach and the famous Biltmore Hotel, as well as a short 10-minute walk to both the Upper and Lower Villages of Montecito, where one finds gourmet restaurants, boutique shopping and upscale personal services such as spas, gyms and yoga studios. Some of the best hiking trails in the state are just up the road. The gorgeous city of Santa Barbara, nestled between the ocean and the mountains, is just minutes away. You will be close to whatever activities you choose!
The Pharmacy, Pierre Lafond or Jeannine's are fun places to gather for a delicious morning cappuccino. There's also a chance to catch a celebrity sighting! Spend time chatting with friendly locals about what to do and see in Montecito and Santa Barbara!
A stay at the Hacienda de la Mariposa will be a truly memorable experience. At the end of your visit to this unique home, our goal is to have your family and friends exclaiming, "La Vida es Bella!"... Life is Beautiful!
Note: Housekeeping is included in your stay. The Owners' Caretaker will be onsite on Mondays and Fridays and available for light housekeeping chores, and/or will attend to the estate grounds.

(Transcribed from guestbook at property) We enjoyed a lovely family weekend here at the Hacienda, celebrating graduation from Cate School.
'Meet and greet' person was not familiar with the property and provided only minimal information.
Garbage cans were full upon arrival and despite daily calls
were not emptied for 5 days, unhealthy, unappealing and aggravating.
A 4 door Suburban (a very large car), License 5DBS218, was parked in the guest parking area and occupied 2 of the 6 available parking sites. We called management and we were told they did not know who the car belonged to, nor did they have keys to move it. Wood was not provided when we moved in. The pool heater and hot tub heater did not operate for 2 days. Management was called and was ineffective in repairs.
Hand soap was available in only 1 of the 7 bathrooms on arrival and at least a minimum amount of toilet paper would have been appreciated.
Based on the rental price of the property I would have expected a more seamless occupancy experience.
On the plus side, the property was very comfortable, clean and well maintained. The kitchen was was well equipped with dishware, cooking utensils and pots and pans.
Beds and bedding was comfortable, with an adequate number of towels.
Heating was efficient and tv's worked fine.
Outdoor seating area's were sufficient and comfortable.
On balance, our family enjoyed the stay and I would recommend the property to a friend
The home was very nice and was perfect for our group. When we arrived, it was a bit disconcerting that the entry courtyard was all dirt with a fountain in the middle. It doesn't look very good, but I'm guessing the lack of landscaping is because of the drought. It was just surprising because it's definitely not shown in the online pictures. The house itself was very clean, with nice sized bedrooms and comfortable beds. We used the outside area (barbecue, pool) as well as both inside living areas. Overall, the home was very clean and welcoming.
