My family and I have lived on the property for over 30 years. My dad is a retired firefighter, my husband works at the local newspaper and I work at a non-profit community center. Our family also includes our two teenagers, 2 dogs, and tortoise. When we are not working, you can find us at Sandy Beach where we enjoy bodysurfing, picking shells, and playing with our pets. We also enjoy hula, hiking and spending time with our friends and family.
My grand parents built the ohana cottage when I was born to accommodate their growing family. Now that everyone has grown up and moved out we share the house with visiting family and friends like you who want to experience Hawaii like a local instead of a tourist. Since Honolulu is one of the most expensive places to visit we wanted to offer budget and family friendly accommodation for malahini and kama'aina alike.
We live below the majestic Koolau mountain range. When it rains heavy here the water falls spill out and line the the entire mountain range from Kahalu'u to Likelike. The windward side is also blessed with beautiful greenery, sandy beaches, scenic drives and a much slower island pace.
TKS again for your house. Our family had a great vacation in Oahu!
The kids say HI to Roxy and Tie and Teddy of course ;-)))

Staying in the cottage was a wonderful experience. Normally a hotel room would merely be a "command post" or just a central location. The cottage was HOME, and we referred to it as home. We had everything we could possibly need for cooking, visiting the beach or just understanding the islands.
The two dogs were definitely ambassadors of aloha, the greeted us with wagging tails every evening and sat waiting for us to leav every morning.
We could not think of one negative aspect of our visit. Thank you for making our trip a wonderful experience. The central location of the cottage made it easy to get to any part of the island quickly.
After a family trip from Disneyland, San Francisco and on our way home to Sydney, we stopped over Hawaii for a 6 night breather before heading back. We had arrived at Ahuimanu Cottage at 11:30pm, our kids were all asleep and exhausted. We were nervous about the walk up and flight of stairs that were written in other reviews and had my husband go up first to see if it was manageable for our kids (8, 10, 3 & 1yr olds). To our joy, it was NOT bad at all and a little exaggerated. There were lights to guide us up from the side with sensor lights to take us up. We were greeted by the husband who was so friendly and helpful. He offered straight away to take our bags up and took us up to our little cottage. Once we walked in we felt right at home and exactly what we needed after our big trip. The two bedroom cottage was so clean, simple, well stocked with all you need, the wi-fi was a brilliant touch to the cottage, it had a blow up mattress for our boys, the kitchen had all we needed and was so quiet with the best breeze coming through the louvres. There was a washing machine and dryer at the back which was perfect for our huge load of washings we arrived with.
There are two very friendly dogs who we asked Valzey to keep away from the kids when we arrived so the kids don't get startled and in the morning our kids absolutely adored the most well mannered and friendliest dogs, Roxy & Tai. And of course our kids also loved Teddy the tortoise.
The only thing that we found that may help with future guests with small kids is that the electrical sockets were too open for our crawling toddler. We had to have chairs and the lounge pushed to block it from them wanting to play with it. Maybe have it covered up from the kids or the TV unit pushed to have it out of sight
Apart from that, we were out all day at the beach and we used the boogie boards, beach chairs and towels provided which made it so easy for our trip. We used the esky and bags to fill up the kids snacks for our day trips and always great coming to the little cottage late at night jumping onto a comfy bed and quiet environment.
We would recommend this place for any families wanting to save while enjoying the real Hawaii.
Thank you so much Valzey and Loa for reminding us to get back to basics and enjoy the simple living of life. We fully enjoyed our stay! Mahalo
Me and my family stayed here while on our vacation, and we loved it!! The couple are super friendly, helpful and are just really great people. Their two dogs and their turtle Teddy are great to have around. Whenever you come out your door, there is always a friendly face and wagging tail to greet you. We had our baby and toddler along with us, and this was a great place to stay with kids. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking to experience local life in Oahu, and who loves animals!
Stayed here for for our wedding. It was a very nice place once you walk up the hill.and steps. As soon as you get in to the cottage you will feel at home and comfortable. If you dont mind walking up some steps this place is great for the price.
Clean, comfortable 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage located in the backyard of a house on Ahuimanu Rd. Good space for the per night price. Flat screen TV's in each bedroom and in the LR with lots of good cable channels. Internet worked well. King bedroom and double bed. Decently stocked kitchen (only needed a paring knife, dishcloths, spatula, covered baking dish) and good drinking water. Lots of linens and beach towels provided, and even 2 folding chairs for the beach were provided when we asked for some. The owners were very pleasant and allowed us a late arrival and late departure to catch a late flight. There is an A/C in the King bedroom and none in the double bedroom, but we didn't find we needed it with all the good breezes coming in the windows up the hill. If you get up in the night due to sleep trouble, you will get used to the roosters crowing between 4-5 am!! We noticed lots of free-range wild chickens all over Oahu.
As the description identifies, the house is located up a steep driveway and there are lots of steps up to the cottage, so it may be difficult for people with mobility problems and heavy luggage, especially in wet conditions. We often arrived back at the cottage after dark and there were good motion detector lights coming up to the cottage, but we noticed that the motion detectors were delayed when we walked down in the dark and it was quite tricky in the rain (as it did a fair bit) until they engaged. It would be helpful if there was a motion detector to light up the stairs earlier coming down. We did find the dining area quite dark and our recommendation is to have a light over the dining table. The parking pad is more grass than gravel and is located off the steep driveway at the base of the hill, so you park sideways and have to be careful backing out onto Ahuimanu Rd with traffic around a blind corner. We tried both ways - driving in to back out, and backing in to drive out. Both are tricky. We had a van so there was very little room on each side to step out of vehicle. There was very little room to open car doors. It may be better with a smaller car.
The 2 dogs were gentle and rarely barked, which was ideal. We even got to see the elusive Teddy the turtle on the last day of our stay! There is definitely more rain on the east side of Oahu than the west, but it never stopped us from doing anything and it was usually brief and temperatures were still warm. We were there Nov 11-17, 2015.
We greatly enjoyed our stay at the wonderful Ahuimanu Cottage! Everything that we needed was already provided, and the fans keep the house comfortable (we never had to use the A/C in the master bedroom). It is located in a beautiful setting, and every morning we loved checking out the tops of the Koolaus to see if there were clouds up there.
Its central location makes exploring the island easy-- just a short trip over the pali to go into Honolulu, and the windward side beaches are just a short drive away. Kaneohe may not be as well known as Kailua, but it is just as nice.
We never saw the tortoise, but the dogs Thai and Roxy are super sweet and so good with people. We were missing our own dogs, and they allowed us to pet and love on them as a substitute.
My biggest concern before arriving was the parking situation and the steep driveway, but it turned out to be no problem. After the first time I got accustomed to parking the car, and the stairs were never a problem for us. And the trade-off is the cottage is a bit higher so it can catch the trade winds easier.
I would definitely recommend staying at this clean and comfortable cottage-- we greatly enjoyed staying here!
