Massillon House Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, 8 Sleeps

Welcome to the "Russel House". .If you are looking for a grand and majestic Victorian, then this home, known as the'Russell House', will speak to you.As you enter through the vestibule, you will note the hand-carved staircase and fresco ceilings in the foyer. A formal parlor to your right and a grand sitting room to your left. The impressive wood paneled library offers an intimate seating area with its gas fireplace, built-in bookcases and leaded glass windows. The formal dining room with stained glass windows offers an elegance of times gone by. With both a front and rear staircase, this four bedroom, two and a half bath home gives you a glimpse of the past with its servants quarters off the main sleeping areas. You will enjoy modern conveniences such as internet, cable tv but you can also just forget about modern living and pretend you are living in 1882. The screened in porch on the side of the house or the front porch are great places to enjoy your morning coffee. The home is convenient to shopping, movies and everything you need to make your stay feel like home.

I also need to explain the heat for the home. I had guests from a warmer climate stay at the home in October. They thought it was cold for them. When I went back in after their stay they had the thermostat at 90 degrees. I want to keep this beautiful home affordable. But, high utility bills will force me to raise the prices. I put a locked cover on the thermostat and it is set at 70 degrees for a guests stay. I think that is the temperature most homes are set. If there is an elderly person etc. then of course I am going to adjust it. Again, I want everyone to enjoy this beautiful home. Watching things like this helps. Hope this made sense. The Carriage House apartment on the property will be available to rent starting July, 1 2016. The listing number is 4167177. Thank you

About James Hanna

Hi, I am Jim. I own a local business . I have one grown daughter who just graduated from The Ohio State University and got her first real job. I love old homes. My favorite movie is " Back to the Future". That says something about me. lol I love gardening and baseball and inviting people to experience this wonderful home.

**** I have to add a note here now about this web site. They have just added additional fees for you as a traveler and for me as a property owner. These fees for me are in addition to the yearly subscription fee they have already charged. To save both you and I money I would like to deal directly with you for the payment. It can be a check, money order or I can even process a credit card. Thank you, Jim

Why James Hanna chose Ohio

I wanted to open up this property to guests to experience a little bit of how it might have been in the 19th century. Most of the home is original. The woodwork, windows, brick, pocket doors and lighting are original to 1882. When you see the craftsmanship of the work and realize it was all done by hand it gives you a sense of wonder. I am constantly amazed.

The Carriage House apartment on the property will be available to rent starting July, 1 2016. The listing number is 4167177. Thank you

What makes this house unique

I think if you look at the pictures you will see what is unique about this home. It is so inviting and it just takes you back in time. I love just standing in the parlor and looking around and just imagining if the walls could talk.

Other Reviews:

1. James did a great job making us feel welcome . His house is.....awesome. No better way to experience Massillon then to be in one of the historic homes on fourth street. We hosted friends and family all week and everyone was just as excited about the house as we were. His house was beyond cool....everyone had to be taken on a tour...thank you James for making your historic home available .

2. This was a new experience for us in renting a home and our first Thanksgiving away from our own home with our family. We had such a positive experience, that we want to make it a tradition. We rented this Victorian Era home as a 2 day Thanksgiving get together for our grown children and one grandchild. The home had an enchanting feel (it was decorated for Christmas) – a perfect touch as our plans also included celebrating Christmas - for those who would not be coming back in town the following month! Since the home was not rented the day before our arrival, James allowed us to check in early on Thanksgiving morning – to get the turkey in the oven. He graciously showed us around and explained the historic significance of the spaces and rooms. Everything was just as pictured (actually, more enchanting with the elaborate Christmas decorations). As our grown children arrived, each was in awe over the home and its atmosphere and had a great time checking out all the nick knacks and furnishings! We will forever cherish the memories of the special time we had at this house!

Sister get-away

  • 5 of 5

My three sisters and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had plenty of room and the home is very comfortable and clean with everything you need. Hartville and Canton are short drives away and there are many restaurants and shopping options close by. The neighborhood is lovely to walk around and was very quiet and peaceful. I would definitely rent this home again.

Jim was very friendly and helpful in showing us around the place. Thanks for your recommendation to eat at Rockne's!

Owner's Response: Hi Thank you for the very nice review. Great to see family enjoying some time together in this fast paced world. I am very glad the home worked for you. It is like stepping back in time even if it's only for a little while. Rockne's is a great little place. All of you are very nice. Your Mom and Dad did a good job.

Where do you live?

Excellent! Wonderful owner, fantastic accommodations, and very interesting historic home.

My son got married at the Peacock Ridge Barn in North Lawrence (7 miles away), and I rented this home for him and the Groomsmen. My husband and I stayed in the Carriage House on the same property. It was wonderful! My son and the groomsmen loved sharing these last nights together, and I appreciated being a part of it.

The owner has provided all the amenities you would need. The day of the wedding, my family arrived for hair and makeup and getting dressed, and there was lots of room for the everyone. My mother is in a wheelchair, and it was no problem getting her in and out of the home.

I highly recommend this home.

Owner's Response: Hi Thank you for the nice review. Really glad everything worked out well for you. I know I only got to see you a few minutes before you left but it was nice to at least say hi. You left the home in great shape and I appreciate it. The Carriage House idea for you and your husband was really a good one. You had your own space while still being close to your son. Thank you again.

Stepping back in time

  • 5 of 5

Our family felt like we had stepped back in time while staying in this beautiful home. My husband and I brought our 3 boys to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame and staying in Jim's house was such a highlight of our trip. The home was decorated perfectly with every attention to detail included. We were all constantly roaming through the house trying to take it all in! It was like living in a museum, but we could actually sit on the furniture and touch everything! Jim was a wonderful host and he made sure we had everything we needed. We will definitely stay here again when we return someday.

A Charming Property

  • 5 of 5

The house is as exquisite as the pictures show. The tour and documentation provided give you a great understanding of the history of this beautiful home. We weren't there long enough to take full advantage of the space. The three of us enjoyed it immensely and will return next time our travel takes us to the area.

Wonderful Stay at the Russell House!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had the best experience staying at the Russell House in Massillon. All the way from California, we were able to enjoy all parts of Ohio, and then return at the end of the day to the comforts of this beautiful Victorian home (10-day visit). Not only was the house filled with all the necessities and amenities for convenient staying, but sleeping and relaxing in this large home was an experience within itself. The many rooms are spacious and nicely furnished, which added to the complete charm of this house. All members of my family loved this house...94 years of age to 23 years. Jim: the library room was our favorite room also...

The house is nestled on a brick-lined historic street that lends itself to interesting views of other homes with their own individual charm. When we arrived, we were greeted with a big welcome from the owner, Jim Hanna. He proudly gave us a tour with historical points of interest. His greeting left us with a warm and inviting welcome to share his home. The house was very cleaned, and everything works! Would we stay again and recommend others to do so -- absolutely! Five Stars earned!

Owner's Response: This family arrived at the home on a Thursday afternoon. You could tell right away they were just a friendly and fun family. They had driven all the way from California but they were still gracious and learned a little about the home and the area. I know they had to be really tired from the days trip so thank you guys. During their stay a landscaper needed to do some work so I called them to make sure it was Ok. They were gracious and said no problem. When I entered the home after their stay the home looked great. Now, this is after a 10 day stay. This tells you something about how this family. I can not thank you enough because I had someone coming in the afternoon of the day they left. If you are lucky enough to have these people want to stay at your place I would suggest you can not say yes fast enough. Thank you again guys. You truly are a wonderful family. P.S. Too bad the home doesn't have two libraries. :) Jim Hanna

A lovely and relaxing victorian home.

  • 5 of 5

The property is exquisitely maintained, and my family felt we went back in time. The accommodations are comfortable, the kitchen area well appointed and very usable. The Hanna's are very relaxed. You feel the love they have for the uniqueness of this home. We loved our stay.

Owner's Response: Hi Guys !! Thank you so much for your review. You are a wonderful family. I think it's great you all make time to get together as a family even though the kids have husbands and wives and one kid will soon have a husband. :) They take the time to get together and spend the weekend together. I was lucky enough to have them stay in The Russell House. They were wonderful to talk with and it was fun to share the history of the home with them. They left the home in excellent condition. I swear it was as nice as when I left it to them. I hope some day you come back. Good luck to all of you. Jim Hanna
