About Lois and Maurice Woods
We are a family of restorers. We love old houses and when we drove through Davenport on the way to the World's Fair in 1964, we vowed that one day we would come back and buy a mansion. Little did we know that it would be a 'Save This Old House' 40 years later! It has been a labor of love and at times we wondered if we would ever finish! Every molding has been stripped or recreated, pocket doors discovered, chandeliers tracked down in other cities, hardware sleuthed on eBay. We've taught ourselves to restore tile, recreate original stencils and we painted the vaulted 'sunset sky' ceiling lying on our backs on a 30-foot scaffold. It has all been worth it!
Lois and Maurice Woods purchased this Estate in 2006
Why Lois and Maurice Woods chose Davenport
It had always been our dream to restore a mansion on the Mississippi. The friendly open welcome of our Iowa neighbors has been warm and inviting. We feel we have come home to the Heartland. Saving this gem from destruction has been incredibly satisfying. We've met wonderful neighbors and feel as though we have given something back to our community by reviving this piece of local charm.
What makes this Estate unique
Travel back 120 years to a time when you would have arrived down at the dock by steamboat or down at the station by steam locomotive. Enjoy a trip back in time while enjoying all the amenities of the present. This is a wonderful party or family reunion house. This house is just a short walk to the Mississippi river with its restaurants and casinos or to the Palmer Chiropractic College.

Overall, the property was very good. Many of the doors we’re stuck and would not close fully, some lamps were not functional, and the kitchen needs additional equipment, such as baking pans, and an electric hand mixer.
The only really serious problem we noticed was a large spot on the dining room ceiling....... a leak somewhere..???
Anyway, thanks for the great weekend experience
Thank you for opening your house to us. We enjoyed our stay and had a wonderful weekend in your beautiful neighborhood.
A step back in time...
Husband chose this lovely home to accommodate our families for a funeral. It was full of wonder in a previous time with claw foot tubs, comfy beds and plenty of space. Great location! Great choice for groups. Lots of bathrooms and close to restaurants. Kids loved it too! Thank you!
We love guests like this! Thank you so much. This house cried out to be restored to its original grandeur and we tried to be faithful as possible to that end and still have every convenience. We hope Great Gramps would approve/
We needed a large place to house several out of town family members. This fit the bill perfectly. All eight of us had comfortable beds to sleep in, bathrooms to spare, plus tons of space downstairs to gather. The first and second floors of this mansion are beautifully restored to the Victorian era. Lois was very accommodating and we had plenty of towels, soap, etc for our stay. Although we did not have any issues with safety I just want to point out to anyone reading this review that the house is in a downtown urban area so just be sensible. Overall it was a fun, quirky place to stay.
Thank you for the lovely review. The only thing I want to make clear is that we are NOT downtown, but 7 blocks away from the River. We are in the Hamburg Historic district, which consists almost exclusively of restored Victorian homes which have been totally and lovingly renovated by their owners. Yes, the neighborhood is diverse, but in the 15 years we have been there we have never had an untoward incident.
A fabulous restored Victorian home perfect for a family 90th birthday celebration!
The owners are great to communicate with and very helpful with answering questions. The kitchen is great to cook in, there is a large wonderful grill and beds and bathrooms are top notch! Highly recommend!!!
Things did not go well. First, the smoke alarm was chirping. It was fixed later that evening. Second, water was seeping from the ceiling unto one of the beds, soaking it. They attempted to fix it, claimed they did, but the guest who was supposed to be in that room had to sleep on a couch both nights. Never could get the TV to work; there were no instructions to be found.
The owner's husband was in the hospital; they did their best, under the circumstances, to solve our issues. They offered an extra night free, but that was not possible because some in the party had to work the next day.
Thr situation took away from all the fun we had in Davenport.
Sadly we did have problems and did our best to deal with them, but due to the fact that my husband had just had surgery & we were out of state,we were unable to respond in as timely a manner as should have been done. The group was given the codes for wifi and the TV works just fine (our handyman just checked it). We expressed our embarrassment and tried to rectify the situation as best we could. We do take our obligations very seriously, and always take every precaution to make sure that things are working properly. Smoke alarms seem to have a mind of their own, and torrential rains are uncontrolable. Rest assured that these items have been dealt with
