About The Owners: We are from Oregon. We love our Ocean, but prefer more sun. After visiting Hawaii several times, we discovered how invigorated we were by the Sunny Leeward side of Oahu. The surf at Makaha Beach can be calm and fun place to play or have dangerous waves that are so interesting to watch as surfers brave the immense waves. Recently, we tried Paddle Boarding at Po'Kai Beach while turtles and dolphins played right next to the surf board. We have many hikes and bicycle rides left to do in the Makaha area. We love the Saturday Morning Market (get there early), pick up fresh vegetables, fish for dinner, and coffee for breakfast . The Waianae Area feels like old Hawaii. We hope you will enjoy Makaha Valley Plantation as much as we do! Mark and Christina, Eugene, Oregon.

Why the Owner Chose Makaha: We wanted to be 'off the beaten path'. We had spent time in a small village south of Puerto Vallarto, Mexico for a number of years, but we found that there were too many obstacles to really get to know the people and the culture. But living in Makaha, life is pretty quiet but you can still get into Honolulu within 1 hour. Ko'Olina, 20 minutes provides wonderful swimming lagoon and and world class dining. We have only owned our condo since February 2011, but we have already made many new friends at the Makaha Village Plantation. People are very open and friendly.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo:

We really enjoyed Swimming in the pool and watching the Kids play. In the evening we relax under a clear star-lit sky in the Jacuzzi. I love to Sit and Read and Watch the Peacocks, ducks, and many different birds and wildlife. We have spent many hours snorkeling off the reef at Makaha Beach and the little turtle beach at Aki Cove. Our relatives have enjoyed swimming with the dolphins at Maku

We had a great time on the island we definitely enjoy the relaxed local side. We got to do everything from swimming with the turtles to hiking trails. If you are looking for a place away from the tourists this is it.The condo was equipped with everything you need and it's just 5 minutes to the beach. Thanks Christine for sharing your home with us.....

We have come to Makaha for many years and it is just as we remember it. Thanks to Christina, the unit is maintained very well (shout out to he cleaning staff) everything you need is there. Still a lot of local wildlife, great view of the ocean which is just a short drive away. We came to relax and will return, if the unit is available we would stay again . Time flies when you are having fun.

Owner's Response: This guest has returned for a second time and we were happy to have this family. They really take advantage of the many fun things there are to do around Makaha: surf, snorkel, dive, see the turtles and dolphins (whales in the winter), hike, bike and just good old swimming and sun bathing. The beaches on the west side are sunny, warm and not too crowded and have spectacular sunsets. We have 2 kiddie pools for the little ones and 2 hot tub locations for the adults. Hope all of you who read this review will consider a fun and safe vacation at our condo at Makaha Valley Plantation. christina

Great place to stay on the sunny side of Hawaii

  • 4 of 5

This condo was just about perfect for our family of 4 (our children are adults - even better if your kids are small). The listing description pretty much says it all. It's a lovely condo and very comfortable. We immediately felt at home. This side of Hawaii gives you a very local experience - not many tourists - which we really appreciated. We loved the beach - 5 minutes by car, 30 minute walk. Mostly local people surfing and hanging out. We did some hiking and exploring but mostly relaxed on the beach. The owner gave us lots of information and there are books and a binder with more information in the condo.

The store is close, as is Sun Sushi, which we loved. The condo kitchen allowed us to cook most of our meals, so we don't know what other restaurants are like.

If you want to snorkel, you really should take a boat out of Waianai. We found the snorkeling from the beach pretty inaccessible, especially when the swell is up.

The down side of being on the out-of-way part of the island is that it takes a lot of time to get anywhere else. So it's not the best location if you want to spend a lot of time exploring the island.

Our only problems were with the heat and the noise. By afternoon, the condo is a lot warmer than it is outside so we made sure we were either at the beach or hanging out at the pool. (The bedroom did offer some refuge from the heat). By 7 (this is December), things were cooling off and we had no trouble sleeping.

Noise: This is a pretty big complex and mostly it was pretty quiet and people were very friendly. But there was one night especially when the partying went late and a TV started blaring at 4AM.

Comfortable, secure, and quiet

  • 5 of 5

The rooms were perfect for our family: one kids room with 2 single beds and one bedroom with a king bed for the parents. The condo is just the right size with all the amenities. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, and even a rice cooker. The pantry is sufficiently stocked with all the basic spices and other dry goods (pepper, garlic powder, salt, sugar, etc.). The fridge works as it should and even has an ice maker.

Being on the third floor, you can see the ocean and Makaha Beach off in the distance. We saw Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles at nearby Aki Cove and Makaha Beach. Many great beaches are easy to get to from the condo. We brought our own snorkel gear but we did take advantage of the beach chairs, sun umbrella, beach cooler and snorkel fins.

There is no air-conditioning in the condo but if you keep the windows open in all the rooms, you can get a nice breeze off the hills in the morning and evening. You need to keep the ceiling fans on otherwise it can get quite warm in the middle of the day, but we didn't spend a lot of time in the condo during the day so we didn't really notice the heat too much. Don't be alarmed if a gecko manages to get itself into the condo (we had one the bathroom). The property is gated with security so we always felt safe. The grounds are well kept and abound with peacocks, chickens, doves, and other birds. We also used the swimming pools a couple of times and they were clean and of good size.

The owner, Christina, was excellent and a wealth of information. She was attentive and responsive to our needs. Everything was arranged over e-mails and there were no surprises. I would definitely consider booking here again if I come back to Oahu (we're thinking of Maui for our next trip to Hawaii).

A great place to stay with all of the ametities!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at this condo! When it says, "Fantastic Ocean View"; it really is the truth! The pictures that are available on Home Away for this condo does not do it justice! We had enough snorkel gear, closet space, dishes & cooking wear, beach towels, dvd players & movies, a place to do laundry so we didn't have to pack too much, boogie boards, coffee maker, toaster, blender, you name it. It was a comfortable & clean place and perfect for all of our needs. We also appreciated a 3-ring binder that explained the rules of the house and surrounding beaches and restaurants to visit.

Thank you Christina & Sheryl!!!
