About the property

4 Br + Loft, 3 Baths, Sleeps 11

Lifetime memories of a special week with friends, family, and small groups or a place of solitude for a private retreat are made right here. SOLITUDE is loved by many repeat guests who bring extended family or lots of friends to share quality time together, or come alone for a time of reflection and planning. We’ve never rented thru an agency and always just rented to people we know who will take care of our lake home and appreciate it as much as we do. This is a new venture to list our SOLITUDE on the internet and we are looking for a few quality people who will love our vacation home and care for it like we do. Our guests have become our friends and extended family.

SOLITUDE is a nearly 3000 square ft. luxurious lakefront personal or business retreat, located in a large private no-wake cove with magnificent views of the sailboats of the Pelican Point Yacht Club across the cove. Situated on nearly 2 acres of wooded forest and surrounded by water on 2 sides, with 3 picnic tables scattered thru the woods. Our home has 4 bedrooms plus a semi-private loft, 2 pull-out sofas and a trundle under one of the twin beds. There are 3 floors with bedrooms and full baths on all 3 floors, so there is plenty of room to spread out and find some privacy. The main floor and bottom floor both have a king master bedroom and bath. The top floor features a room with a Queen Sleep Number bed and 2 My-Pillows! Second top floor bedroom with 2 twins and a trundle, plus a Queen bed in the loft. The main floor includes the kitchen and great room with dining area. Our family likes to all eat together and watch movies together so there is room for all of us to eat and congregate in one place. The kitchen is better stocked than our own home kitchen, with larger sized serving dishes for a big family. We’ve had both Thanksgiving and Christmas at the lake for our extended family of 10-12. The bottom floor includes a second den with another large TV, couches, La-Z-Boy and the air hockey/ping-pong table. In addition to the 2 large TV's, there are small TV's in the main floor master and the top floor queen bedroom. All have cable boxes.

Our cove is spectacular. Every one of our guests say we have found THE perfect location on this 40-mile long lake. Because we share a very large cove with a private sailboat marina (Pelican Point Yacht Club), it is a no-wake cove and all lake boat traffic is way out in the main channel. This keeps the noise of boats almost non-existent. It’s very peaceful here, hence the name SOLITUDE. The cove is safe for swimming, floating, and letting the kids take the paddleboat as far as their little legs can paddle and they’re still in the protection of the cove, inside the no-wake buoys. The sailboats are beautiful when they come and go, which isn’t very often, and it’s on the other side of the cove, far away from our dock. The cove is literally so wide that it is a huge challenge for a strong swimmer to get all the way across. Good exercise. And the water is clean, clear, and deep always, no matter what time of year. Night-time paddle-boating by moonlight and star-gazing out on the dock add romance to the cove.

Water temps are 70-degrees and above by MID-MAY thru LATE SEPTEMBER. (FYI: Ocean temps in VA Beach don't hit 70 till the end of June and that's when the jelly fish think it's warm enough to come in.) So June at the lake is warm swimming too and usually doesn't book up as fast because people expect the lake water to be colder like ocean water.

Do you like to fish? Hook 'em here at Smith Mountain Lake, named one of the top 25 bass fishing destinations in the country. Outdoors, enjoy swimming and fishing off the dock. The water is very deep by the time you get to the far end of the dock so you will need floats or life jackets to swim. Near the shore it’s only ankle deep. We have lots of floats to share and plenty of ski belts of all sizes that allow you to float and play carefree. If you have a boat or rent one, you can tie it up to our floating dock. Best of all, NO SHARKS, jellyfish, flesh-eating bacteria, or big waves year round!! Read a book in the hammock or take a nap there while you listen to water hitting the rocks on the rip rap. There is a brand new hot tub for evening romance where you can hook up your cell phone and play your tunes thru the audio system. A large screened porch for night-time reading by lamplight while you listen to the crickets. The next day, there’s nothing more peaceful than reading your Bible or favorite book, or writing in your personal journal with a cup of coffee out by the lake in the calm of the early morning. The water is as smooth as glass. An occasional fishing boat will quietly float by, hoping to catch the big one early in the day. You’ll enjoy plenty of outdoor furniture including 2 glass tables for eating meals plus 3 more rustic wooden picnic tables, a large market umbrella to shade you from the sun, and plenty of chairs. Grill burgers and steaks on a charcoal grill. Charcoal and lighter fluid provided.

Indoors, there is a full-sized air hockey table with a ping-pong table topper. On the top floor is a Soloflex workout machine. There is an extensive library of movies on DVD and VHS tape - including recent, just released titles. The closets are full of games and puzzles. Plenty of books in the bookcases. The main floor and basement both have large TV’s in the den areas with 300+ channels of Cable TV viewing provided. Master bedroom and top floor queen room have a small TV in the armoires. Hi-speed Wireless Internet and an ink-jet printer are available to you so bring your laptop. All the bedrooms have ceiling fans to keep you comfortable in the summer, plus an outlet that includes 2 USB connections. In the colder months, there are 2 fireplaces to make things cozy with Duraflame logs to burn. Of course we have central A/C and heat, too. The focal point of family life is the large dining table where we spend so much time together. Lots of memories made there - birthday cakes, favorite recipes, taking turns being the chef for a meal. Be sure you take a memorable picture of your family all breaking bread together from the loft like ours in the photo gallery. It's a great picture and I love receiving them in texts from our guests!

-We have plenty of parking space for 6 cars and a place to put your boat trailer.

-Linens provided - sheets and bath towels. Bring your own beach towels please because my towels are smaller and white.

-No smoking and no pets, and no exceptions!

-Max of 11.

Plan to create some new special memories of your own this summer.

About Debbie

We live in Richmond. Garry works in investments, Debbie is a web programmer, and we have one daughter who is an RN. We both grew up in Southwest VA and come from a family of VA Tech Hokies!!! We never knew about Smith Mountain Lake growing up and finally discovered it in the early 90's. WOW, what an awesome UNDISCOVERED PARADISE! We love the lake and it has been a great place to raise a family.

Debbie purchased this house in 1995

Why Debbie chose Smith Mountain Lake

We fell in love with Smith Mountain Lake the first time we rented a place for the week with another family and decided we wanted to buy a home of our own. We looked for 3 years, every summer with an agent, and finally found the perfect home in 1995. We were WOW’ed by the no-wake cove with all the sailboats across the cove and the lot, which is a point, so there is an extensive amount of it that is waterfront. The house was beautiful too, and so well laid out. Debbie had childhood memories of family reunion weeks at Lake Erie where each family took a bedroom; the parents took the bed and the kids slept on the floor; then each family took just one day of meals and cleanup; and one night the parents went out on a date and the grandparents entertained the grandkids. What wonderful memories!! This home was big enough to hold my whole extended family and start creating new memories!!

So we purchased our home in 1995 when our daughter was in 5th grade. It soon became obvious that this place is amazingly peaceful and relaxing, so Garry named it SOLITUDE. We have many happy memories of family and friends as our daughter grew up coming to the lake. Our extended family has a weekend together every summer. We've had Thanksgiving and Christmas here with the whole extended family. Debbie's cousins have a Bush Girls weekend every fall. Our friends have become repeat guests and have their own family traditions. You will want to come back!!

What makes this house unique

SOLITUDE is designed, furnished, and setup for a comfortable home away from home. The quality furnishings and well stocked kitchen will make your visit special. Lots to do and plenty of places to relax. You will leave here feeling rested and calm, having been on a retreat, knowing that you have been on vacation. Whether you are a budding novelist or writing a business plan, the natural environment refreshes the mind. Whether you are seeking personal or business balance in your life, this retreat is your ideal destination.

Priceless Family Memories

  • 5 of 5

Just seating here with my mom reflecting on a great trip to Solitude. I guess it's easy to throw out a word like "great" so I'll break down my reasoning. The communication with Debbie was friendly, informative, and the response time was minimal. She just has knack of putting a person at ease-some would say that is a gift. Lets get to the meat of the matter and talk about money. I thought it was a great bang for the buck! My brother in law and sister tried to give me more cash for their share because they didn't believe me about the price. Next time I'm taking the extra money and ordering pizza for everyone from La Trattoria.

Solitude has a comfortable rustic feel where it"s easy to relax. My favorite was the afternoon sun in the hammock with my cell phone turned off. My siblings enjoyed listening in their Pandora music through the Hot Tub outlet and soaking in the 100 plus degree water. I think my brothers enjoyed the Hot Tub the most after playing a competitive Air Hockey and Ping Pong tournament. We laughed and laughed watching out of shape folks panting after 5 minutes of Air Hockey! What impressed me the most about the whole weekend was that even though TV was provided, I don't recall it ever being turn on. We unintentionally went Old School and conversed with each other and caught up on all the family news. Sometimes simplicity is like a healing balm. I guess the bottom line is the queen ( my mom) gave it a big thumbs up and that's all that matters. We'll be back!

PS- On a funny note, my highly organized girlfriend was impressed with all the notes left in the binder regarding the general "what to" and "how to" of our Solitude vacation. I didn't have to call Debbie a thing which in turn help us to relax and enjoy our family time together. My girlfriend asked me if I could start putting some my collection of man clutter in a binder when we got home. Thanks Debbie, I now have one more "honey do" to add to my list!

Family Reunion at the Lake!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed many times around the lake in other homes and found this home to be the most secluded yet. If you really want left alone time, this is certainly the place. We noted right away how nice it was to have the entire cove to be a no wake zone as soon as we walked down to the dock! We did lots of swimming as well as spending time on the boat and floats. Perfect get away for all the members of our extended family! We will be back!

Thanksgiving at Solitude

  • 3 of 5

The property is beautiful with lake and mountain views. We have rented dozens of lake/ski homes over the years through realty companies. This was our first time with VRBO. It was a different experience. Pros and Cons. We always take great care of the property we rent.

The Pros: The owner provided lots of extras..towels, fully equipped kitchen, soap and toilet paper in the bathrooms etc. The Cons: So many taped notes and instructions on what not to do. We felt like we were imposing.

Nice size bedrooms. Interior needs updating. The top of the tub in the master bath is at floor level. Three foot drop to get in tub/shower with no step or handles, rather dangerous.

Beautiful decking and great hot tub.

Owner's Response: First, I want to say this renter was extremely nice to deal with and left everything very nice. I did her a favor to allow her to bring 14 instead of our usual limit of 11 because it was Thanksgiving and a special circumstance with a daughter away at college and they were meeting in the middle. But apparently our tastes were just different and she wasn’t happy while she was here. That happens, although this is a first for us. The sunken Jacuzzi tub in the master bath is 24” deep, not “3 feet”. The tub itself has 2 grab bars on it to be able to stand up from sitting, and then we have another grab bar installed on the wall beside the commode that is meant for helping you step out of the tub. You can also just sit on the floor and lift your feet out that way. There are 2 other “normal” tubs with showers in them, also, that are available if you don’t like the deep one. I do have a few index cards around in the kitchen but they are all positive. One example "Help yourself to anything in this closet. People leave things behind and if your family can use it, enjoy." (examples: bags of chips, condiments on refrig shelf, etc.) And I have an index card on my corner carousel cabinet where I keep all my spices, oils, baking soda, etc. that says "Owner's closet, but not locked up. If you need something, help yourself. Just replace anything that is low or send me a text so I will know it needs to be replaced." I don’t know why this made her feel like she was imposing. They were supposed to make her feel welcomed. Who knows? We do post a few pages of the Rental Agreement on the refrigerator, like the Hot Tub Rules, just as a reminder because you probably didn't memorize that when you signed the Rental Agreement. But those were all read and agreed to when signing the Rental Agreement. We are constantly updating as we can. Last year was a new heat pump and hot tub, a new kitchen floor, and a new commode. This year we’re painting the inside and power-washing and staining the deck, plus removing wallpaper in one bathroom. We also updated 2 bedrooms and swapped out the loft bed for a better mattress. We have the carpet cleaned twice a year. We’ve only been doing this for one full summer and half of another, so it takes time. You can’t please all the people all the time, although I try hard. I urge you to read the other 20+ 5-star reviews we have received. We have many friends who return every year because their families love it!!
