Santa Cruz has 29 miles of sand and surf and a very mild climate all year round. Driving south of Pleasure Point, you will find Manresa Beach, La Selva, Capitola Beach, Seacliff Beach (sunken cement ship), Seascape Beach, and Sunset Beach . Driving North of Pleasure Point, check out the Santa Cruz Harbor; discover Light House Field State Beach (good surfing and great place to walk dogs).
Natural Bridges State Beach, known for its tide-pooling and famous natural rock bridge, feels secluded but is easily accessible from the road. This state park is a Monarch Butterfly sanctuary for as many as 100,000 butterflies that are drawn to the mild ocean air and eucalyptus grove in the winter months.
Further north are: Wilder Ranch Beach (historic site), Davenport Beach (tiny town with a good bakery),and Four-mile Beach (known for beach parties), Scotts Creek Beach, (a favorite for beach combing ) Wadell Creek Beach, Bonny Dune Beach and Red-White-Blue.
The county is also blessed with 14 state parks, including the popular Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, accessible by steam train from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This is a trip through the redwoods and back. Check the schedule before you go. If you want more adventure: Hike, ride a bike, or zip line through the beautiful redwood forests of the Santa Cruz mountains. Henry Cowell Redwood Forest and State Park is home to a centuries old Redwood Grove that features a self-guided nature path. The park has a picnic area above the San Lorenzo River. Anglers fish for steelhead and salmon during the winter (catch and release).
Golfers claim that the nearby Pasatiempo Golf course, a Alister McKenzie design, is as good as you can get for public (semi-pro) golf. Golf Week rates it #3 in California.
If you have a loved one that is college bound, be sure to check out the UCSC Campus. Also, visit The Seymour Marine Discovery Center. It’s a part of the Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory, a research and education facility of the University of California, located about 3.5 miles from Pleasure Point Cottage. For a wonderful day adventure, drive a little further to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It’s well worth your time.
You may take your pick of up to forty-five different Santa Cruz wineries. Winemaker Wednesdays at Shadow Brook Restaurant features 2 to 4 wines from local wineries in a spectacular river front setting. Barrel Tasting & Wine Dinner is held at Bonny Doon Vineyard every Thursday where you can glimpse into the winery & cellar. Barrel tasting is followed by a hosted three-course family-style dinner paired with wines of Bonny Doon Vineyard.
There are plenty of places in Santa Cruz County to end the day with a glass of wine and a fresh plate of seafood. The pier at the Boardwalk is one favorite places to enjoy breakfast or toast the sunset. The Shadow Brook Restaurant in nearby Capitola is another of our favorite places for a special dining experience. Fragrant gardens and rustic creek-side location add much to the ambience, not to mention a quaint cable car that takes you down to the restaurant and lounge to enjoy live guitar music and happy hour.

After teaching for thirty-four years and maintaining cars, airplanes and properties for even longer, we have become 'snow birds'. Creating 'home' along the west coast has been a life long passion. This Pleasure Point Cottage is one of our favorites. It's a place we enjoy coming to for sheer relaxation: The mild climate, the fresh air, the pounding surf, fine food, long leisurely walks, and beautiful scenery.
Lorraine Heng purchased this cottage in 1979
We love the ambience, especially the fresh ocean air and natural beauty of Monterey Bay with its powerful surge of ocean waves on the beach. There is a wealth of outdoor activities here, and access to San Francisco peninsula is easy from the Santa Cruz area.
Where else in the world can you, walk out your front door and down the street a couple of blocks to go surfing, comfortably stroll so many beaches, walk the dog through the Light House Field or along the marshes, go deep sea fishing or sailing, go hiking or ride horseback through the nearby redwood forests; or go kayaking in the Elk Horn Slough? A continuing favorite is to watch the otters, birds and sea lions play in the estuary while enjoying a fine fish dinner at Moss Landing as the sun sets.
Lorraine, your place is absolutely wonderful with everything we could ever need. I really love the loft. I slept like a baby. Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate what you have done with the place. You optimized the space very well. We will truly enjoy ourselves. It will be hard to leave. Thank you so much.
We've stayed in this wonderful property several times over the past few years, each experiance improved over the previous visit. What had been a cute funky Capitola cottage has been lovingly and carefully refurbished with attention to detail and comfort. Morning coffee in the hidden garden outside the bedroom was a great way to begin the day. Downtown Capitola is an easy walk along the wonderful sea cliffs. There are always surfers at the point. The photos do not fully show the inside charm of the property but the description is accurate. Lorraine and Virgil are a pleasure to work with, helpful and very responsive. Clam chowder at the end of the Capatola pier is a great inexpensive lunch.
Fabulous location, great little cottage, we've stayed here a few times, it has everything you need, plus a lovely garden. Wonderful if you have dogs! The bathroom being between the kitchen/dining room and the bedroom/sitting room can at first feel a little weird but it's totally workable for a couple! Especially if you have dogs. I highly recommend this cottage
Short two night stay in quiet residential neighborhood. Great location for us. We had a wonderful hike with our dog at Pogonip Trail a must visit area creeks, old lodge and polo field from 1930's meadows and redwoods. Lodging was clean and adequate, would recommend this VRBO.
I am amazed at the reviews apparently some people stayed in a different place? Yes the property is clean but everything is worn. What you are actually paying for here is the location. The property is located in a beautiful surf area called the Point. This property is set up very odd. You cannot get to the kitchen without going thru the bathroom. The shower is a disaster. It's not to code and you have to step up or off a wooden step that is very slippery. The shower itself is very narrow and small. This would not be allowed by any inspector for the city IF this property was a hotel. Good for people with pets. Cannot recommend to anyone over 60 due to the dangerous condition of the bathroom shower.
The cottage is located in a great location to see Santa Cruz and Monterey. It felt like a very safe area and was very clean when we arrived. The directions to access the cottage were easy and it had everything you would need for a weekend escape. We will be back again soon.
My husband and I stayed here mid-January for a birthday getaway. He is a surfer so thought this would be the perfect location. The weather was very stormy and huge waves were rolling through so we enjoyed walking the two blocks from the cottage to the point to watch the big surf. It rained like crazy, too, so we didn't get to enjoy the big backyard as we would have liked. For the price you can't beat this cottage for it's location or amenities.
Just a note, the layout of the little cottage is as follows: front door opens onto the dining area/kitchen. A door near the dining area leads into the bathroom and the bathroom is between the dining room and the bedroom. Bedroom and sitting room are one room with a sliding glass door onto the back yard. Shower is a small stall with a step up so physically challenged people might have trouble with this.
Want to give a shout out to Paradise Point Yoga located near this property!
