If you enjoy hiking, camping and the great outdoors, the Treehouse Chalet is a wonderful vacation destination! Recently renovated with a brand new master suite, this cozy treehouse offers a relaxing home base from which to pursue all of your favorite outdoor activities. It is refined and modern yet completely unpretentious.
With 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, this is an ideal space for couples traveling together or families with children. The Treehouse Chalet is an A-frame home with a private master suite built right below the 'A' structure.
The A-frame boasts an interior of 2x6 tongue-in-groove wooden boards from front-to-back, floor to ceiling. For the steeply pitched roof that means single boards of 20 feet in length! You just have to see it to appreciate it.
Located in the A-frame is:
-- a cozy kitchen with hand crafted cabinet doors featuring handles carved from rhododendron branches collected on the property;
-- a dining counter made from pecan wood harvested from our north Florida back yard —and milled and crafted locally in Balsam, NC;
-- a full bathroom with tub;
-- a living room/seating area with futon sofa, additional seating, tables, bench toy box, flat screen TV, DVD/VCR, and cable modem with wireless router;
-- Jotul wood stove
-- two very unique, ~4-ft high skylight-style windows which cantilever open on a horizontal axis, bringing the sounds of the rushing creek, singing birds and the fresh air to you when you're inside;
-- beautiful pinewood floors;
-- a rustic wooden chandelier to illuminate it all;
-- a loft bedroom overlooking it all the chalet with bright lighting, double bed, high-quality bedding, screened window and window fan for the hotter months;.
The private-entrance master suite, eight steps below the A-frame, features:
-- a huge deck with large picnic table for outdoor meals;
-- large, screened casement windows;
-- double bed with high-quality bedding;
-- accent paneling made from pecan trees harvested from our FL home, milled locally in Balsam, NC;
-- seating area with dresser, and remote-controlled TV;
-- complete bathroom with a new tiled shower featuring shelves made from stone pulled from out of the creek on the property;
-- beautiful pinewood floors,
-- warm, pinewood ceilings
-- inset lighting
-- washer & dryer facilities
-- large closet and shelving area for clothes storage.
Doesn't it sound fantastic inside? But that's not all. You have even more to look forward to outside! We provide an outdoor grill for additional cooking options and by the creek is an outdoor fire pit where you can responsibly enjoy all the hot dogs and s’mores you can fit on a stick -- just like camping! A few fire pit implements such as skewers are provided (but if you want to cook on the campfire, please bring your own camp cookware...we don't provide that...at least not yet!!)
We are happy to share with you our homey family getaway. We hope you will make many wonderful memories at the Treehouse Chalet!
The Treehouse Chalet easily accommodates 4 guests, and can accommodate up to 6 by using the convertible living room sofa.. WE HAVE SET THE OCCUPANCY LIMIT TO SIX GUESTS. Total square feet of 'inside space' is about 950. We have provided a child's air mattress to guests before, so if you need this or a pack-and-play, let us know.
Caveat: Because a) the master suite is separated from the A-Frame frame and b) the loft bedroom is only accessible by ladder, some families with young children might prefer to look for other accommodations. Please call us if you have questions. A child's room monitor is provided for split sleeping arrangements.
The occupancy limit of 6 GUESTS is set not only because we are concerned about your perceived comfort, but because we want to limit wear and tear to the cabin and its systems. it is ***NOT OK*** to book for six guests or fewer and bring nine; We will know, and you will forfeit your security deposit. Bottom line, we reserve the right to refuse rental to parties we deem to be too large for the accommodations.

Our active family enjoys everything the great outdoors has to offer! We purchased the Treehouse Chalet as a means to build memories, year after year, in a special place which is far different than the environment we enjoy in Florida, our current home.
Our children are thrilled to go fishing, hiking, tubing, camping, swimming and sightseeing throughout Western North Carolina. There are many early mornings we leave the Treehouse for an adventure and don't get back until after sundown.
In 2012, we will be opening the cabin to renters previously unknown to us for the first time. The home is very special to us, and we are pleased to be sharing it with people who value the same things that we do and who can appreciate the special setting we are trying to create.
Our motivations for renting are not profit. We merely want to break even. Anything we clear over taxes, insurance, power, utilities, and maintenance costs will go into improvements at the Treehouse Chalet. In fact, after your visit with us, we'd love your suggestions!
Josie Summa purchased this chalet in 2006
We chose to purchase a vacation rental in this area for the climate, topography, biodiversity, geographic interest, accessibility to numerous national and state parks, and countless opportunities for outdoor recreation.
I love waking up on a June or July morning and drinking a cup of hot coffee or cocoa on the porch....while wearing a sweatshirt and jammies, and wrapped in a blanket because it's so COLD!
My husband and I greatly enjoyed our stay at the Treehouse Chalet. The house has a perfect little cabin feel and has all the amenities one would need. It is well decorated, homey and relaxing. We only cooked two nights during our stay (we are pretty lazy about cooking when on vacation) but had all of the kitchen materials we needed when doing so. The bed was very comfortable and we absolutely loved having the windows open at night to listen to the babbling of the nearby stream.
We used the house as mainly a place to rest and were off each day with our outdoor activities. The location of the home was perfect. It was close to Maggie Valley and Waynesville and not a terribly long drive to the National Park, Pisgah National Forest and the Blueridge Parkway. While you feel a bit more remote at the house when you're there, in actuality, you're not. Waynesville has a great grocery store and it's not a huge deal to go and pick up anything you might need during your day. Plus, there are a ton of places to grab a bite to eat if you're not into working during your vacations like we are.
We loved the proximity to Asheville and we spent a couple of days there as well exploring and visiting the Biltmore Mansion.
The only challenge I could see for some is the driveway and the steps up to the house. We have a 4 wheel drive Jeep and are both quite athletic so each were not a concern for us but I could see this being an issue for some. We did turn on the 4 wheel drive to get up the driveway and put rocks behind the wheels at night just to be safe. In the end, I would not recommend this house to a family with small children. It was enough to haul our stuff up and down the steps let alone doing that with kids in tow. If you have a little older children it would be best.
Overall, lovely place to stay. We would absolutely stay there again and fell in love with the area.
My husband and I and our 4 kids stayed here and really enjoyed it. It was well maintained, clean, and Josie was so helpful with answering questions and keeping us informed. The cabin stayed cool all day and night despite it being July and not having a/c. It was in a perfect location - just close enough to town to be convenient, but far enough away to feel secluded and peaceful. Josie provided us with a ton of suggestions of things to do, places to eat, hikes, etc. My husband and I enjoyed the separate master suite and I think my older kids liked having their own space as well. Would highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a unique place to stay in the beautiful NC mountains!
This place was great! It is so high up that the temperature drops 8 degrees in your last mile driving to it. Such a beautiful view! We wish we could live there - so much beautiful green forest everywhere. We stayed in June, so it was hot when we arrived, but the windows have screens, so we opened them and it quickly cooled down – no problems with that at all. It was so great waking up with the sounds of the birds and the water in the creek. So peaceful! The driveway is indeed steep, and that there're lots of steps, but none of this was a problem for us. We LOVED the A frame design and the wood walls in the rooms. This house has real personality, we loved it!
We had a great time in this cute house. You are right in the woods with a beautiful trail right behind the property. We enjoyed our long weekend with everything you need!
We are planning to come back!
The cabin was the perfect place for our family getaway, and it was just as wonderful as the description. The owners were very hands on in communicating with us and making us feel welcome. We would highly recommend the "Treehouse Chalet", and we hope to be able to return for another stay. Just as others have mentioned, the driveway is very steep and you really need 4-wheel drive in order to park closer to the entrance. There are also a lot of steep steps, so the cabin would not be good for anyone with bad hips, knees or ankles. Other than this the cabin is great!
We loved our stay -- thank you! Josie was super helpful and checked in to see how we were settled in and enjoying our stay. Also, we took our 11 month old daughter, and found the sleeping arrangements to work just fine thanks to the baby monitor provided. All in all, it was comfortable, beautiful place to stay while exploring both the Smokies and the Pisgah.
Fitness Center is Waynesville Recreation Center, $7 Adult Daily, $18 Family Daily. There is a great indoor pool area for children at the Rec Center on Vance Street. There is a marked moderate-to-strenuous hiking trail out the front door which visits both a buddhist temple abandoned during construction (such is the local folklore!!) and a secluded waterfall, We will send you a huge List of Things To Do once your reservation is confirmed so that you can plan!
