An English basement is an apartment on the lowest floor of a building, generally a townhouse or brownstone, which is partially below and partially above ground level and which has its own separate entrance from the rest of the building. English basements are often rented out separately from the main dwelling, either by a single landlord who own both portions of the building or by the tenant of the building who sub-lets the English basement. They are most common in larger, older cities like London, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
The phrase 'English Basement' is itself an Americanism. In the United Kingdom, this style of apartment is known as a 'Garden Flat.'
This recently renovated Garden Flat or English Basement is located on the lower level of a beautiful house on a safe, tree-lined, residential street in Garrett Park, Maryland. The unit has its own private entrance, lots of light, free parking, cable TV, internet, and WiFi. It’s also just an eight-minute walk to the Grosvenor-Strathmore Station on the Metro Red Line, just a few miles from the National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed Military Hospital, and a few blocks to White Flint Mall, restaurants, movie theaters, and grocery stores.
About the Area
Just over the District of Columbia's western line, Bethesda, Maryland is the most affluent suburb in the D.C. metro area. Bethesda is also home to National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed Military Medical Center (former Bethesda Naval Hospital), Lockheed Martin, and Marriott International. The area has a variety of entertainment options, including more than 180 restaurants, theaters, art galleries, farmers markets, and more.
Rockville is the fifth largest city in Maryland and the county seat of Montgomery County. The city is both a residential community and a bustling commercial and professional hub that offers year-round special events, weekly farmer's markets, and tiny shops and delis -- right next door to national retailers and restaurants. Rockville also has 58 public parks, a municipal swimming center, golf courses, and many other recreational facilities.
There are a variety of transportation options that will get you to our rental accommodations and around the Washington, D.C. area.
If you are traveling by air, Super Shuttle provides service to the area (enter 20852 as the zip code when making a reservation). If you are flying into Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), we also off airport pick-up service for a less expensive rate than the shuttle. (Please inquire about availability if you are interested in this option.) D.C.’s metro transit system is another option for air travelers, and provides transportation to the area from all three airports. The following are some of the public transit options that will bring you to the area:
Metrobus route 5A between Dulles Airport (IAD) and Washington, D.C. then Metrorail.
Metrorail routes directly from Regan National Airport (DCA)
Metrobus route B30 between Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI) and Washington, D.C. then Metrorail
Our condos and apartments are located on the Red Line, just a few blocks from the Grosvenor-Strathmore station. If you choose this accommodation option, we will greet you at the station to show you to your unit.
If you are driving to the area, we will set a time and place to meet you upon your arrival.
Reservation & Payment Information
If you’re interested in reserving one of our units, please let us know as soon as possible, as dates for 2012 are filling quickly and full rental payment is required to reserve.
To reserve one of our units, we simply need your name, address, phone number, the names of all travelers in your party, and your mode of travel, including car and/or flight information. This information is needed to set up your check-in and we will finalize all the details of your trip one week prior to your stay.
The refundable security deposit must be received at least seven days prior to check-in. Accepted payment methods include check, money order, PayPal, and VISA or MasterCard. Check or money orders should be made payable to

If you prefer to pay with a VISA or MasterCard, I will invoice you and you’ll submit your card number, expiration date, CCV, name as it appears on the card, and billing address via an online invoice system. Please add 4%.
We cannot accept payments via Western Union or Moneygram at this time.
Due to space limitations, a unit is not reserved until full payment is received. There are no cancellations, and we do not provide reimbursement for cancelled stays.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer insurance on your stay. If there’s a possibility that you will have to cancel your trip due to illness, work, or other unforeseen circumstances, you may want to consider travel insurance.
