Lakeville Cottage Rental Photos and Description

5 BR, 3 BTH + hot outdoorshowr, large kitch, 2-story LR, 3 screened porches, doc

This is the lake cottage your grandmother visited during her childhood. Charming, original 1920 features. Big remodeled kitchen (new stove/oven) and big living room for family reunions and guests. Sleeps 9 in comfort; it has often slept 20. Porch overlooks Lake Wononscopomuc -- deepest lake in Connecticut. Close to train to New York and recreation facilities, in the heart of the New England independent school world and just right for the family's May and June, end of school and graduation weekends. Adjacent to Hotchkiss School and Interlaken Inn. Great fishing, hiking (including access to Appalachian Trail), antiques, golf, tennis, fall foliage, summer theater, dance and art. Superb porch sitting. Wood stove, fire-place, and electric heaters deal with extra-cool evenings or mornings. Outdoor gas grill supplements 2 indoor ovens and stove. WiFi, TV, phone.

Note that this is NOT a good place for wild or late night parties. It is located on a quiet lake not far from neighbors who appreciate the quiet beauty of the rural area. If you want to party loudly or despoil the lake, please go elsewhere.

Cultural Activities -- Near Lakeville, CT: Within a few miles of Lakeville, CT are features that include Tanglewood, Jacobs Pillow, Tri-Arts Sharon Playhouse, Music Mountain, Norfolk Festival, Railroad Days, excellent restaurants, and lovely NW CT countryside. We are five miles from the Appalachian Trail and many other hiking options. Lake Wononscopomuc is cool and clean all summer. It drops to 180 ft within 250 yards of our shore. Kayak, canoes and a sailboat supplied.

Sports: Sports include all low speed water sports -- no water skiing. Fishing is excellent for Lake trout, bass, pickerel, perch, and catfish. Many other lakes streams and ponds in the area. The Hotchkiss School Golf course is about 300 yards away and other nearby and publicly available courses are in Sharon, Amenia and North Canaan. Tennis is available at town courts a mile away. Horse-back riding is nearby. Lots of hiking opportunities.

Old and run down property

  • 1 of 5

We found this house to be disgusting. The absentee owner who apparently lives on the other coast has someone come over and clean when she pleases and as she pleases. No one checks her work and she does the bare minimum like throwing the dirty laundry into the washing machines. She doesn't bother staying to take it out. There was soot and dust inside the house and garbage left on the premises. The bedding is old, ripped and stained. The windows lack curtains. The water would not go down in kitchen sinks. There was lack of proper cookware. There is no beach or easy water access. The place is a complete dump. I have no idea who posted the glowing five star reviews. They must be either hipsters or teens who enjoy such "rustic" accommodations.

Owner's Response: This review makes a host of charges, some of which are so outlandish as to make a response almost impossible, but here are responses one at a time: 1) Yes, the owner lives on the other coast. I call the house shortly after guests arrive and check that everything is in good shape. We have local representatives (plumber, electrician, carpenter, house cleaners, and others) who fix any problem brought to our attention. 2) The house cleaners clean the house prior to the arrival of a guests. If a guest shows up before check-in time, the house may have been dirty from the prior guest, but it will be clean before check-in time. 3) That the house cleaners simply throw dirty laundry into the washing machine and don't stay to take it out is ridiculous. This charge could only have been made by someone who arrived prior to check in. 4) The house is cleaned between guests. It being an old house, it is possible that there is some dust inside. 5) If someone shows up prior to check-in time, it is possible that a prior guest has left garbage on the premises, but that is removed by check in time. 5) Old bedding is replaced each year or more frequently if necessary. 6) Some windows do not have curtains. 7) There are a number of pots, pans, and other cooking utensils. These are replaced when they disappear. 8) There are two accesses to the water. One is down a set of stairs to a dock with an easy step and a ladder to the water. The other is a beach with stairs down to it. 9) The person who arrived August 20 did not write this review. The guests who arrived August 20, were making their third visit and have already booked for 2017.

Ultimate Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We have been with a group of 10-12 people or two years in a row and everything has been perfect. The price is reasonable, there are amenities in the house ready to use, the owner calls to make sure everything is set, and much more. I can't say enough about how great the experience has been in 2013 and 2014 and we can't wait to come back in 2015. The pictures don't even do this place justice. Thanks to Alden for some great memories!

Did NOT want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

I was very excited when I saw the listing for this property and even more excited when I saw it was available the weekend I was looking at. A group of friends and I, 10 of us in total, decided we needed a short get away and we could not have picked a better place! It was the perfect size for our group! All of us had beds to sleep in and there was plenty of seating downstairs to accommodate us all as well. The canoe come in handy and there was plenty of fishing happening off the dock! The kitchen was AWESOME! There is also 3 full baths AND an outdoor shower so that was very helpful! The owner called us the day we arrived just to make sure we made it and had everything we needed. The house was fully stocked with all the amenities. We all had the best weekend and can't wait to go back!!!! Thanks Alden for an amazing experience!!

If only life could be this sweet all the time

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful and secluded lakeside retreat! We found comfortable bedrooms, a modern kitchen and two indoor fireplaces! The lake is insanely beautiful and it's great to relax around the fire pit at night under the stars. I could not recommend this more highly. Bring the chef in your life and forget the world.

Beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

Spent the weekend with my family and our first impression of the house was very positive. The place had many rooms including other sleeping arrangements allowing all of us to sleep comfortably. The house also comes equipped with utilities for kitchen, bathroom and outdoor activities. Everything listed on the ad was there and more. It was a pleasure working with the owner and I will look forward to renting again.

Notes:
Think 1920s lake cottage with big living room (30'x35') and front porch (12'x36') overlooking the lake. Lake Wononscopomuc restricts motor boats to 10 hp or less; therefore no water skiing and no loud boats. Lake access is either via a short stair-case and dock or a longer staircase and a small beach. The lake is the deepest in CT and always cool. A woodstove in the living room and a fire-place in the kitchen can cope with weather in the 30s and 40s. Recreational activities include golf, tennis and hiking --- all within 300 yards --- and water sports. You are welcome to our kayak, Sunfish, and two canoes. The Interlaken Inn is about 300 yards away and offers a restaurant, bar and escape for adults. Groceries, clothing store, book store, movie theater, etc. are 3 miles away in Millerton, NY. Pets and children are welcome with the normal, 'You break it; you bought it!' rule.
