This is the lake cottage your grandmother visited during her childhood. Charming, original 1920 features. Big remodeled kitchen (new stove/oven) and big living room for family reunions and guests. Sleeps 9 in comfort; it has often slept 20. Porch overlooks Lake Wononscopomuc -- deepest lake in Connecticut. Close to train to New York and recreation facilities, in the heart of the New England independent school world and just right for the family's May and June, end of school and graduation weekends. Adjacent to Hotchkiss School and Interlaken Inn. Great fishing, hiking (including access to Appalachian Trail), antiques, golf, tennis, fall foliage, summer theater, dance and art. Superb porch sitting. Wood stove, fire-place, and electric heaters deal with extra-cool evenings or mornings. Outdoor gas grill supplements 2 indoor ovens and stove. WiFi, TV, phone.
Note that this is NOT a good place for wild or late night parties. It is located on a quiet lake not far from neighbors who appreciate the quiet beauty of the rural area. If you want to party loudly or despoil the lake, please go elsewhere.
Cultural Activities -- Near Lakeville, CT: Within a few miles of Lakeville, CT are features that include Tanglewood, Jacobs Pillow, Tri-Arts Sharon Playhouse, Music Mountain, Norfolk Festival, Railroad Days, excellent restaurants, and lovely NW CT countryside. We are five miles from the Appalachian Trail and many other hiking options. Lake Wononscopomuc is cool and clean all summer. It drops to 180 ft within 250 yards of our shore. Kayak, canoes and a sailboat supplied.
Sports: Sports include all low speed water sports -- no water skiing. Fishing is excellent for Lake trout, bass, pickerel, perch, and catfish. Many other lakes streams and ponds in the area. The Hotchkiss School Golf course is about 300 yards away and other nearby and publicly available courses are in Sharon, Amenia and North Canaan. Tennis is available at town courts a mile away. Horse-back riding is nearby. Lots of hiking opportunities.
I grew up in Lakeville only a few miles from this house, which my parents bought in 1958. I and my family have spent numerous summers here, swimming, fishing, sailing, canoeing, reading, cooking and eating great meals, and resting, We have brought family, friends, and colleagues here for relaxation and business retreats. Our company still meets here annually to bond, plan strategy, refresh.
Over the summer, a group of friends and I met at this house, central to travelers from NYC, Boston and Baltimore, and enjoyed a few days in heaven at the Lake House. The location is set back off of a lightly travelled street, yet a short drive to the local grocer. Ample accommodations for a larger group, we enjoyed cooking in the beautiful kitchen, sharing the long dining table, beautiful views and serenity of the place. The lake was great for splashing around in on long summer days! We wished it was cool enough to need the fireplace inside, but enjoyed the fire pit in the yard instead.
Highly recommend this place for folks interested in a quiet destination!
We found this house to be disgusting. The absentee owner who apparently lives on the other coast has someone come over and clean when she pleases and as she pleases. No one checks her work and she does the bare minimum like throwing the dirty laundry into the washing machines. She doesn't bother staying to take it out. There was soot and dust inside the house and garbage left on the premises. The bedding is old, ripped and stained. The windows lack curtains. The water would not go down in kitchen sinks. There was lack of proper cookware. There is no beach or easy water access. The place is a complete dump. I have no idea who posted the glowing five star reviews. They must be either hipsters or teens who enjoy such "rustic" accommodations.
We have been with a group of 10-12 people or two years in a row and everything has been perfect. The price is reasonable, there are amenities in the house ready to use, the owner calls to make sure everything is set, and much more. I can't say enough about how great the experience has been in 2013 and 2014 and we can't wait to come back in 2015. The pictures don't even do this place justice. Thanks to Alden for some great memories!
I was very excited when I saw the listing for this property and even more excited when I saw it was available the weekend I was looking at. A group of friends and I, 10 of us in total, decided we needed a short get away and we could not have picked a better place! It was the perfect size for our group! All of us had beds to sleep in and there was plenty of seating downstairs to accommodate us all as well. The canoe come in handy and there was plenty of fishing happening off the dock! The kitchen was AWESOME! There is also 3 full baths AND an outdoor shower so that was very helpful! The owner called us the day we arrived just to make sure we made it and had everything we needed. The house was fully stocked with all the amenities. We all had the best weekend and can't wait to go back!!!! Thanks Alden for an amazing experience!!
A wonderful and secluded lakeside retreat! We found comfortable bedrooms, a modern kitchen and two indoor fireplaces! The lake is insanely beautiful and it's great to relax around the fire pit at night under the stars. I could not recommend this more highly. Bring the chef in your life and forget the world.
Spent the weekend with my family and our first impression of the house was very positive. The place had many rooms including other sleeping arrangements allowing all of us to sleep comfortably. The house also comes equipped with utilities for kitchen, bathroom and outdoor activities. Everything listed on the ad was there and more. It was a pleasure working with the owner and I will look forward to renting again.
