ALL BRAND NEW!
The Rocky Hill Retreat has recently been reincarnated – everything has been remodeled and renewed to make it a new home, perfect for your relaxing retreat from normal life.
HEART OF THE HOME
The kitchen boasts granite counters and a friendly island, beautiful birch cupboards, and all new appliances. It’s fully stocked for cooking and eating in, when you don’t want to get out of your slippers. Enjoy the flat screen TV and DVR while you cook. The dining room table seats 10 comfortably so everyone can share their stories from the day. And,the panoramic 8 foot sliding glass door invites the view in even when you're not on the patio.
The spacious living room is the hub of entertainment and relaxation. The gas log fireplace keeps you toasty on chilly mornings and adds the glow to the evening fun. Watch the flatscreen TV or a blueray DVD, play games at the poker table, or cuddle up with a good book beside the fire.
BEDS, BATHS, & LAUNDRY
Each bedroom has its own unique flare. The master has a queen sized pine log bed and brings nature in everywhere. Enjoy your coffee on your own patio, just outside your sliding glass door, or enjoy the beautiful view while you linger in bed with your morning TV. The ensuite bathroom gives you a little sanctuary from the rest of your group. The second bedroom takes you back in time with its full sized, 100 year old bed, antique phone, and photos of my great grandparents in Spain. The third bedroom sleeps one or two with its trundle bed, and reminds you that you have more time to relax and slow down – you’re on vacation! An additional queen size, elevated Aerobed is ready for extra guests - great in front of the fireplace!
The two full bathrooms (one inside the master bedroom) each have shower, tub, new fixtures and new vanities for everyone’s needs. The new laundry room will be handy for those enjoying a longer stay.
ENJOY THE VIEW & NEIGHBORHOOD
While the inside of the Rocky Hill Retreat is beautiful, it’s the life outside that reveals true beauty. Enjoy the sunrise over the rocky hills from our comfy patio, or barbeque for the gang as the sun casts a magical glow across the meadow and lands on the hillside. Take a walk through quiet neighborhood streets with unique homes, watch the sun glisten on the grape vines, and enjoy the walking trails through the meadow. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the drought and wildfires, we request NO FLAME/no grilling until further notice. Also, be aware there is no play area for kids beyond our brick patio.)
Stroll 5-10 minutes to Main Street, and walk in the footsteps of famous Mark Twain, Ulysses S Grant, Horatio Alger and notorious Black Bart. Murphys, known as the “Queen of the Sierra” and was named “One of The Top 10 Coolest Towns in America” by Frommers. Main Street is the heart of this gold rush town - it's lined with a variety of great restaurants, unique shops, and more than 18 WINE TASTING ROOMS! Yum!
Steps away from Main Street is the community park. Like a scene from a movie, the gazebo welcomes brides and grooms or live bands, the creek rushes by to the delight of children’s toes, and the barbeque pits host good grill for parties, big and small. Town loves to host several events throughout the year, making Murphys a destination for big celebrations or any relaxing weekend escape from your every day life.
WINES and WEDDINGS are part of the fabric of Murphys! The Rocky Hill Retreat is the perfect wedding home base. The bride and her wedding party can enjoy each other and prepare for the big day with all the comforts of home. Or, make this the family headquarters, a spacious place for family and friends to gather, organize their plans, and tell stories of how the big day unfolded.
Most find all they need for a memorable getaway right here, and never get in the car until they return home. But if you’re looking for adventures, you can find everything from skiing and biking, to world-famous giant sequoias, to boating and golf, to spectacular caverns, to amazing art and horseback riding, all nearby. At 2,000 feet elevation, Murphys climate is perfect all year round – bright springs, warm summers, crisp falls, and a snow dusting or two in the winter (but never have to scoop one shovel!)
The Rocky Hill Retreat is also a great place to hold your team meeting or planning session. Groups do their best thinking when they are in an environment that promotes new perspectives. A professional consultant and facilitator will help design the right process to achieve your goals and can facilitate your meeting so everyone can participate fully. Tools to make your session successful include: flipchart, white board, pens, notepads, printer, projector and screen.
Check out our other home, the RED GATE RETREAT (VRBO #722818). It's just a 5-10 minute walk from the ROCKY HILL RETREAT. Walk to Main Street from each of them. Ask about our Dual Retreat Discount when booking both homes - a great way to accommodate up to 15 retreaters.
WE LOVE RE-TREATERS!

We're Jeff and Jackie (Alcalde) Marr. We love wine tasting (we like to practice, practice practice...!) We were married at beautiful Ironstone Winery on Grape Stomp weekend, so Murphys has a special place in our hearts. Can you believe that Jeff didn't drink wine before he met Jackie?! Now he loves to tell you about his favorite tasting rooms on Main Street.
There is nothing better than a morning walk to breakfast, wine tasting through the mid day, napping in the afternoon, and a nice dinner and play for the evening. Or, maybe just enjoy a morning Bloody Mary at the historic Hotel, play games and barbeque dinner on the patio!
Jeff's a mortgage broker, and Jackie's an organization development consultant and leadership & life coach. (That's why coaching and team planning sessions are a great fit for the Rocky Hill Retreat.) We live in Folsom and love to do mini getaways to Mendocino, Yosemite, and Tahoe. But of course, our favorite getaway is to Murphys!
It's hard to find a place where you feel totally at home (but totally away from home!) We hope you come to enjoy the Rocky Hill Retreat, stock up special memories, and make it a cherished tradition to come back again and again!
Jackie purchased this house in 2011
We've known we wanted to create a place for people to gather for relaxation, and to make great memories. We kept our eyes open for just the right place in Murphys. It had to have a view, and it had to be walking distance to Main Street. The Rocky Hill Retreat finally appeared - a little diamond in the rough until we spent three months polishing her!
Murphys was Jackie's home away from home growing up - her sister has been an integral part of the community for more than 40 years. She lives just a couple minutes walk away, and now that we have the Rocky Hill Retreat, we can have her over to OUR place!
While there are so many adventurous activities to enjoy nearby (Calaveras Big Trees, Bear Valley, New Melones Reservoir, Mercer Caverns, golfing, horseback riding, Mercer Caverns, zip lines...gosh, the list goes on and on...), we have to admit, we're pretty lazy. We enjoy hanging out in town and talking with the local shop owners and vintners. It's a wonderful community of interesting people, and we like to count ourselves among them.
For us, the best weekend includes coffee on our patio (thank goodness the coffee maker can start automatically, so we can slip out of bed onto our patio for sunrise - something we'd never do at home!), hours reading beside our gas stove/fireplace, a game and a good movie. When we need to stretch our legs, we love the short walk to Main Street for great food, fantastic wine, and good chat with our friends.
5 stars! We (me, my husband and our boys ages 6 and 4) had a blast staying at the Rocky Hill Retreat. It's a very clean, comfortable and nicely decorated home with everything you could possibly need. Beds are super comfy, neighborhood is quiet and just a short walk to Main St. We enjoyed sipping wine, taking in the view of the surrounding hills and playing one of the many games provided every evening. Such relaxed fun.
We loved exploring the nearby caverns (Mercer, California and Moaning). Such a cool adventure!! Also fun putting our feet in the creek at Myrphys park, just off Main St. Milliaire has our favorite wine, Aria is the best for amazing pastries and coffee. Took a day trip up to Big Trees, then up to beautiful Lake Alpine. There is no lack of fun things to do! We can't wait to go back. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!
We enjoyed the stay at this wonderful house. There were five of us girls for girls weekend. It had every comfort of home. It is in a neighborhood, so if you are planning a big loud party there, it probably is not the place. Children were always out playing basketball, which I thought was great to see. It is more than a few blocks (maybe 5?) to walk to the main street of town, but we talked so much, it didn't matter. There are many instructions which were a little over the top, but I totally understand. This house deserved to remain as it was when we arrived. Be sure and visit Ironstone while you are there. We enjoyed the Pour House because of the great beer/wine and park-like setting outside to sit. We also had a fabulous meal at Murphys Hotel, although a bit pricey. We were there for the Day of the Dead celebration. The park, costumes, dances and general atmosphere was fun ( I do wish they closed down the street). The walk to the cemetery was a little silly, expected them to talk about some of the people who passed, but they did not. Face-painters were everywhere though. It is a bit hard to find mixed drinks there, if that's what you like. I would love to stay in the house again though and would recommend it. Thank you Jackie for your hospitality.
The location, layout and the amenities were spot on! The house was clean and well maintained and Jackie was helpful with our arrangements and questions. We had a family wedding and all the members of the wedding party were all nearby in downtown Murphys which was a very easy walk from the house! I would stay at this location again if I ever return to Murphys!
We love our time at this home. A group of friends come up every year, and it's just perfect for us. Clean, great layout, with everything we need at our disposal. Just a short walk to town and everything Murphy's offers. Nice and quiet neighborhood away from the bustle of main street when you've had enough. Highly recommended (just not on our weekend!)
Great experience. All guests were impressed with property.
Jackie's house is great in every way. Clean, comfortable, stocked with everything you need. We had a wonderful time in Murphys tasting wines and learning about the historic town. We ended up driving to Main Street when we went but you could definitely walk. We went on a pretty warm weekend so A/C was key. Had the best time at the Pour House which is right on the corner of Main and Church (beers on tap). Played games at the house (there's lots of them to chose from) and chilled out back admiring the scenery. Fun weekend away with friends!
It was a delightful experience. The house was the hub for the bride and her bridesmaids. There was plenty of room and the kitchen is well equipped. It was quiet and peaceful also to get a good rest. I highly recommend it. Jackie is great to work with also.
