Years ago, while stationed in the small city of Bad Kreuznach, Germany on the banks of the Nahe River, Paul and Ruth Gorman discovered a passion for the Riesling wines that were crafted with care in the little vineyards surrounding the town. It was then and there that they decided to add their own vineyard to their retirement plans. While stationed in Panama, Paul and Ruth came up to Virginia to look for a property to which to retire. The property has been an apple and peach orchard in the past, as well as a sheep farm. Although the building was rather shambling, the Gormans bought it knowing that it could be restored to something beautiful.
In 1985, Paul retired from the army, and they moved to their farm in Afton, which they called Cardinal Point. Their first order of business was to install the first four acres — two acres each of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon — on what is now Cardinal Point Vineyard. While eldest son John, a graduate of UVa's architecture school, oversaw the renovation of the old farmhouse on the property, daughter Sarah and youngest son Tim tended the vines while home from school during the summers.
Tim took over as full-time Vineyard Manager in 1989, and has grown the Vineyard to 15 acres, supporting a variety of vinifera. In 2002, Paul and Ruth finally realized their dream of erecting a winery on the premises. Tim now adds wine making to his farm duties, and the rest of the family share responsibilities in the enterprise. We are proud to have Cardinal Point on the property, and we hope you will enjoy what it has to offer.
Susan Gorman purchased this farmhouse in 1982
The Afton and northern part of Nelson County is a beautiful and very special place. It is conveniently located just 25 minutes from Charlottesville and 15 minutes from both Waynesboro and Crozet. There is so much to do in our area and so many natural resources to take advantage of, that we think you will also enjoy your stay at Cardinal Point.
We generally stay with a large group of 8-10 and there is always plenty of space for everyone. The kitchen is great for cooking and hanging out and we enjoy being able to eat around the same table. The Farmhouse has a homey and charming feel that we all enjoy!
We love the convenience to all of the wineries (especially Cardinal Point) and the sunsets are unbelievable.
The home was very nice with fantastic views! The large open kitchen was a great gathering place for the 4 couples and we enjoyed some of our meals there. Extra bonus was the portable fire pit and provided wood that we used on the patio. We would definitely stay again. Only a couple of suggestions for even better experience: master bed was too firm for my husband to sleep in while all other beds were great; for large groups with football season etc would be nice for additional TV somewhere in house. Thanks again for letting us use your home!!! We loved it!
We spent the weekend with four other couples at the house on the Cardinal Point Winery property. It is the perfect place for a large group to enjoy the beautiful winery. There is plenty of space for everyone to be together -- the kitchen is the focal point -- or to find places for separate activities -- reading, playing games, etc. It is super private and the grounds are beautiful. For warm weather, there is a pool adjacent to the house. And I have to say, it has the best equipped kitchen of any house I have ever rented. Highly recommend it!
Our family stayed here for four days in October -- everyone was happy beyond description!
The Farm House has stunning mountain and vineyard views, a beautiful lawn with trees, and tons of comfortable space for the family to gather. We spent much of our time in the spacious, open-design kitchen and in the sunny side room. The rooms are large and there was plenty of space for us! The house was very clean and stocked with all of the kitchen tools we needed. An afternoon spent swinging in the hammock while hearing rustling leaves in the nearby trees -- incredibly relaxing.
Can't wait for our next family get-together here!
The home is full of warmth, memories, and special touches. The scenery is relaxing and so beautiful. Our group is already thinking about our next stay at the home. Every aspect was truly wonderful.
This was our first attempt at gathering a family of approx. 50 together in one place for a reunion and The Farmhouse at Cardinal Point served as the central gathering place! The house was wonderful...fully stocked with anything we could possibly need, whether it was items for cooking, serving, extra bedding, and two refrigerators on site! Also, the home was clean and comfortable....great floor plan for lots of 'mini' gatherings and large enough that when it rained, everyone was able to be inside at one point. The property is very spacious, allowing us to set up two 10x10' tents, bag chairs, and tables under the tents to serve the food, as well as setting up Croquet, bocce, and other games. Having a pool was a lifesaver, given the heat and the kids could have stayed in all day! The bonus is the location - minutes to breweries and we even walked down the hill to do a tasting at the Cardinal Point Winery. Finally, the owners were amazingly responsive! We would text them questions and the response was immediate and when we needed anything (because we hadn't planned for it), they drove over to help us out. We highly recommend this venue and couldn't have had a better time!
The Farmhouse at Cardinal Point is located on the property of Cardinal Point Winery. Wine tastings, occasional music events, light fare and purchases by the glass and bottle are all available. We are situated on the Nelson 151 thoroughfare, which offers access to many other wineries, breweries, a cider and distillery, not to mention several restaurants. The Wintergreen Ski Resort is under 30 minutes away and the entrance to the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a mere 10 minutes away. If hiking is your thing, you are in luck!
