About Susan Gorman
Years ago, while stationed in the small city of Bad Kreuznach, Germany on the banks of the Nahe River, Paul and Ruth Gorman discovered a passion for the Riesling wines that were crafted with care in the little vineyards surrounding the town. It was then and there that they decided to add their own vineyard to their retirement plans. While stationed in Panama, Paul and Ruth came up to Virginia to look for a property to which to retire. The property has been an apple and peach orchard in the past, as well as a sheep farm. Although the building was rather shambling, the Gormans bought it knowing that it could be restored to something beautiful. In 1985, Paul retired from the army, and they moved to their farm in Afton, which they called Cardinal Point. Their first order of business was to install the first four acres — two acres each of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon — on what is now Cardinal Point Vineyard. While eldest son John, a graduate of UVa's architecture school, oversaw the renovation of the old farmhouse on the property, daughter Sarah and youngest son Tim tended the vines while home from school during the summers. Tim took over as full-time Vineyard Manager in 1989, and has grown the Vineyard to 15 acres, supporting a variety of vinifera. In 2002, Paul and Ruth finally realized their dream of erecting a winery on the premises. Tim now adds wine making to his farm duties, and the rest of the family share responsibilities in the enterprise. We are proud to have Cardinal Point on the property, and we hope you will enjoy what it has to offer.

Why Susan Gorman chose Afton
The Afton and northern part of Nelson County is a beautiful and very special place. It is conveniently located just 25 minutes from Charlottesville and 15 minutes from both Waynesboro and Crozet. There is so much to do in our area and so many natural resources to take advantage of, that we think you will also enjoy your stay at Cardinal Point.

Wonderful Bachelorette Weekend in Wine Country
We stayed here in October for a bachelorette celebration with a group of 10 women. The location was wonderful since it was so close to other wineries and we walked down to the Cardinal Pointe Winery on our first night ( great wine and friendly staff!) We had great weather for October and the backyard was great to have dinner each night.
The only downside was a few repairs that could have been done to the house before arrival. There was a broken window in one of the rooms that let wasps in the house, but we were able to cover it up with cardboard. The downstairs toilet leaked a bit- but nothing that a few towels could not fix.
Overall, it was a great stay and we will definitely be going back to Charlottesville!
Perfect location for touring local vineyards.
Fantastic lodgings. Great hosts.
Our group of 6 adults, one infant and one dog stayed here in early September. We could have easily and comfortably fit another 4 guests.
The house was great, spacious and surrounded by fantastic views. The kitchen was incredibly well-stocked, with an assortment of pans and cooking tools and a great selection of spices and other odds and ends.
Property is in a great location, surrounded by things to do - in addition to the pool, grill and deck that made lounging at home very comfortable. Susan was a great host - ensuring we had everything we needed to make our visit an enjoyable one.
BETTER than WONDERFUL!
We recently had the pleasure of staying at Cardinal Point Farm House for a long weekend and had the most wonderful time! There were 9 ladies celebrating my daughters upcoming wedding. The house and property are beautiful with an outstanding view and good vibe. It had everything we needed. The pool was sooo relaxing with an active birdhouse that was fun to watch. We visited a few wineries in the area and truly enjoyed the time we spent Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Point Winery listening to live music while relaxing on the couches on the deck. Susan, the owner, kept in touch to ask if we needed anything. (although we really didn't because it was so wonderful) The only suggestion I would make that would make the stay easier would be to label the kitchen cabinets because there is so much to offer we spent time in an out of doors to find things. Overall one of the BEST rental experiences we have had. THANKS!
Long time friend reunion
Great place for several couples to get together. Property is beautiful! House has everything promised and more. We couldn't have asked for a better trip. We are planning on making our visit an annual get together all because of the Gorman family. Thanks so much for sharing your farmhouse.
The Farmhouse at Cardinal Point is located on the property of Cardinal Point Winery. Wine tastings, occasional music events, light fare and purchases by the glass and bottle are all available. We are situated on the Nelson 151 thoroughfare, which offers access to many other wineries, breweries, a cider and distillery, not to mention several restaurants. The Wintergreen Ski Resort is under 30 minutes away and the entrance to the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a mere 10 minutes away. If hiking is your thing, you are in luck!
