It was a pleasure to stay in Jennifer’s cottage. Most of what we felt about the property has been said in previous reviews and we would endorse them all. The cottage is homely and extremely comfortable and it became a welcome haven during a very hot and busy visit to LA. The garden’s a delight to sit in. We saw humming birds and parrots in the garden and ate the delicious tomatoes which one of our little family members (2 ½ years old) took pleasure in picking when he visited. We were also pleased that there were toys to entertain our little visitor who delighted in the building blocks. The only thing we would suggest is that visitors buy provisions before arriving as there was nothing in the cupboard when we arrived rather late and very tired. Luckily we had family close by who could help. Apart from that minor suggestion we would highly recommend the bungalow and certainly plan on staying again when we next visit LA.
This place was perfect for our family. We were 4 adults and 1 child, with another daughter who lives near by also spent everyday visiting us with her child, and we never felt crowded. There are so many places within the house and yard to hang out, though the majority was spent out in the back patio, which was huge, comfy and nice and cool even on warm days. The kids loved playing the piano, as well as I. You don't need anything here, as there is everything you could ask for. We spent most of the week at the beach, so all the beach supplies came in handy. Costco was just a block away, so very handy to get lots of our meals from there. Riding the bike there a couple of times was much easier than navigating the parking lot of a very busy Store, though my local daughter who lives there lent us her bike chariot for the week, and it can hold a lot of groceries. The beach was close, though venice beach on weekends is crowded and busy, we always went to Ocean Way beach, which isn't to far a drive. And the bike ride to the beach is perfect, no hills at all. We have rented different cottages before where we would always have to navigates hills to get to the beach, so this was nice. Venice road, just a block away, has a safe bike lane all the way to the beach, about ten minutes. The owner was very helpful and always an email away , or phone, if you needed her. We did on the first day there, contacted her, and the problem was fixed right away. There is always plenty of parking on the street, mostly always got parking right in front of the house. The cottage itself was like being in its very own little forest, and we did take advantage of a couple of fruits and vegetables in bloom. The grapefruit was the best. And the lemons too. There is a woman caretaker in the back, but it doesn't interfere with your stay and privacy. So overall, this was a great place and will come back again.
We were looking for a week's rental for a family of four (inc. 1 child and 1 toddler) and knew that a hotel wouldnt work for us. This cottage was absolutely perfect. It had 2 bedrooms so we could sleep in comfortable, an impeccably CLEAN kitchen with everything you would need to make meals, and a nice sitting area that allowed us to comfortably entertain other families. The garden was lovely and we daily had some birds visiting us. We could have used some of the veggies in the garden, but ended up not needing them. Jennifer was a gracious host, giving us tons of info and always being available to answer any of our questions. Location just great; not on the beach, but wonderful access to it. There is no designated parking for the cottage, but we always found it on the street no more than a couple of houses away. A lovely piece of paradise in Venice.
We abandoned Milwaukee this year for 3-1/2 months of the vastly superior weather of Los Angeles. What a great idea! And the French Cottage was just super for us in every way. All the comforts of home and:
- A 15-minute bike ride to Venice Beach
- Easy access to three different public bus systems (L.A. Metro, Santa Monica and Culver City)-- don't let anybody tell you that you must have a car in L.A.! Never waited more than five minutes for an Uber
- Plenty of great restaurants (I recommend Trattoria Centanni!), all within walking distance
- All the services-- car rental, liquor, grocery, hardware, Office Max, pizza, etc., and a 15-minute walk to Whole Foods' giant Venice store on Lincoln Blvd.
- The famous Santa Monica Farmers Market on Wed. and Sat. mornings, purportedly the largest organic farm mkt in the country, don't miss it, take the #3 bus for $1. The SM Pier, the 3d Street Promenade, movie theaters and all of the restaurants in that town
- Abbott Kinney Blvd for food and drink and a million boutiques, a fifteen minute walk or the wink of an eye on the 33 or 733 Metro bus (just 2-3 minutes more to Venice Beach)
The yard and deck/gazebo are loaded with areas to sit and work or read-- shady or sunny. Even the several weekends in the 80s were comfortably cool in the shady house.
Both beds are excellent, the living room furniture and the dinette are comfortable and in good repair. There is adequate closet space, one of which is chock-full of beach toys and towels, paddleball equipment, boogie boards, tire pump and so on. Oh, and there are 3-4 um, mature bikes with locks.
Excellent, strong internet; front-loading washer, stacked dryer; dishwasher, blender, coffee maker, mike, mix-master and so on; Dish TV w/DVR, Blu-Ray player; lots of board games; upright piano; adequate free, safe street parking; two-burner gas grill off the deck; citrus fruit and more in the yard-- grapefruits more delicious than any I've ever bought plus tangerines, lemons and limes and somebody has to eat them! Fresh rosemary, oregano and more. The entire garden is beautifully tended.
If we escape Wisconsin again for 2015-16, we'll contact Jennifer first of all. Even for just a couple of nights, the French Cottage would be a great place to stay.
Home away from home. Adorable house - very comfortable, bright, quiet safe neighborhood, great yard and gardens. Well decorated and appointed. Very well stocked kitchen, complete with small appliances. Easy street parking, about 1 1/2 miles from beach. Comfy beds, wood floors, clean. PERFECT!
My dog and I stayed in this lovely cottage during a heat wave and while the rest of Los Angeles baked, we were kept cool by the ocean breezes and by the shade of the amazing garden that surrounds it. Located in a very family friendly neighborhood just far enough from the beach to be serene, this house is beautifully and very comfortably decorated and the kitchen is nicely designed and stocked with every imaginable cooking tool. There are three things that are most important to me in a rental: safe neighborhood, cleanliness and a good bed, and this house could be rated 5 stars in each of these areas. The huge flat screen tv was also nice but I most enjoyed sitting outside in either the front or back garden or in the gazebo. It is also a real plus that the caretaker, Paul, lives in an apartment in the back garden and he is most friendly and helpful, but never intrudes on your privacy.
