Gilly is a garden designer and has many published books on gardens and interiors, and Dennis is a semi retired advertising man.
We have 2 small and very friendly dogs and we both speak Italian as well as having a wealth of knowledge of this beautiful and unique part of Italy. Hence we can offer advice and information easily.
We can arrange for a private chef to come and cook for you at the house, and this is charged at cost.
All linens are provided including pool towels and are professionally cleaned. All bathrooms include a hairdryer and robe for each guest.
Central heating is charged at cost during the colder winter months, but wood for the two wood burning stoves and additional fireplace is provided free of charge.
Dennis Sullivan purchased this farmhouse in 2002
We chose the house as a home rather than a rental, but after being here for 10 years, we purchased another property 10 km away which we have lived in since June 2012
The position of the house has been the most stunning and unique benefit. The hills above us are perfect for walking and enjoying the wildlife of birds, deer and many other parts of animal life.
The gardens and views from the house are magnificent yet we are only 2 minutes away from great restaurants, shops and commercial activity. In other words the best of both worlds.
The privacy of the pool area is stunning and the 'al fresco' dining areas conducive to great lunches and dinners.
The only mystery of a stay at Cinque Querce & Mezzo - discovering which were the five and a half oaks. The house Gilly & Dennis maintain up the old roman road above Celalba is spacious with an inviting country kitchen and user friendly lounge, impeccably clean & maintained, and along with the beautiful gardens & pool – a welcoming oasis after hard days enjoying hill towns and remote hermitages in Northern Umbria, eastern Tuscany and central Le Marche. My wife & I stayed all of June and were joined on & off by various family and friends - all totally delighted with the accommodations which were cleaned and remade weekly. The outdoor spaces are open to breezes perfumed by Jasmine & flowering plants, the day punctuated with the church bells, calls of peacocks & farm activities on nearby slopes. The table just outside the kitchen became a friendly gathering point with views across surrounding fields. Mornings, at the other end of the piazza, we enjoyed coffee & views across the Tiber valley to Monte Santa Maria Tiberina (visited twice, with lunches at Oscar’s at the very top). We appreciated Dennis’ suggestions, especially dinners at Il Dongione in San Guistino (excellent) and Vasco’s in Montagna (indescribable fantastic dining experience). We found prices for dining out and groceries to be bargains as compared to what we pay in the states. Also, the quality of food at local open markets and at the groceries was exceptionally high. Italians have high expectations of quality. Regional & local wines are eminently palatable and (no better way to say it) cheap by comparison to what we pay at home. June started out cool & wet then turned dry and warm. The rain storms early in the month didn’t interfere with morning sightseeing but punctuated the afternoons dramatically as the clouds and thunder moved in across the valley. Our recourse - open another bottle of Montefalco Rosso and dig into to a chunk of local aged Pecorino and an array of charcuterie – and let the storm run its course. Later in the month clear weather let us use the spacious pool and pool deck daily, lingering over the views toward the sunset late into the long days of summer. On one sunny day with breezes blowing in from the south we fired off the pizza oven for about six hours then baked pizzas until everyone cried enough. Gilly and Dennis were reachable, attentive and helpful without intruding, a perfect balance. All in all a remarkable vacation in a truly wonderful venue.
we were two families one of 4 and one of 3 that stayed here in September -October. The house was very well decorated, very tasteful and elegant, it is also very comfortable and has lovely views over the hills. The configuration of the house works well for two families as one can stay in the downstairs wing and one in the upstairs and the living area is between! We explored the countryside - we made a number of day trips and visited Gubbio, Assisi, Florence, Sienna, Anghiari - we went int San Giustino as well as Sansepulcro we also over indulged and put in large order for pottery from Deruto! The weather was a bit cool and we had rains on a few days - so we did not end up using the pool but the children ages 13, 10, 10 had a great time running in the gardens and playing - we picked figs and quinces from the trees, we went to the markets and really it was an amazing holiday - We all wish we could have stayed longer.
Dennis and Gilly have prepared a beautiful home. We travel every summer with our family of six children, and this is one of the nicest homes where we have stayed. The house is very clean, decorated stylishly, and has lovely relaxing views out over the hills, as the house is perched on the side of a hill - yet very accessible and we drive a big van. Outdoors, the garden is lovely with so much to explore. We took walks up and down the hill, visited the peacocks, had a picnic at the summit, swam in the gorgeous pool, picked apricots, watched the sunflower fields come into bloom, made a brick oven pizza, ate on the veranda... played soccer in the yard - I could go on and on. You could really entertain yourself completely without leaving the house, but as we were in a foreign country, we wanted to discover the area as well. The house is situated in a terrific area to sight-see: To the north the mountains are majestic. We visited a monastery hidden in the forest, went to car museums near Bologna, visited the Republic of San Merino that clings to the cliffs, and toured Ferrara where bicycles abound. Florence is a little over an hour's drive and is easy to navigate. We recommend hiring a docent to make the most of a visit. Assisi and Gubbio were our favorite towns. Charming! The Italians everywhere were very kind and if you have a large family, we highly recommend this area. They love children! It was a wonderful month, and we are grateful to Dennis and Gilly for the work they've done to preserve a historic home and make it so comfortable for guests.
Wonderful house, wonderful owners. Perfect pool.
My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending a week in this truly amazing home. It was, by far, the best place we stayed during our time in Italy. The house is large but maintains a feeling of comfort and character. It is beautifully decorated and projects a quality that encouraged us to begin relaxing immediately. When we were not taking advantage of the incredible location to venture out we would spend time walking the grounds enjoying the sights and smells of the garden and the orchard. We particularly liked the lavender bushes that skirt the pool area (which we used daily). Everything, inside and out, is immaculately maintained. The house is clean and orderly and the grounds are (obviously) lovingly cared for. We simply could not have asked for more from a vacation spot, but we got it anyway. The hosts are very warm and charming people. They were so helpful in providing recommendations for restaurants and places to see. They even arranged for a chef to come out to the house to cook us a private meal! Everything about this stay was perfect; a stunning view from an amazing villa in a wonderful location and with the nicest hosts you could hope for. I highly recommend a stay here! I know it was a part of our trip we will never forget!
Recently returned from a wonderful week in Umbria with our family (6 adults). We spent what seemed like the shortest and most enchanting week of our lives at Cinque Querces. We are fairly experienced travelers and were prepared to be wary, However our initial dealings via email with the owner, Dennis Sullivan were professional, thorough and very informative plus the very warm personal welcome when we arrived. In addition to being there for us,Dennis and his wife Gilly had wine, homemade bread, apricots from their garden and other goodies. it was like coming to a favorite relatives home!
The house itself is situated high on a hill with views of the Umbrian and Tuscan countryside from every window. At this time of the year there were sunflower fields as far as one could see. The landscaping on the property was done by Dennis’ wife Gilly, a professional landscape designer, who made everything look accidentally beautiful. We were located a very short distance from San Guistino, a small and delightful town that would probably be walkable for some people. For hikers , the house is right on the St Francis trail which allows you to take a short or long hike right outside your front door.
And then, there is the pool, again so beautifully designed and landscaped.. We had very hot weather the week we were there so the pool was always a welcome respite. at the end of the day.
The house itself had every amenity you would ever need and was designed with the right amount of privacy for a group of adults. Plus we were an hours drive from both large and small towns, some we knew of and some we will never forget (the small hill town of Anghiri).
What really made our stay so delightful unique was the hospitality and congeniality of Dennis and Gilly. They extended themselves in a million ways to make our stay interesting and fun ...........great restaurants, a pasta teacher, gelateria, a local man who made his own grappa! What more could we want. Molto Bene!!!!!
Cinque Querce é Mezzo is situated just a 2 minute drive (2 km) from the Tuscan border. Our nearest large town is Sansepolcro in Tuscany, the birthplace of Piero Della Francesca, the renaissance painter, and Anghiari, Monterchi and Arezzo are all within a 15 - 30 minutes drive.
In the opposite direction is Città di Castello in Umbria which is a 25 minutes drive away.
Our position gives the visitor a wonderful opportunity to compare the diverse style of architecture, food and culture of the Papal controlled Umbria and the Medici controlled Tuscany.
