Welcome to Royal Westmoreland...

Gated entrance with 24 hour security, Royal Westmoreland is a world class 5 star resort. It features a Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course, tennis courts, fitness facility and beach club. Monkeys is situated a short walk up the hill from the Clubhouse, Sanctuary fitness centre with a freeform pool and the Mullins Beach Club shuttle stop. The beach club is a 10 min shuttle ride down the hill to the sea and provides members and their guests beach towels and lounge chairs. Mullins Beach restaurant is immediately adjacent as is the Spa, where you may want to pamper yourself and your loved ones with a massage, mani/pedi or a facial.

Holetown is a 10 min taxi ride, again, down the hill to the sea but in the opposite direction.

Holetown offers shopping (haute couture, grocery and anything you may have forgotten to bring), entertainment and dining.

Welcome to Monkeys, welcome to our home...

You arrive after a 40 minute journey from the airport and are greeted by our fabulous cook/houskeeper, Esta, as she welcomes you to our home. Relax and unwind before you get to the task of unpacking. There will be a complimentary bottle of red and white wine ready for your arrival as well as 12 cold bottles of Banks in the refrigerator.

About Our Home...

When friends ask about Monkeys, we tell them it is our own, personal tropical paradise. Sited on a hill, overlooking Royal Westmoreland with views to the sea, we have 3/4 of an acre of manicured, vibrantly colourful, tropical flora. Foxtail palms swaying with the warm trade winds, multi coloured bougainvillaea abound, portulaca, lobster claw, bird of paradise, frangipani and flamboyant trees... all surround your outdoor living space.

If your timing is good, you can be there for a banana harvest before the monkeys that visit Monkeys decide they should help.

A brief tour of our indoor living space...

I say that it will be brief because you will not spend any amount of time indoors but it will familiarize you with the comforts of the home... as you enter you pass the staircase that takes you to the first floor master, known as the Princess Room, the ground floor master bedroom, called the Palm Room on your right, and to your left is the Harry Potter bedroom.

This then brings you to the principle indoor living area. Comfortably seating 14, the area is used to chill, watch TV, get a quiet corner to read a book or laze about. Turning left will take you past the twin refrigerated bar area into the large gourmet kitchen. All the modern conveniences of home that one would be accustomed to in a luxury property.

The windows and doors are open through out the day and evening (barring tropical rain storms) and allow the gentle trade winds to keep the house cool and airy.

...and now the pièce de résistance... outdoor living...

You will eat all of your meals, from sun up to sundown, on the covered terrace overlooking the gardens and the pool, with views to the sea. The day time activities will keep you pool side in full sun or shade, your choice. The evenings will find you on the back terrace enjoying a libation, playing games or just sitting around chatting with your family, friends and guests.

The back terrace has also been known to be a fabulous spot to have that mid day nap, out of the sun and heat as you either recuperate from the night before or get ready for the evening ahead.

The Beautiful Island of Barbados

Sailing, surfing, winsurfing, kite surfing, snorkelling, diving, sunset catamaran cruises, swimming with sea turtles or just plain relaxing, Barbados offers it all.

Surfing at Bathsheba on the east coast, a world class surfing destination, to swimming with the sea turtles on the west coast... high torque action to tranquil serenity, you couldn't seek more diversity or contrast.

A day at the races at the Barbados turf club is a throw back to a bygone era... jockeys riding mounts you can almost reach out and touch, while stable boys come out to pound and repair the turf in between races.

Half day cruises on a cat will give you a good sense of the west coast and a chance to swim with the sea turtles, enjoy a rum punch or two, sunbathe on the fore netting and listen to the beats of the island.

Duty free shopping in Bridgetown or at Limegrove in Holetown.

Night time entertainment at Lexy's piano bar or any host of boutique bars and restaurants on First and Second Street in Holetown, nearby 5 star dining at the Cliff, Cin Cin or Sandy Lane, all within a 5 minute car ride.

A journey to the northeast point of the island brings you to the spectacularly rugged Atlantic side of the island. A trip to Cherry Tree Hill affords stunning views of the east coast while at the same time giving you an opportunity to tour St. Nicholas Abbey, a 17th century restored plantation house.

Nearby Harrisons Caves take you on a journey into the past millennia with a tour through a crystallized limestone cavern. Watch the sun set on the west coast sitting on a beach chair listening to the sound of the gentle surf at Ju Ju's or Ramshackle Beach.

Take in the indigenous island fauna, including several troops of the green tailed monkey at the near by Barbados Wildlife Reserve (or just sit around the pool at Monkeys and wait for your own personal troop to arrive).

There is so much more but this page just highlights what is nearby...

Spectacular home, it was hard to leave.

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky enough to stay in this magnificent home for a week in July. It was the most incredible vacation spot and this home far exceeded our expectations. Not only is it immaculate inside, it also had stunning landscaping that had been carefully manicured. The private pool was just as enjoyable at night as it was during the day. Complete with a view of the ocean, it was a dream vacation.

It is always hard to say goodbye to Monkeys

  • 5 of 5

We have spent a week in February at Monkeys for three successive years, each stay a memorable one for the understated luxury of the villa, its lush gardens, the efficiency of the polite staff and the sense of well being that fills us within minutes of our arrival. The house is perfectly located for exploring all of the island, but Esta's restaurant-quality cooking, the soothing vistas down to the sea and the amenities of the Royal Westmoreland being within such easy access make Monkeys a difficult place to leave for too long. The golf course is spectacular, even for a fine morning walk - which duffers like us enjoy - and the spa facilities ,steps away from the house, beckoned us each day. We enjoy the easy access to the beach and the shops in Holetown, but always return for a cocktail by the tranquil pool at sunset before enjoying the next offering from Esta's excellent repertoire. Monkeys is the home away from home of which dreams are made.

Even better than the pictures

  • 5 of 5

We spent less than a week (!) at Monkeys, and it was the most relaxing vacation we have ever been on. We thought we would be at the beach each day and out for dinner each night, but the house and grounds are so beautiful, and Esta, the housekeeper, is such a good cook, that we wound up spending most days at home by the pool, lounging and eating! Of course, the rest of the island is great and Monkeys is in a perfect location to enjoy all Barbados has to offer.

About Ken

My first inclination was to omit this section but then I thought... why not.

My wife and I have been married for 36 years, we have three adult daughters with significant others... husbands and boyfriends, but not at the same time.

We actually began going to Barbados with the kids in the 90’s, but we always had the resort experience. Again weather was infallible, seas always warm and the sand hot. People friendly and food good. Direct flight...yada, yada.

We abandoned it as the kids grew into young adults, doing Europe, UK, Australasia, Florida, Cuba, Dominican, Mexico, Latin America, St. Lucia, cruises... Med and Carib,

ski holidays, sun holidays, eco holidays... which brings me back to Barbados.

As our eldest grew into a young woman and began university our two week sojourns in March as a family became the week after Christmas. Trouble was Dec 26-Jan 5 was cold pretty much every where within a 3 hour flight.

Enter Barbados again... Now you ask, How is this about you?

Well it is because what's most important to me is having my family around me. Barbados is that... it’s new years eve tradition to have it on the beach at Ju Ju’s. The whole family dancing in the surf and sand until 3 am.

Its a day at the races at the Garrison, so close to the horses you can touch them, Banks beer in the stands and $2 wagers to win or place... no show.

Its sunset cat cruises on a beautiful January eve as the sun sets like a rock on the horizon. Hikes on the east coast through the wild surf. Monkeys on our terrace waiting for the mango’s or bananas to ripen (they actually don’t wait). Dinners on the terrace... nights out in Holetown.

Thats who I am. A family guy with great family values and who loves having his kids near by. The point is Barbados offers you that and offers your kids that, young or old. There is lots to do and keep you interested, engaged and having fun.

Ken purchased this villa in 2009

Why Ken chose Saint James

Having traveled the world through out the years it is very difficult to finally decide where to buy that special second home where you want to spend the next half of your life.

Italy was at the top of the list. Who can resist Tuscany and a hillside villa, olive groves, sangiovese , towering cypress's and the Saturday markets... Pick any of the wine regions in France and the surrounding countryside and its hard not to want to buy a chateau with vineyard acreage.

The dilemma you faced was that you wanted to be there at the same time that you wanted to be at home in Canada. Nothing is more wonderful than late spring, summer and early fall in Caledon, Ontario where we live.

Shifting gears to contemplate winter destinations we quickly determined that you had to be far enough south, that winter weather was not an issue. If you were travelling to be warm then you had to be in the eastern Caribbean or Latin America.

Great weather and economic geo political stability don’t seem to go hand in hand. That is until we discovered Barbados.

I tell friends that the native Bajans are friendly, the island has good government (3rd oldest Parliament in the world), good infrastructure, good roads, good restaurants and hey it just happens to be a tropical island with white sandy beaches, swaying coconut palms and the warm Caribbean sea. Although its typically 80+ all year long it never seems too hot because of the trade winds. Air Canada flies there daily (direct from Toronto) all year long with two flights on Saturday and Sunday during the winter.

The rest was simple. We love our golf so we looked at the golf communities of which there are three on island. That is actually amazing for a Caribbean island. We settled on Royal Westmoreland, a Robert Trent Jones course, which is one of my favourites, not only in Barbados but globally. After 3 years of long term rentals we finally decided to make the buy decision in 2009. Even though markets were in free fall, the buy decision was easy.

What makes this villa unique

You wake up at 6am... really I do... you go downstairs for your coffee... its January, April, really doesn’t matter, you are so close to the equator the day is pretty much the same all year... the sun is up and the blue sky on the horizon meets the sea, as palms wave intermittently in the breeze and you wonder if this is all real?

This is while sitting on one of the terraces, pick one, there are 4.

Oh did I mention that you are surrounded by a tropical fauna that is breathtaking. You would think that all of this was flown in from a Disney set but its all real and its yours. Three quarters of an acre; bird of paradise, portulaca, frangipani, flamboyant, lobster claws, bougainvillea, fox tail palms, bottle palms, date palms, royal palms... I go on.

Your next decision is a) do I have breakfast b) go golfing c) go to the gym or... just sit and do nothing... I usually sit and nothing until about 7am, then its go time.

If you are ambitious you can make your own breakfast, but our best asset, Esta, comes in at 8:30 and will make you whatever it is you want for breakfast. You make better informed decisions on a full stomach.

She really is our best asset. We treat her like gold and she looks out for us like family. Great cook, chief organizer of repair men as well as of housekeeping and laundry.

I always ask my wife at the end of the season ‘Why are we going home? We don’t have to cook, clean or do laundry here.’ She just looks at me and thinks ‘ok... whatever’.

There is a serious gym and pool within a 5 min walk down the hill towards then clubhouse, all within the property. Btw there is a golf cart that comes with the property for those unable to make the 5 min walk. Tennis courts and ‘Rum Shack’ are a 10 min walk, again within the property.

The community is loaded with Brits and Canadians with the odd lonely but very happy American. The nice thing about the community is that its makeup is quite diverse, both in age and nationality. Also good local presence.
