Garage turned into spare room..no true privacy.

  • 3 of 5

I could make this very lengthy and descriptive but there's truly no desire to. If all you're looking for is a place to sleep, then here you go. There's no privacy here but if you can stand the Koki frogs/tenants noise, sleep away.

Owner's Response: I was quite surprised by Mark's review. Mark said he was from Las Vegas and looking for a place to buy and thus out daily to look at what was for sale. I have no idea what his "privacy concerns" were. While he was here, I was in Kona several days and I hardly talked with him. And certainly was not intruding on his privacy. Mark had said there was "too much noise in Kihei," and I assumed it was urban noise from which he wanted to get away. The chirping of the tiny coqui tree frogs here is loud, and if one wants desert quietness this is not the place to visit. Guests usually stay here to experience nature and a green environment. Most guests love the beauty of the surrounding coconut palms, bamboo, fruit trees, flowers, etc. Also special here are the healthy native Ohia trees that surround Jade Ohana; their lehua blossoms are celebrated in many Hawaiian chants and songs. Jade Ohana was never a garage, has many windows, is pleasantly furnished, overlooks its own garden, and is just as portrayed on my site.

Experiencing tropical paradise could not get any better.

  • 5 of 5

Although we stayed only for few days we fully enjoyed our stay. The charming house Jade Ohana was in the middle of lush greenness. We loved it. It was such a lovely place! Mary provided precise directions how to reach the place. We had our privacy. The apartment was clean, airy, full of light, with private lanai and driveway. The kitchen had two burner plates, fridge, freezer, coffee maker, mini oven, microwave and many more we did not use since we spent all days outdoors (such a TV). Mary was an excellent host. She was very caring and helpful while making sure we had all we needed. She provided us with her ideas and advice for things to do and see in the area. We enjoyed the apartment and wished we stayed longer. It was hard for us to leave this paradise. We even loved the local frogs singing in choir every night to our sleep. Be sure to bring a mosquito repellent with you though. Mary was genuine and very generous when sharing her home and products of her garden, she has been lovingly tending, with us. I tried passion fruit and guava for the first time in my life! So delicious. I do not need to mention there are many things to do and explore in the area. I can highly recommend Mary's Jade Ohana to every traveler. Wish we could go back. A big mahalo to Mary for letting us stay in her home.

Wonderful island experience

  • 5 of 5

The place worked well for us and we really enjoyed staying here. The owner, Mary, is very pleasant and attentive, and she maintains a beautiful home and yard. She provided us with helpful information about the area and various activities. The apartment consists of three downstairs rooms (kitchen/lounge, bedroom, and bathroom) of Mary's home, completely private. It is clean and had everything we needed. Due to humidity and heat, fans were provided, which kept the apartment comfortable, especially at night. The kitchen has a hot plate (no stove), fridge, and microwave, which work fine for us since we only had breakfast there. As would be expected in any home in this area, we encountered a few bugs and geckos (I had to gently remove two geckos from the apartment during our five night stay). The couqi frogs are surprisingly loud, but with the fans on, we closed the windows and slept fine. Although the property is about three miles from the main highway, it is central to everything on the southeastern part of the island. If future travel brings us back to this area, we would gladly stay here again.

Economical, convenient, and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

A stay at this property will provide a more genuine local experience to those looking for less touristy venues and the price is very affordable. It is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park which is just south of Hilo about 12 miles so it is a good location from which to explore Hilo attractions, the Hamakua Coast, Pahoa, and also Volcanoes National Park. Pahoa and Kea'au are close for food shopping and Pahoa has a great (free) public pool and other interesting sights, shops, and eateries. Visitors to this property will need to rent a car, but I would make the same recommendation to any visitor staying anywhere on the Big Island. There are several farmer's markets in the area. The owner maintains her property as a lush, beautiful, rainforest with fruit trees and flowers growing abundantly. The apartment accommodates two people with a full sized bed in a separate bedroom and a cot is available for a third in the living area if needed. The bathroom is roomy and has plenty of storage. All of the basic necessities are supplied, cable TV, wifi, dishes, utensils, cook pots and towels. There is no stove, but there is a full sized refrigerator, with freezer. There is a microwave oven and hot plate for frying or cooking. Bottled drinking water is supplied in the kitchen. Visitors can also use an outdoor charcoal cooker. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable and will assist you in finding the best swimming and snorkeling spots nearby and guide you to any other attractions you might want to see. She will make you feel most welcome without interfering with your privacy and promptly responds to any concerns you may have while staying on the property.

Rainforest Retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place to enjoy the other side of the Big Island! Mary was a wonderful host, offering lots of great suggestions for outings and snorkeling spots. The condo was comfortable and well kept and the frogs sung us to sleep each night. This hide away is definitely worth the drive to enjoy Hilo and the volcano!

Warm host, beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful spot this is! When we pulled up around 8 pm we were treated to the sounds of coqui frogs and other nocturnal callers. Mary greeted us warmly despite our late arrival and gave us a nice tour of her clean, comfortable suite. Our toddler loved picking (and eating) tangerines from her tree, and we enjoyed the peaceful, away-from-it-all surroundings. We would recommend Mary's place without hesitation to anyone who's looking for a base near Hilo to explore the east side of the island.
