Blackberry Hollow Cabin

Privacy, seclusion, and the beautiful Shenandoah River! Cabin offers a private and secluded setting which caters to nature enthusiasts, river sport fanatics, and dog lovers! This custom home boasts spacious rooms, vaulted ceilings, gourmet kitchen, veggie and herb gardens, rose gardens, private back deck, full length screened front porch and a huge fenced dog yard. Enjoy 1+ acres of adjacent private river front---take the path from the cabin to private river access. River front is beautifully manicured with picnic table, firepit, sandy entrance to the river, and no neighbors to view on either side or across the river. Put up the family sized tent (for the kids) and make sure you end the evening doing a little star gazing with a fire in the 6 ft firepit. This retreat is 1/2 mile from the end of a 'dead-end' road. This quiet road is perfect for running, cycling, walking, and is part of the Old Dominion 50 mile horse endurance ride.

Area Surroundings: River frontage is on the South Fork of the Shenandoah. Bird watching is popular here with hundreds of local bird varieties to view---including eagles which are nesting along the river. Shenandoah Outfitters are just up the road 15 minutes from the cabin where you can rent canoes, kayaks, and go tubing down the river. Also, several local hikes are just minutes from here--Indian Grave Ridge and Compton Falls approximately 2 1/2 miles from here. The area has several attractions to visit while you are enjoying your stay with us. The Shenandoah Valley features picture-postcard farms and beautiful scenery along country roads and the popular Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. If you're interested in the great outdoors, you'll love the hiking trails and horseback riding in the Blue Ridge Mountains. And don't forget the beautiful Shenandoah National Park with its portion of the Appalachian Trail. Whether your trip is action packed or more relaxed, every moment in the Shenandoah Valley is a breath of fresh air!

A wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I stayed at Blackberry Hollow Cabin for a long weekend & it was wonderful. Diana (the owner) was extremely nice & professional in all of her emails & she made sure that we knew what to bring, what was provided, etc.

The cabin sits on a nice piece of property & it had plenty of room for our dog to run around. Having 2 fenced in areas was great & it made things very easy for us when it came to taking him out, playing ball, etc. The cabin has a very homey feel to it & it's very clean & well maintained. The kitchen has everything you need to cook great meals plus there's the gas grill on the back deck. The couches & beds were comfy & there were plenty of extra pillows & blankets if you needed them. There was a nice selections of movies, books & cd's around the cabin plus the owner has a binder full of ideas of things to do around the Luray area. The front porch is awesome. We spent the mornings out there drinking coffee, reading & listening to the birds & cicadas. It was very peaceful & one of our favorite spots to relax.

We spent some time down by the river & watched groups of people canoeing by. There's a nice picnic table & fire pit & lots of open area to hang out at.

Like others including the owner suggest, it's best to get all of your supplies before getting to the cabin. It is about a 1/2 hour from town & the 9 1/2 miles of dirt road does take a little while to drive down. The road is well maintained but you do need to take it slow as there are the occasional potholes you need to avoid.

We can't wait to return for another stay & would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a great place to stay in the Luray area.

peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Blackberry Hollow Cabin. First off the cabin is one of the cleanest and nicest kept properties that we have stayed at in our travels. The property is well kept with flowers and landscaping that attracts tons of birds and wildlife. Our 2 ½ year old daughter loved all of the wildlife; we had deer walking through the yard, hummingbirds at the feeder every day, bluebirds nesting out front, tree frogs out at night in the yard to catch and lizards basking on the railroad ties in the sun. We sat out on the back deck and ate dinner in the evening and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Our golden retriever loved the trip too especially swimming in the river.

The kitchen is completely stocked with all of your needs, even sharp kitchen knives which I rarely find. Just bring a few of your essential spices that you like and you are good to go for the week. We ate at the cabin every night that we were there using the grill and even cooking over the fire pit one night.

The owner is extremely responsive; we lost power our first night there right after we finished dinner. Before I could locate the paper work to call the owner, she was calling the house to check on us and update us on the power outage in the area. There were plenty of battery powered lanterns to provide light for us along with flashlights and candles, which was nice because it is extremely dark out there without electric.

A few notes:

Verizon cell service is non-existent out at the property, which I didn’t care about since I was looking for peace and quiet. The Wifi isn’t what you might think of as high-speed but it was more than adequate for our needs when we were at the cabin and good enough that our daughter could watch some of her videos on her kindle.

The river access is a short walk down the path across the street or there is an access gate to drive down closer and park. The bank to the river was a straight 2 ½ to 3 foot drop into the water; so getting in and out with a child was a little challenging. Understand that this is subject to change based on how the river flows and erodes the bank over the year. You can take a short ride to some public access sites to get a better spot if needed.

If you want peace and quiet and a well-equipped home for your vacation this is the place. We saw maybe 5 vehicles come down the road the entire time we were there, and I can't say enough about how clean and well stocked the place was.

Private, Imaculate, Nicely Furnished, Dog Perfect

  • 5 of 5

If you travel with your dog(s) and want seclusion and privacy, this is the place. Rustic on the outside - Very clean and suprisingly well appointed on the inside. Nice deck with gated stairs to a fenced in yard for dogs (sunny in the AM). Awesome screened in porch for evenings or when the sun gets too hot. Great place to unwind. Owner is very pleasant, responds very quickly and remains in touch before, during and after your stay. I would definitely recommend to anyone seeking secluded and dog friendly accommodations. Lots of great wineries within an hour drive through some beautiful scenery. Remember to stock up on food and beverage in Luray before arriving - It's a good 20 minutes or more drive down a dead end road and once you're there, it's so nice you will probably want to unwind and not leave the property for the first few days - The kitchen has everything you could possibly need to prepare what you bring

Wonderful stay!

  • 4 of 5

A cabin on the outside and a home inside. The best of both worlds. We had rain for about 80% of our trip. The house had everything we needed to keep us all occupied. We cooked all our meals at the house and did laundry. Diana was a wonderful host and called to make sure we were doing ok. Any emails with questions I sent here were answered right away during our stay. The only downfall of the house is that it takes about 30 minutes to get back on a main road so if you have kids prepare them for that. You can avoid the "Are we there yet" billion questions. With all the rain and the dirt roads our car was a mess. But that can be fixed with a car wash. Would recommend, especially if you have pets.

A well appointed home, and perfect for dogs!

  • 5 of 5

What a delightful cabin! It is at the end of a long dirt/gravel road, which is hard packed and well maintained, and therefore not difficult to drive. It is secluded and very private, with a large dog pen in the front yard, and a smaller pen behind the house, which is accessed from the utility room, and therefore very convenient. Our medium-sized dog was also delighted with the low windows, which allowed her to see the yard at all times.

The king bed is very comfortable, and the bathroom is exceptionally nice for a rental. It has two double sinks, a shower, and a nice claw foot soaking tub. The kitchen is unbelievably well-appointed. The pots and pans are good quality. There are plenty of nice dishes, glasses, and mugs. The small appliances include a crockpot, mixer, blender, immersion blender, toaster, microwave/convection oven, coffeemaker, and others I may have missed. The electric stove is bettter than most. There are a few spices/herbs in the cabinet.... enough to to get by, for sure.

The only drawback is the distance to town. Not a problem, but you want to make sure you have everything you need before you arrive.

Would have been a 3 star if priced at $100 a nite. You have to cross Page Valley Road to get to River. When you get there, the sounds of Rt 340 are even more noticeable than at the cabin. There are cabins and trailers all over, so this place is not that secluded. The house itself has a hodge podge of furnishings and wall hangings. All interesting, but odd. ...again, $100 a nite would be the correct rate. You can only get a sense of the mountains on your drive in and out, not while you are in cabin. The landscaping is somewhat interesting. Since we did not have dogs, we could not verify the other reviews that claimed 'their dogs really loved the place".

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that your expectations were not met, but I truly believe that if you had read the information on my site -- which is very thorough and detailed -- that you could have made a lodging choice better suited to your needs.
