Train/road noise? The Westfir/Oakridge area is on the main line of a major railroad. The City of Westfir is within a "no whistle zone" so train noise is limited- however you will still hear the train, especially the heavy freight trains going uphill. We have noticed that Friday night seems to have the most trains. We are on the main road through town and there can be some traffic noise from time to time. There is currently quite a bit of thinning logging going on and log trucks on the road from time to time. We find the noise kind of soothing but if you don't, we have some earplugs in the bathroom cabinet just in case.
Is the cottage a place for guests with young children? Due to proximity to road and river guests with young children should be advised to be extra vigilant.
The house is yours to enjoy with a washing machine, fully functional kitchen, towels and linens and cozy furniture. Oakridge is a larger town a few minutes by car away, with more stores and restaurants and amenities. You will have the place to yourselves, we will be just an email or phone call away.
The Cottage is in Westfir a tiny logging town of almost 300 surrounded by beautiful National Forest. The office covered bridge- the longest covered bridge in Oregon- is located here. The north fork of the middle fork of the Willamette river is designated “Wild and Scenic” just past the bridge. The Aufderheide scenic byway starts here too.
What to do? All sorts of two wheel fun-mountain, road and motor biking. The famous Alpine mountain bike trail overlooks the cottage. Huckleberry flats OHV area has over 30 miles of trails for both motorcycles and ATVs. You can also enjoy hiking, boating, birding, hunting, fishing and kayaking.
Visit Oakridge a short 4 miles where you can have a great micro brew in the trendy uptown area. Rent a bicycle or dine on pizza, burgers and some of the best Chinese food in the state(Lee's) -and don't forget the deli at Ray's food place for something tasty to go. Take a drive to McCredie Hot Springs and Salt Creek Falls they are just up the hill on Highway 58.
Fly fishing is open year around with best fishing in May/June and September according to local and blog sources. Just internet search- North Fork of the Middle Fork of the Willamette River- for more information.

About Julie Mather
The River Cottage was the first privately owned home in Westfir built by Harry in the 1920's. Grandpa Harry was a saw filer for the Westfir Lumber Company- later purchased by Hines- He hand selected the best lumber from the mill and built most of the house himself. When we had the new windows put in the workers were amazed how square and straight the opening were. Harry and Mildred raised two children in the this small home. They were simple people who had lived through the depression and rarely threw anything away. Harry had a large garden and Mildred canned or froze the produce. Their son James was the first in the family to attend college in Eugene at the UofO. After graduation he came back to Westfir and worked as a manager for the mill eventually becoming mill manager. In 1997 my dad bought out his sister who had let the place fall into disrepair-blackberry vines actually had to be taken off the roof. He called in the best local craftsmen to repair and rejuvenate the home. Our family has been using it since then. From the time our kids were little they just loved coming up to the cottage. One of our favorite pastimes in sitting on the front porch and watching the many bikers and motor-bikers go by. It's a great spot to watch the traffic go by, drink a beverage and solve the world's problems. We live out of the area but have a great support team. You will have the cottage to yourselves. We will be only a phone call or email away. Julie

Cute and cozy cottage in a great location.
My family of five stayed at the cottage and loved it! The cottage was clean and well-appointed, with everything we needed. The location was excellent--a few minutes away from snow and hiking, a warm and comfy home base for our adventures.
Thanks! We are so happy that you and your family enjoyed your wintertime stay.
Wonderful little cottage right on the river!
Beautiful, rustic little cottage, comfortable and well appointed and well maintained. Location couldn't be better for outdoor recreation in an amazingly beautiful setting.
Great stay along the river
We were a group of 4 ladies that were attending a mountain biking event. This cottage was perfect for our group. We didn't feel crowded and slept like babies each night. Can't wait to come back. Trails are awesome in the area and sitting and relaxing along the river after a long day on the bike was heaven!
Thank you for the wonderful review! Sounds like you had a marvelous time. We are so happy you want to return and value guest feedback. Thanks again!!!
Beautiful view on the river, nice cottage perfectly maintained
A real gem!
Great cabin on the river
The cabin was as described and even more, very well equipped, very cozy, lots of maps and information. The "mud room" was very handy when coming in after fishing, and the a/c was very welcome in the heat wave. Nice to hear the river sounds from the bedroom. Great location for fishing on the North Fork - highly recommended!
Thank you so much for staying with us. Thanks for mentioning the new A/C. We want our guests to be able to relax and enjoy themselves. We love sharing our cottage and hope you can come back to soon.
