About the property

In-town, 4 BR/3.5 BTH Sleeps 10 Spacious Victorian Home - CB History!

Enjoy this beautifully renovated, roomy 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath historic home in the heart of Crested Butte.

One of the most historic homes in Crested Butte, the Superintendent’s House has been renovated to create a spacious interior while preserving its Victorian charm and character. Flooded with light, this elegantly furnished home’s features include original hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, a gas fireplace, a large dining table, an open concept kitchen/living area, and a fully equipped chef’s kitchen complete with stainless steel appliances and Viking range. Upstairs are two Master Suites, each with a full en suite bathroom. The guest bedrooms, located downstairs, include one with a bunk bed set that will sleep four (ideal for the kids) and a queen bedroom. A full bathroom and a powder room are also located downstairs.

The Superintendent’s House provides a perfect base for one or two families to experience a delightful mountain getaway!

The Superintendent’s House epitomizes Crested Butte’s Victorian heritage, as acknowledged by its inclusion on the State of Colorado’s Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1880s, the house was relocated to Maroon Avenue in 1971 from its original location on Big Mine Hill. This large wood frame dwelling served as the residence for the Superintendent of Colorado Fuel & Iron Company’s mining and coke oven operations in the Crested Butte area from 1883 until 1952. The house’s design is representative of Colorado Fuel & Iron Superintendent housing in company towns throughout the state of Colorado. Built by the company, they were the most substantial and architecturally sophisticated residences in the community.

Today, the four bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom property artfully combines historic distinction and modern refinement. The home retains the original and beautifully reclaimed oak wood flooring; its distinctive features also include crown molding, wainscoting, interior doors with transoms, and a gas fireplace. The spacious first level is comprised of a comfortable open floor plan, which is hard to find in Crested Butte. The open kitchen enjoys a breakfast nook, a six-burner Viking range and hood, a GE Profile dishwasher, a stainless steel Amana refrigerator, plentiful cabinet space, and granite counters.

Natural light pours into the living spaces on both levels of the home, yet the mature Spruce trees and southern orientation on its parcel create a sense of privacy and seclusion. Upstairs, the stunning vaulted ceilings feature skylights in each bedroom and reclaimed wood beams in the larger master suite.

Located in the town center of Crested Butte, the house is within walking distance of the town’s popular restaurants, bars, and shops. Other amenities within walking distance include Rainbow Park (1/2 block away), the recreational walking/biking path, the Upper Loop trail system, and the Slate River. The Superintendent’s House also features a landscaped yard, a classic covered front porch, a backyard paver patio perfect for summer gatherings, and a detached 1-car garage in the rear.

About Gregory Laake

I have skied CB off and on since 1996. After a 3-year run of coming up in the winter, I happened to come up over summer. SOLD! I was bitten by the Colorado bug. I worked with a great realtor, Channing Bourcher, for about a year looking for properties. I had excluded an in-town house because I wanted more of a view. Channing decided to show me "one of the most unique and historic homes" in CB. I really fell in love with the place and bought it.

My family and I live in Houston, Texas and try to get up to CB as often as possible. With two kids in college and one in high school, that is a challenge, but we manage. I actually grew up in Houston, Texas and really did not see much snow until I took a vacation at 28 years old to Colorado. Since that time I have skied Europe (Norway, Germany, Austria), Asia (Kazakhstan), Canada (Alberta and BC) and the usual suspects in the US.

Gregory Laake purchased this house in 2014

Why Gregory Laake chose Southwestern Colorado

CB is a unique ski town. It has a vibe all its own. When you are there, you start to understand that this place marches to its own drummer and has it own brand of cool - which is very, uh

Once you understand the history of CB, and the history of the Superintendents House you can really appreciate the charm of the house. It is a well loved and storied property. The house will still be there long after I am gone. It is built like a tank.

I think that the floor plan really lends itself to entertaining. And with the deep driveway and garage in back, it can accommodate a good number of vehicles.

What makes this house unique

Number one benefit is the location of this home. It is in town but far enough away from the main drag (Elk St.) that you do not get the noise. It is also situated very close to Rainbow Park and the fitness trail that goes up to Mt. Crested Butte. 2 blocks to free ski/base shuttle!!!

We loved staying at the Superintendent's House! Everything was perfect. The house was far more spacious than we expected (and far more spacious than any of the old Victorian's we stayed at in Crested Butte in the past). The rooms were all well appointed -- we didn't want for anything. Location was fantastic too! We were within two blocks of town, Rainbow Park and the ski shuttle. We would definitely stay there again! Loved it! Oh and Greg the owner was really grew to deal with too!

Owner's Response: Really happy that the house was up to billing and exceeded expectation. When a family or group can enjoy something that I enjoy so much it is very satisfying. We are new to renting and one of the unexpected benefits is to hear how excited folks get about their trip / stay. CB is a special place and this house has been here for 133 years! Its a great piece of local history and fun to own. Thanks for the great review!

Great house with character

  • 5 of 5

Overall we had a great stay - the house is a cool combination of historical and updated. It was very comfortable, easy to cook in, and had plenty of room for our group. The stereo and TV were a nice touch. A few hiccups with the management company, but everything got worked out. Would highly recommend this place for a group who needs space.

Awesome pad

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the supervisors house in Crested Butte. It is a very nice historical house that has been beautifully redone. The bedrooms were very comfortable. The kitchen was great. The living and dining space worked well. There was so much snow that we couldn't see out of some of the first floor windows! CB is a fun town. Take the bus up to the mountain - so easy and free. Both the bus stop and town are a short level walk from the house.

Place has serious heating and management problems

  • 1 of 5

1) This place has a serious heating problem. The problem is even more egregious because the owner knows about it but deliberately does not disclose it in the listing. It is disclosed in the "house information" which apparently is available online if you can find it. Simply put, when the temperatures outside are in single digits (imagine that in a ski resort(!)) the temperature in the living/dining room area (where most time is spent) will not go above 63. He gives a range of 62-67 but that's fantasy. It never got above 63. His solution to this is for the guests to huddle around the gas fire place and use the two portable heaters he provides. You will need one of them for the downstairs bedroom with the queen size bed which was in the 50s. He also has his thermostats pre-programmed to cut off at certain times. His own property manager couldn't figure it out when he finally showed up more than 2 days later. We paid premium rate for this property based on his listing representations because we had out of country guests and first time visitors to CB. They were from Finland and they even complained on the temps. That's right the Finns (!) who routinely live and work in below freezing temps. In short, we were ripped off and with the owner's full knowledge.

2) We've been renting in CB for nearly 30 yrs (winter/summer). Occasionally we've dealt with property managers on various house issues. Generally the response has been from immediate to a couple of hours at most. In this case we first attempted contact upon arrival Thursday evening to sort out a question about keys. No response. After the heating problem became apparent on Friday I again tried on Sat morning first with a text (8:00 a.m.) and then with a call around 9:00. No response until 2:30 pm that day. Apparently he was out of town and out of signal! He sent his partner over who tried to help but couldn't do much on the heating. So, first response from prop. mgr was 2 1/2 days after arrival after repeated attempts. After 30 yrs of renting in CB this is the first time I have written a review and it's only in the hope of preventing someone else getting ripped off. There were other issues with the house but there is no getting around the intentional concealment of the heating problem and the astounding lack of response from his prop. manager.

In fairness the house was "nicely appointed" but who cares when you're cold. Be guided accordingly!!

Owner's Response: As the owner, I can ASSURE (and GUARANTY) to all who rent my home that the heating system works just fine. I just spent a week with my family in early March and all was fine. I was completely blindsided by this very upsetting review! I would like to apologize to “Anonymous” for having heating issues. Since I did not directly receive any complaints during or after the stay, I must speculate that the issue was one of the guest not knowing how to operate the NEST thermostat system. If one is not familiar with the system, it can be confusing. There are clear instructions to follow and not one of my previous guests has had a problem with the system. In fact, please see the other 5-Star reviews. What is doubly confusing about this is I received a note from the renter which states among other good comments “Everyone has said the house is so great!” Imagine my surprise to see such a negative review! I did inquire with the house manager who acknowledged that this person did call and complained that the heat was not turned up enough. My house manager assured me that when they arrived to investigate, the heat was 68-70 in the house and there was nothing to “fix” other than training the guest on how to use the NEST thermostats. I work very hard to make sure all guests have a wonderful stay. The house and me, as an owner, have received fantastic reviews. If a guest would have contacted me with the issues that “Anonymous” claims in the review, I can assure you that the problem would have been remedied and an appropriate refund would have been on the way. If anything is not performing in the house it is fixed immediately. I would encourage my future guests to rent with confidence. “Anonymous” please contact me for further resolution as I want ALL my guest to feel that they have received good value for money.

Lovely house near downtown

  • 5 of 5

The house is an older home with lots of character, but has been updated with modern convenience's. It's perfect for small kids because there is a park just steps away. It's also very close to downtown and all the wonderful shops.

We love Crested Butte and would definitely recommend this house.

Great house!

  • 5 of 5

This house was in a perfect location with park right across the street and easy walk/bike to all the restaurants in town. The house was very clean and had plenty of space for two families. There is a nice patio for outdoor eating and the kitchen had excellent appliances and sufficient utensils. The owner was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property and hope to stay there again!
