Casa Ohana is a one-of-a-kind, 6,000 square-foot home perfect for family reunions and smaller family getaways. This strikingly new, curved-wall, contemporary home sits atop a 30-foot volcanic bluff overlooking the world-class surf break of Playa Negra
From the boulder-strewn circular driveway, the entry soothes you onto a blue-floored lanai, an open-air space with fantastic views, teak rockers, hammocks, chaises, and built-in lounges wrapping the curved southern wall. From the lanai you look out over a 40-foot lap pool and expansive deck to the beckoning Pacific Ocean. Waves crashing over spectacular rock clusters and lava reefs define the immediate view. The landscaping surrounding this home is equally as unique and includes many local native trees and palms and ocean loving plants and grasses.
Upon entering the house, guests step up past the soaring 30 foot glassed-in atrium into the spacious living-dining room with 10 foot ceilings where you will find built-in couches with comfy cushions and pillows, a large hand-made teak dining table and windows offering a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. This level also has a fully-equipped kitchen with hand-made cabinetry, marble countertops, sub-zero stainless refrigerator, convection oven/microwave, dishwasher and electric stovetop. From the spacious decks surrounding the living room area you’ll thrill to watch the surfers at Playa Negra, enjoy spectacular Guanacaste sunsets or dine al fresca while gazing out over the blue pool. A half bath completes this level.

We had a group of 8 friends stay at Casa Ohana and we loved every minute of it! It is even more beautiful than the pictures. Mary and the staff were wonderful and very accommodating. We would highly recommend the in house masseuses. We liked them so much we had them come back a 2nd time. We enjoyed several adventures during our stay in Costa Rica and just hanging around Casa Ohana was a definite highlight. We were surprised to find out the severity of the drought they have had in that region and how important water conservation is at Casa Ohana. They did provide drinking water but all other water use in the house had to be limited. It did not change our enjoyment of the house, but is something to be aware of. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again!
We stayed at Casa Ohana in June and it was PERFECT! We were a group of 8 (7 adults and 1 teenager). The house comfortably accommodated our group and we could have easily added another couple. Kitchen was well-equipped and we often ate in as we had a chef in our group. The common areas (inside and out) were perfect for evening gatherings and the pool was gorgeous. We all slept well in the A/C cooled bedrooms on extremely comfortable beds. The decks provided a fantastic view of surfers who entertained us all day long. There were games to play, a ping pong table, books to read (helpful guide books included), 2 washers and dryers, hammocks, plenty of comfortable outdoor and indoor furniture - no details were overlooked by the owners of Casa Ohana. The beach is beautiful with a rocky area in front of the house and a nice sandy swimming area down the beach (about a 5 minute walk).
Hotel Playa Negra is also a very short walk down the beach (maybe 200 meters) and there is a great bar/restaurant there. There are also excellent drop-in yoga classes at the hotel (MWF at 8:30 am when we were visiting).
The property manager was very helpful. We were scheduled to arrive the day after the fresh fish truck delivered, so she purchased fish for us and the fridge was stocked when we arrived. Thanks to her, we were able to see the best of the area as none of us had visited Costa Rica before. She sent us to some beautiful beaches, great restaurants and had some fantastic suggestions and tips for exploring the area. She was always available when we had questions or needed directions.
Playa Negra is a beautiful area and close enough to all we needed in the way of groceries and activities. We will do our best to return to the area and would definitely stay at the beautiful Casa Ohana again.
Casa Ohana is located one and a half hours away from Daniel Oduber International Airport. The house is within walking distance to restaurants (10-15 minutes), beaches (5-10 minutes) and great surfing. Tamarindo is only 30 minutes away, with great shopping, restaurants and night life.
Activities available in the area include zip line canopy tours, ATV tours, horseback riding, surf and stand-up paddle lessons, board rentals, sunset catamaran tours, and deep sea fishing. Farther away but worth visiting are Costa Rica's amazing national parks. Rincon de la Vieja National Park is about 2 hours away, and boasts waterfalls, hot springs, and miles of hiking trails. The cloud forest reserve at Monteverde is about 3 hours away, offering astonishing biodiversity and the largest number of orchids in the world. Lake Arenal and the active volcano Arenal are located about 3 hours away; Volcano Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with fumaroles, lava flows and almost daily explosive eruptions.
Hacienda Pinilla, located about 30 minutes from Casa Ohana, boasts a spectacular 18-hole golf course located right on the Pacific Ocean. Relax at the clubhouse after a round on the most beautiful golf course you've ever played!
