|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
A unique mountaintop residence that sleeps 5. Art-Lovers, writers, and nature-enthusiests, WELCOME! Guests are invited to enjoy a stay at a unique cottage-residence in the surroundings of Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. This was the home and studio ( art-gallery and sculpture-park) of the well-known artist and sculptor Robert E. Kuhn (1917-2000).
The artist's son, Nathan Kuhn ( the resident-manager) is a sculptor as well, and has artfully updated the church to make it a surprisingly fun and colorful get away for the young and old.
The estate's private sculpture garden is a special treat ( with a batminton yard and croquet court). The Appalachian Trail is a two mile walk from the church. And The Big Meadows Resort and restaurant ( in the park ) is also a two mile hike up the park fire-road. ( For bird-watchers : The birds are outstanding at this time of year with broad winged hawks, ravens inthe sky and warblers in every bush).
Come meditate in the sculpture gardens where gaily painted chairs and tables are available for your relaxation. History : The church was originally the All Saint's Mission Church ( and school) and was built in 1921 and active until 1964 for the few people who lived on the ridge 3000 feet above the valley.
Lastly, " There are two reasons to come to Page County - and they are both spectacular" ( said a prominent resident and member of the Chamber of Commerce). " There is the well known Luray Caverns, of course. Then, there is the least known : The Robert E. Kuhn Art Estate on Tanners Ridge".
(Hosts) Nathan and Lumen Kuhn
Nathan Kuhn, a professional Sculptor and Jazz-Musician - had been living in Shelter Island, "The Hamptons" of N.Y. with his wife, Iluminada Kuhn. In 2000, they relocated to Stanley, Virginia - .and to the former church property and private Artist- residence of his father, Robert Kuhn - in order to serve as the resident-managers of the 'Family' home (upon his passing). Nathan's skills as a Sculptor ( and builder) served well in the needed art-restorations ( and repairs ) * and his Wife's wonderful "cooking" - was well appreciated by their infrequent house-guests
( father's ART-Clients) and such celebrities as J. PETERMAN. Please note: This is the first time - that the private, family-home ( known as The REK -Art-Estate) is made "public" * by accommodate house-guests. Lastly, We believe we can offer to our visitors - a most restful and memorable vacation getaway.
OH. Welcome to "Live" JAZZ : Sunday-evenings (7-9:30) at the historic Mimslyn Inn, "Speakeasy" Bar & Restaurant (in downtown Luray). For, our Guests are able to see their Host , "Nathan" ( as a Professional Musician) - perform with his JAZZ-Trio, "The Cafe Society". (His stage-name is "Denny Toyy" and represents a handful of Jazz-HARMONICA Soloists in America, today. ENJOY a most 'special' musical-performance * offering the ONLY weekly "Jazz" outside of Wash. D.C.
Nathan Kuhn and Iluminada (Lumen) Kuhn purchased this estate in 1966
This UNIQUE property (that was once 'The All Saints Mission-Church' (1921-1964) for the mountain-settlers) was purchased by an established, Wash.D.C "Sculptor" (1964) and who then proceeded to transformed the abandoned property into a MAGNIFICENT ART-Estate : ( a Studio-Gallery * secluded (2-acre) Sculpture-Garden & Residence) over the next 35 years. Guests will be introduced to a truely FASCINATING story : The secluded life of a gifted ARTIST (surrounded by an AMAZING collection of his personal (and 'original' ) ART (from Paintings, Sculptures, and Drawings, to his own 'home-furnishing' * as tables , lamps). Indeed, (Artist) ROBERT KUHN (my Father) - dearly LOVED his gentle,"creative" life on the mountain (* as was his wishes) : to keep (and to maintain) his residence as the "family" Home). ACTIVITIES : Yes, the guest-house (property) location is OUTSTANDING ! (1) For, our Guests are surrounded by The Shenandoah National Park ( and only a short * 2 miles "hike" (up the fire-road) to the historic BIG MEADOWS Restaurant & Resort (on SKYLINE Drive) * but, to drive by car would be 45 miles). (2)Then, there are a "dozen" of neighboring "EVENTS" in the town of Luray ( a 12 mile drive) : The Luray Caverns * provides a a full day of activity
( From a tour of the historic Caverns, to the Car & Carriage, and TOY Exhibits, to the local-history museum * with a "pan-for-Gold" demonstration). (3) Then, for History-buffs, ALL the surroundings ( like the Town of New Market) is CIVIL WAR History ( and all throughout Northern Virginia). (4) Of course, the SERIOUS "hiking" (and Biking and Running events) are happening * from early April thru October. (5) Then, there is The Water-Park, the Luray ZOO, "Canoeing" on the Shenandoah river, the local Horse-riding stables. OH! a weekend CAR-RACING track, WINERY tours. In other words, OUR Property offers most EVERYTHING - for a memorable 'get-away' : So, stay at our quaint Mountain-top "church" / on a "secret" Artist-estate).
Nathan Kuhn and his two brothers and one sister believe that there is not an art property of this extraordinary breathe to be found anywhere else. What one sees and experiences HERE is the result of an Artist of profound imagination and creative talent who envisioned an "Estate" which reflected in every detail his imaginary world rendered in wood and welded-steel sculptures ranging in images from Willie Loman to Nero, a military general (on a unicycle) to little, Sailor-suit Robert Kuhn on a unicycle, and from there (and everywhere) to Lida & the Swan to Holden Caufield's (wooden) school desk to mention a mere fraction of the Artist's fascinating creative output in sculpture. Ahh, but the church and museum architecture modeled by Robert Kuhn are an high art form of his own making and the many paintings figurative and abstract which enrich the living environment (church and museum) is soothing and emotional and yet a simultaneously jolting artist's pallate of undiscovered riches which will not be found anywhere else on God's green (& watery) earth.
So, Our Guests will be welcome - to enter into (their own) : " A WORLD OF IMAGINATION (is) ... fancy-free and violently opposed to common sense."

We had a great time staying here at Nathan & Lumen's home. The converted church is great - so many artworks and things to see inside. The sculpture garden and outdoor amenities were equally lovely and fun to explore. We planned a hiking vacation and were able to get in several great AT and Shenandoah hikes staying this close to the park. Nathan and Lumen really go the extra mile for their guests - breakfast treats, vegan items, fresh fruit, fresh cider, etc. Caught one of Nathan's jazz shows in Luray as well. Overall a really fun and relaxing place to stay.
Nathan is the most wonderful host, ever. Two friends and I were coming in for the Luray Triathlon, and spending the entire weekend there. The sculpture garden, artwork, and history of the property is fascinating. I won't take away from your experience by describing it here, but Nathan will give you the most wonderful account of it all. Nathan had fruit for us, and even made us some incredible blueberry pancakes. We all wish we could have stayed longer, and look forward to going back. Thank you for such a wonderful experience, Nathan! Looking forward to seeing you again.

Dear Nathan and Lumen,
My boys and I had a great stay in your "church". It is a beautiful home, with a treasure in artworks. The many sculptures fit nicely in the beautiful mountainous setting. It was especially nice to receive freshly baked Muffins in the morning!
We had such a wonderful few days at Nathan and Lumen's wonderful mountaintop artist's retreat over labor day weekend. The photos cannot possibly do this place justice. The interior of the church (now home) is perfectly executed - with vibrant colors and art that just constantly surprises and entertains. Even on our third and final day, we kept noticing something new! The kitchen was very well appointed with quality appliances and the hosts were very generous with fruit, local corn, a bottle of wine, and delicious chocolates. Every morning Nathan or Lumen appeared with home-baked muffins and even banana bread later on in the day! They were so gracious, warm, and friendly. Our 16-month-old daughter and dog were greeted happily and easily accommodated. The lodgings are comfortable for family or close friends as the bedroom/bed downstairs doesn't have too much privacy, but it's so fun tucked away behind the fireplace. We enjoyed walking 7-10 minutes to the fire road which leads into Shenandoah National Park and the connects with the Appalachian Trail about one mile up the road. One morning we took the AT trail down to Lewis Falls. We hope to be back to enjoy this wonderful, peaceful retreat again. Nathan also warmly invited us to his Sunday evening Jazz performance, which we were sad to miss due to an early bed time for our little one. The sculpture garden is just delightful and we very much enjoyed strolling around the grounds and also eating outside. Bugs were not an issue thanks to the hosts generously providing bug spray. Beds were comfortable and the jacuzzi bath tub was a plus. Thank you for a wonderful stay -- we hope to be back!
