(1) NATURE abounds. ( For, besides being situated in The Shenandoah National Park, The Estate has its own natural splender : with a private, (2-acre) Sculpture-park to relax and enjoy. Then, there is a "healthy" 2.5 mile HIKE ( Up, UP ) to the park's Big Meadow Resort (restaurant & lodge) by hiking up the fire-road * a 1/4 mile away from the "Church" Estate.

(2) ART : As a private ARTIST- Estate ( a residence, studio, and gallery) for nearly 50 years, Our guess are most always startled by our "amazing" collection of (museum-quality) ORIGINAL- ART (paintings, sculptures, & interior furnishings). Indeed, guests will be inclined to journey ...Into "The world of The Imagination".

(3) MUSIC : Since, Nathan ( the Host) is a accomplished, professional, "Jazz-Musician, guests are invited to a "LIVE" JAZZ-Concert (on Sunday evenings ( 6-9) * at The historic Mimslyn Inn (on Main Street / the town Luray, VA).

History : The Tanners Ridge mountain-top "church" was once known as "The All Saint's Mission Church ( and School)" from 1921 to 1964 * that served the mountain-settlers (after they were displaced upon the making of The Shenandoah National Park). My parents purchased the abandoned (3-building) church-property in 1965 and over the course of a few years, transformed it into a private ARTIST-residence (studio & gallery) * later purchasing 3 joining acreage for adding a Sculpture-park.

The REK ART-Estate (as it is officially recognized) represent a truely AUTHENTIC "Art-Space" ( for Originality and "free-thought") for nearly 50 years.

My father, Painter and sculptor. ROBERT E. KUHN (.com) * (1917-2000) spanded a professional career of nearly 60 years. But, upon establishing his studio-residence on the Tanners Ridge church-property in the mid 1960's, he resorted to a most private and reclusive life (while retaining a most productive work-schedule).

His son, "Nathan"- was also an accomplished "Pop" Sculptor for over 25 years( LA, NYC, L.I. "Hamptons", NY, Wash.DC) * that accounts for "ALL the CRAZY COLORS" - in the church-interior). He (and his wife, Lumen) moved in place - to take charge (to manage The REK Art-Estate) upon his Father's passing in July of 2000.

ACTIVITIES: LOTS TO DO! : We offer a special Vacation get-away for "Fun", privacy, quiet & relaxation,... a casual walk and HIKING-trails - EVERYWHERE ! ( ... into "Birding", too, oh SURE).

Sure, so, its a gentle "home-space" to retreat to. THEN, off the mountain : First, there is the BUDDIST-Retreat (farm) at the base of Tanners Ridge mountain * with a world-wide reputation for excellence. Next - is the Jordan Hollow Horse-stables (trail-rides) * on the way to Wisteria Vineyards (for a relaxing wine-tasting stop). Then, to stroll Shenandoah Valley's small towns ( like the little city of Luray- 11 miles north) - for shopping, restaurants & ACTIVITIES : The national historic LURAY CAVERNS ( full-day events), our ZOO and water-park, the "fun" FLEA-Markets (barns) & antique-shops & MORE.

SURE, so there's the wineries, Civil-War historic-tours, horse-stables, fishing & canoeing, hiking & biking ( the numerous triathlons) OH SURE! LOTS to do.

Lastly, OUTSTANDING Reviews : (ala "AMAZING" PLACE .and SUPERIOR Hosts" * they like my hot breakfast "treats" of hot--muffins & blueberry/nut pancakes, I bet).

for your booking-consideration. ( Hey, "There's-NOTHING-LIKE-IT", I Promise !

About Nathan Kuhn and Iluminada (Lumen) Kuhn

Nathan Kuhn, a professional Sculptor and Jazz-Musician - had been living in Shelter Island, "The Hamptons" of N.Y. with his wife, Iluminada Kuhn. In 2000, they relocated to Stanley, Virginia - .and to the former church property and private Artist- residence of his father, Robert Kuhn - in order to serve as the resident-managers of the 'Family' home (upon his passing). Nathan's skills as a Sculptor ( and builder) served well in the needed art-restorations ( and repairs ) * and his Wife's wonderful "cooking" - was well appreciated by their infrequent house-guests

( father's ART-Clients) and such celebrities as J. PETERMAN. Please note: This is the first time - that the private, family-home ( known as The REK -Art-Estate) is made "public" * by accommodate house-guests. Lastly, We believe we can offer to our visitors - a most restful and memorable vacation getaway.

OH. Welcome to "Live" JAZZ : Sunday-evenings (7-9:30) at the historic Mimslyn Inn, "Speakeasy" Bar & Restaurant (in downtown Luray). For, our Guests are able to see their Host , "Nathan" ( as a Professional Musician) - perform with his JAZZ-Trio, "The Cafe Society". (His stage-name is "Denny Toyy" and represents a handful of Jazz-HARMONICA Soloists in America, today. ENJOY a most 'special' musical-performance * offering the ONLY weekly "Jazz" outside of Wash. D.C.

Nathan Kuhn and Iluminada (Lumen) Kuhn purchased this estate in 1966

Why Nathan Kuhn and Iluminada (Lumen) Kuhn chose Shenandoah Valley

This UNIQUE property (that was once 'The All Saints Mission-Church' (1921-1964) for the mountain-settlers) was purchased by an established, Wash.D.C "Sculptor" (1964) and who then proceeded to transformed the abandoned property into a MAGNIFICENT ART-Estate : ( a Studio-Gallery * secluded (2-acre) Sculpture-Garden & Residence) over the next 35 years. Guests will be introduced to a truely FASCINATING story : The secluded life of a gifted ARTIST (surrounded by an AMAZING collection of his personal (and 'original' ) ART (from Paintings, Sculptures, and Drawings, to his own 'home-furnishing' * as tables , lamps). Indeed, (Artist) ROBERT KUHN (my Father) - dearly LOVED his gentle,"creative" life on the mountain (* as was his wishes) : to keep (and to maintain) his residence as the "family" Home). ACTIVITIES : Yes, the guest-house (property) location is OUTSTANDING ! (1) For, our Guests are surrounded by The Shenandoah National Park ( and only a short * 2 miles "hike" (up the fire-road) to the historic BIG MEADOWS Restaurant & Resort (on SKYLINE Drive) * but, to drive by car would be 45 miles). (2)Then, there are a "dozen" of neighboring "EVENTS" in the town of Luray ( a 12 mile drive) : The Luray Caverns * provides a a full day of activity

( From a tour of the historic Caverns, to the Car & Carriage, and TOY Exhibits, to the local-history museum * with a "pan-for-Gold" demonstration). (3) Then, for History-buffs, ALL the surroundings ( like the Town of New Market) is CIVIL WAR History ( and all throughout Northern Virginia). (4) Of course, the SERIOUS "hiking" (and Biking and Running events) are happening * from early April thru October. (5) Then, there is The Water-Park, the Luray ZOO, "Canoeing" on the Shenandoah river, the local Horse-riding stables. OH! a weekend CAR-RACING track, WINERY tours. In other words, OUR Property offers most EVERYTHING - for a memorable 'get-away' : So, stay at our quaint Mountain-top "church" / on a "secret" Artist-estate).

What makes this estate unique

Nathan Kuhn and his two brothers and one sister believe that there is not an art property of this extraordinary breathe to be found anywhere else. What one sees and experiences HERE is the result of an Artist of profound imagination and creative talent who envisioned an "Estate" which reflected in every detail his imaginary world rendered in wood and welded-steel sculptures ranging in images from Willie Loman to Nero, a military general (on a unicycle) to little, Sailor-suit Robert Kuhn on a unicycle, and from there (and everywhere) to Lida & the Swan to Holden Caufield's (wooden) school desk to mention a mere fraction of the Artist's fascinating creative output in sculpture. Ahh, but the church and museum architecture modeled by Robert Kuhn are an high art form of his own making and the many paintings figurative and abstract which enrich the living environment (church and museum) is soothing and emotional and yet a simultaneously jolting artist's pallate of undiscovered riches which will not be found anywhere else on God's green (& watery) earth.

So, Our Guests will be welcome - to enter into (their own) : " A WORLD OF IMAGINATION (is) ... fancy-free and violently opposed to common sense."

( Adolph Gottlieb & Mark Rothko)

Beautiful, peaceful, extraordinary retreat

  • 5 of 5

We were celebrating our youngest daughter's 18th birthday/graduation and planned some time in the area to visit Luray Caverns and tube down the Shenandoah River. We came across Nathan and Lumen's "art-church", and since our daughter is on her way to art school, we decided that this would be a great treat for her and our other artsy, musician daughter. We really had no idea how incredible it would be! We had to tear ourselves away from the house to go out into the community! Nathan was attentive and told us the fascinating history of the home and the art. The house was beautifully (and very comfortably) furnished. Despite the obvious value of the artwork, we never felt uncomfortable or like we were in a museum. It was cute, homey, and just amazingly beautiful all at once! The beauty didn't end inside. The grounds were not only filled with sculptures, there were many alcoves - all with chairs - where we could just sit and relax. A croquet set outdoors filled a bit of time one evening. There are two televisions, and the girls were able to watch the Tony's, so I'm assuming the reception is fine. Every detail has been seen to here - great appliances, soft sheets, toiletries, and scrumptious muffins in the morning. This is not the place to go if you are looking for complete isolation or aren't a friendly sort. You will be a part of Nathan and Lumen's family including a dog, kitties, and birds who all added to our visit. Our daughters referred to Nathan as "that sweet man" the whole time we were there. We hated to leave so soon and can't wait to return. Thank you for such a wonderful start to our vacation!

Memorable beauty

  • 5 of 5

The beauty of the Shenandoah Mountains is all around, the host is kind and attentive, the breakfast treats were delicious, and the paintings and sculpture which sets this property apart from anyplace we've ever stayed -- is impressive. Truly a unique setting for the legacy of a gifted artist and his family. We were grateful to experience the sculpture garden in perfect weather.

Highly Recommended

  • 5 of 5

Our family has taken note of this rental a few times prior to our stay and looks are definitely not deceiving. This is indeed an Art Lovers Delight, and the accommodations were exemplary. Nathan and Lumen were excellent host and each morning we waited expectantly for whatever breakfast delight they so graciously delivered. They created a fan in our 11 year old son of their delicious muffins and pancakes and his expectations of such fare have since been elevated to say the least. Nathan shared the storied history of the family patriarch's art, which can be found in almost every inch of our accommodations and across the mountain side getaway. When we left we felt honored to have shared such experience with Nathan, Lumen and his brother as well. We spent hours exploring our cottage,. alone, discovering more sculptures, paintings and other creations than we could count. Likewise we spent a significant amount of time walking the around and through the sculpture garden. Highly recommend you spend mornings there as the sun rises. One of the highlights was being able to have an Easter Egg hunt and watching our son wind his way through such a fantastical setting. As other's note, it is a short walk to the forest road that takes you up to Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park. We had a wonderful spring hike and nearly stumbled into the deer as they nonchalantly made their way around us. Making our way down the mountain was just as expectant as going up and seeing the Artist getaway in the distance was welcome sight indeed. We brought our African Grey Parrot and Lovebird along and they were quite at home and welcomed, as well, by Nathan and Lumen's own lovely birds. If you do get the chance. Definitely take time to see Nathan perform in Luray on a Sunday evening. The food was excellent and Nathan and his band kept us at the venue far longer than expected. Thanks Nathan and Lumen for assuring our family will have lifelong memories cherish. Amy. Tyler and I will definitely come back...hopefully sooner than later. Troy

Absolutely prefect Artist Retreat

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we pulled up in the driveway we knew we had found a special place. Nathan and Lumen, the proprietors are wonderful hosts and have spared nothing in sharing their home with visitors. The "church" has a great vibe, its decorated in a charming and whimsical way. You truly feel like you are in an art gallery. It makes you smile to be in the space. There were two of us (adults) and our black lab. We are used to packing everything we could possibly need when we rent a new place or return to one. There was no need to bring anything with us other than our own food. Everything worked great and just when you thought "darn it" I left that at home... not to worry its there! The house is comfortable, the beds very sleep inducing and there are plenty of spaces to be quite, read, sit and think, nap, listen to great music, make art, watch TV and or just enjoy being. There is a private deck off the second floor bedroom that is perfect for sitting in the afternoon sun and we enjoyed HH in jackets and warm sunshine. Inside is warm and cozy and I just loved coming to the coziness of the space after spending time outside in the SCULPTURE Garden... yes there is a lovely sculpture garden and while its winter and things were bare you could tell that the spring, fall and summer would be spectacular. The "church" is very close to the Shenandoah National Forest, and Appalachian Trail ... great hiking. And the sculpture garden is a great place to stretch your legs too! If you are into new, glass, and glitter find a different place. If you have art in your heart you may visit and NEVER WANT TO LEAVE. We can't wait to go back. It is a wonderful and Nathan is quite the baker surprising us with delicious muffins and yummy pancakes! Ella loved it too and I could tell she would have preferred to stay.

Fun place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying here at Nathan & Lumen's home. The converted church is great - so many artworks and things to see inside. The sculpture garden and outdoor amenities were equally lovely and fun to explore. We planned a hiking vacation and were able to get in several great AT and Shenandoah hikes staying this close to the park. Nathan and Lumen really go the extra mile for their guests - breakfast treats, vegan items, fresh fruit, fresh cider, etc. Caught one of Nathan's jazz shows in Luray as well. Overall a really fun and relaxing place to stay.

Absolutely Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

Nathan is the most wonderful host, ever. Two friends and I were coming in for the Luray Triathlon, and spending the entire weekend there. The sculpture garden, artwork, and history of the property is fascinating. I won't take away from your experience by describing it here, but Nathan will give you the most wonderful account of it all. Nathan had fruit for us, and even made us some incredible blueberry pancakes. We all wish we could have stayed longer, and look forward to going back. Thank you for such a wonderful experience, Nathan! Looking forward to seeing you again.
