In the heart of the Catskill Mountains, on the shore of the Hudson River, in the solice of 101 acres of old growth forest; Shakespeare on the Hudson is amazing.
We originally rented the lodge but due to a last minute cancellation we were offered the yellow house. What an amazing house it was! There were in total 18 of us there and it never felt crowded, we probably could have had 50 and it would have felt just as spaced out. The master suite has an amazing bathtub overlooking the river and the sunrise, two great rocking chairs, and extremely comfortable bed and a loft with an additional queen in it (separated by a curtain, stairs and another door) this loft has the best views and perhaps the most comfortable bed in the house. There was plenty to keep us entertained, televisions, a pool table, a massive farm table to play card/games on. The dogs were in heaven. The hot tub was perfect, underneath you can plug your iPhone in, a tip from Bud. Kat and Suede are truly amazing and were always available. Bud and (his brother) checked up on us and were super friendly, a great bunch of folks working for the property. The kitchen was sufficient enough to get all our cooking done for 18. The stove is only a four top which made it a tad difficult for cooking "family breakfast" but truthfully, everyone was on different sleep schedules so it really didn't matter. The three suites downstairs are an easy lead out to the hot tub and fire pit (we never motivated to get down there due to the extreme cold, but talked a big talk to do so.) The only drawbacks that aren't even that big of a deal 1. the upstairs gets pretty warm at night, the room with the two twins is almost unbearably hot 2. getting to the porch that is an easy lead to the hot tub (have i mentioned how awesome the hot tub is?) is a trek from the rest of the house (there's a window in the kitchen that could easily convert to a door if you're thinking of any remodeling jobs guys!) but it isn't terribly difficult to walk the extra two rooms to get there.
It began to snow while we were up there and were very accommodating when we were discussing if we should try to risk the trek back to the city or stay another night. Our hearts wanted to stay, but knowing there was a foot of snow on the way we decided to head home. Bud mentioned they're building an even larger property soon. Hopefully we'll be the first to book it!
Thanks so much for an AMAZING New Years!
Amazing River Setting and spectacular event venue, Shakespeare on the Hudson was wonderfully comfortable and intimate for our party of 30 friends and relatives.
What can I say this house has it all!
This is my second time staying at one of the Shakespeare on the Hudson properties and it's true when they say "second time's the charm"!
Our first trip to the Catskills, we stayed at the Hudson Hotel, and while it was gorgeous, we did not have a pleasant experience. And when I say that, I don't mean the property, but the overall experience with the locals. However when I explain the circumstances of our first visit, the kind folks at Shakespeare On the Hudson were determined to change our minds, and offered to let us check out the Yellow House for a weekend.
Before I get into the description of our stay, I must talk first about the employees at Shakespeare on the Hudson, which is undoubtedly the true asset to this amazing property.
I had the pleasure of working with the booking agent for this property for over a year; Kat, and her the team are some of the nicest warmhearted individuals you will ever have the pleasure to work with. She is truly the heart of the property and goes above and beyond to make sure all visitors feel welcomed informed and well prepared for their stay.
As you can imagine with the property this big is very important to be able to stay in contact with the caretakers and other folks that can help you with any questions.
The property itself is simply beautiful! Breathe-taking views and the house is charming and well decorated with a rustic feel. It's quite spacious and we had a group of people come with us to make memories that will last a life time.
There are three things to note about this property -- the property uses well water, which is harmless but quite stinky. Bring lots of incense and scented bubble bath. We went in October and the Jacuzzi and pool were perfect, also there is a fire pit to warm up by if you want to roast some marshmallows. Last but not least, this is place is a photographers dream come true, there are so many wonderful places to take amazing photos.
I arranged this for my family and I was so embarrassed. We have used VRBO for 20 years and I have never written a negative review...before this.
We were ready and excited for "rustic charm". This house was simply dirty and not maintained well. Chipped paint in bathrooms, no shower curtains in some of the bathrooms, strong musty odor in downstairs bedrooms. I specifically asked KAT, before I signed a contract, if the home had central air and she replied"yes". The home did not have central air, only 3 small portable units that did not come close to cooling this huge home. The bedrooms reached 85 degrees at night. There was not a single screen on a door or window in the entire house. This made opening any doors or windows impossible due to the bugs. Why not have any screens?? The guests in the bottom 2 bedrooms had to check in to the hotel (the owner's) for the last two nights as the room was unbearable to stay in due to no AC. We paid top dollar for this home and did not expect to deal with the onslaught of issues the week were there. We never heard from the owner or Kat again. Bud, the maintenance man tried as best he could but portable units had to be emptied of water every couple of hours or they shut off completely...who wants to deal with that on vacation? The kitchen was filthy and the appliances were at least 30 years old and really dirty. The kitchen was not equipped to make a meal for 22 people! The linens on the bed were thin and the scratchy and the towels provided were "oversized hand towels". The pool is covered in rust. There were no chairs by the pool, then when we asked they brought 2 over. We had 20 people there. There were three small rickety old wood chairs on the front porch for seating. There were cigarette buts allover the front porch when we arrived. As I mentioned, we were ready for the rustic charm as it was described in the VRBO listing. Ralph Lauren's name should not be associated with this home. We would have been more comfortable in tents. The view was fabulous. The kayaks were far and had a snake and lots of spiders in them. The home was just not well maintained and the problems were not able to be fixed in a 5 night stay. I spoke with the owner upon our return, he said he would refund the Hotel stay, but never did. We were so disappointed in the home. The owners eloquent description on VRBO does not describe the home we stayed in...not by a long shot.
Shakespeare on the Hudson was the perfect location for our family reunion. With thirty people ranging in age from eight months to mid seventies, we were a big and eclectic group, but the River Lodge met everyone's needs. Lots of space, a beautifully appointed house, plenty of big areas for congregating and socializing, an enormous lawn which was perfect for impromptu team sports, a fire pit for s'mores, and of course the beautiful Hudson River right there-- this house truly has it all. The kids had fun swimming in the pool outdoors and playing pool indoors, and the kitchen was big enough for many cooks at once. (One suggestion: the kitchen could use a couple of large cooking pots and large serving bowls). The walls are surprisingly thick-- noise traveled between the rooms right next to each other but not from one part of the house to another. Bob was quick to send Dave over to fix the kitchen door that was stuck, and he was friendly and fixed it quickly. We loved being there in the summertime and took full advantage of swimming and kayaking in the river, hiking the trails, and chasing fireflies in the woods, but this house seems ideally suited to every season.
We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the house, but the last night we ate at the Stewart House's River Garden, a beautiful B&B and restaurant that is part of Shakespeare on the Hudson. Kim was very helpful in accommodating our group and arranging for a tasty buffet that met our food requests and pleased all age groups.
Everybody agreed that we should have our next reunion at Shakespeare on the Hudson again!
The property and house are spectacular - sprawling, private, funky, yet convenient to transportation and services! The house was in great shape and the property managers were unobtrusive yet responsive. Wonderful experience!
