Our family stayed in Sea Otter for week this past August, and loved everything about the cottage, its comprehensive amenities, and fabulous location. You are (quite literally) just a stone's throw from the beach, and can BBQ and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the otters and sea lions enjoy the waters of Monastery Beach. We were impressed by the comprehensive kitchen amenities.

We are always apprehensive when booking a vacation rental online from photos however the Whaler's Cottage was everything we could have asked for.

The night before our arrival we stayed at Post Ranch which has always been one of our favorite getaways however as much as we loved Post the Cottage was so enchanting from the time we drove down the private road. The house is immaculate. I must say I am a cootie freak and I was perfectly at ease and comfortable in the home. The beds and linens were super comfortable..the kitchen and baths well equipped. We were even able to order fire wood waiting for us so we had the fireplace going every day.

What is really amazing however is the location. Extremely private in a large fenced property with two other houses right on the beach. The views out every window and the sound of the waves were mesmerizing. To be able to step out your door and take a stroll on the beach is well worth the rental cost. There is also a public walkway that starts next to the property that leads along the beach right to the center of Carmel which we absolutely loved.

Obviously we can't say enough about what this family has preserved generation to generation and we felt privileged to be allowed to share it even for a few days.

We will definitely be returning as soon as we can!

On the beach, location was great.

Great location, on the beach, close to Carmel and other great places. The house is small but very well equipped, clean, comfortable beds and a fun place to just hang out. We loved it so much that we only went out for dinner two times. We would like to return next year. We are from Utah so we enjoyed shopping at Trader Joes, nice to be able to chose some great wines. Thanks for being great hosts. Barbara G

A Special Place

  • 5 of 5

If what you're looking for is a functional, charming cottage in a beautiful location steps from Monastery Beach, where you can watch the waves crash against the rocks with your morning coffee, then you've found your place. We enjoyed walking up the coastal trail which starts in the back yard, but were always happy to return to our home-away-from-home among the Eucalyptus trees. A grill and fireplace are provided to take some of the chill out of the Pacific breezes. We couldn't have asked for a better place to relax by the sea.

Keep in mind it's not a swimming beach, so if you're looking for that you probably want to head up to Carmel.

Trust me, I know you're thinking - with these photos and stellar reviews, this place is to good to be true, right? Well, it just IS that good. The Whisler family has done such a tremendous job caring for this special piece of land and the cottages that reside here. I enjoyed reading about the story of this land in the book they provided - such rich history that goes back generations!

Our family of three stayed in Sea Otter for a week in November. It had everything we needed to be comfortable for the week - access to laundry, firewood, BBQ grill, etc. They even left us a bottle of local wine upon our arrival!

Favorite memories of the cottage include: watching the whole ecosystem of animals (literally hundreds of dolphins and birds) at sunrise feed in the bay each daybreak; morning jogs along the path that lines the beach; relaxing on the patio with a book and a glass of wine in the afternoons; cozy fires in the evening - and how can I forget the stunning sunsets each evening? Unprecedented.

The Sea Otter cottage, tucked behind a cute one-room schoolhouse on Highway 1 and adjacent to a beautiful path that lined the ocean, provided a great home base for our adventures nearby to Big Sur, Santa Cruz, Monterey Aquarium, Redwood Forest - I have a new-found love for this part of California. It was truly stunning. We even had an exciting wind and rainstorm during our stay - it was so exciting to be at the sea-shore watching the waves crash and hearing the eucalyptus branches whipping around overhead - it made us feel so alive and connected to the environment - a really cool experience.

We will most definitely be back!

Heaven on earth

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Sea Otter Cottage. Everything about this place is special. The cottage is comfortable and so well appointed. There is no better location for a relaxing and picturesque vacation. The beach is beautiful, and the surroundings and the history of this special place are really interesting. Sara and Patrick are great hosts. Gorgeous sunsets. Beautiful walks on the beach. The nearby Point Lobos State Park is not to be missed - probably the most beautiful park in CA. We plan to return every year.
