Our family stayed in Sea Otter for week this past August, and loved everything about the cottage, its comprehensive amenities, and fabulous location. You are (quite literally) just a stone's throw from the beach, and can BBQ and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the otters and sea lions enjoy the waters of Monastery Beach. We were impressed by the comprehensive kitchen amenities.

A Special Place

  • 5 of 5

If what you're looking for is a functional, charming cottage in a beautiful location steps from Monastery Beach, where you can watch the waves crash against the rocks with your morning coffee, then you've found your place. We enjoyed walking up the coastal trail which starts in the back yard, but were always happy to return to our home-away-from-home among the Eucalyptus trees. A grill and fireplace are provided to take some of the chill out of the Pacific breezes. We couldn't have asked for a better place to relax by the sea.

Keep in mind it's not a swimming beach, so if you're looking for that you probably want to head up to Carmel.

Trust me, I know you're thinking - with these photos and stellar reviews, this place is to good to be true, right? Well, it just IS that good. The Whisler family has done such a tremendous job caring for this special piece of land and the cottages that reside here. I enjoyed reading about the story of this land in the book they provided - such rich history that goes back generations!

Our family of three stayed in Sea Otter for a week in November. It had everything we needed to be comfortable for the week - access to laundry, firewood, BBQ grill, etc. They even left us a bottle of local wine upon our arrival!

Favorite memories of the cottage include: watching the whole ecosystem of animals (literally hundreds of dolphins and birds) at sunrise feed in the bay each daybreak; morning jogs along the path that lines the beach; relaxing on the patio with a book and a glass of wine in the afternoons; cozy fires in the evening - and how can I forget the stunning sunsets each evening? Unprecedented.

The Sea Otter cottage, tucked behind a cute one-room schoolhouse on Highway 1 and adjacent to a beautiful path that lined the ocean, provided a great home base for our adventures nearby to Big Sur, Santa Cruz, Monterey Aquarium, Redwood Forest - I have a new-found love for this part of California. It was truly stunning. We even had an exciting wind and rainstorm during our stay - it was so exciting to be at the sea-shore watching the waves crash and hearing the eucalyptus branches whipping around overhead - it made us feel so alive and connected to the environment - a really cool experience.

We will most definitely be back!

Heaven on earth

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Sea Otter Cottage. Everything about this place is special. The cottage is comfortable and so well appointed. There is no better location for a relaxing and picturesque vacation. The beach is beautiful, and the surroundings and the history of this special place are really interesting. Sara and Patrick are great hosts. Gorgeous sunsets. Beautiful walks on the beach. The nearby Point Lobos State Park is not to be missed - probably the most beautiful park in CA. We plan to return every year.

Even better than it looks-amazing property!

What can we say about this outstanding place-it exceeded all our expectations! We couldn’t believe that all the glowing reviews were true; we thought no place could be that perfect. Well, the Sea Otter Cottage is every bit as good as the reviews. We were looking for a quiet place, where we could relax and watch the world go by. Even though it’s near to Highway 1, we could hear very little noise, other than the crashing surf. The views are absolutely spectacular, and we were in awe of all the wildlife we saw from the back patio-dolphins, otters, whales, birds, bunnies, and even a hummingbird that came to visit every morning at the kitchen window. The cottage itself was spotless, well appointed, with a functional kitchen and plenty of room for our family of three. There is a grocery store two miles away, at The Crossroads, so getting food and drink for our week was easy. Our little girl uses a wheelchair, and the Sea Otter cottage was perfect in that it has no stairs, and the living and dining areas are very open. (The bathroom is not fully wheelchair accessible, but there was more than enough room for our needs.) The location is very close to world-class shopping, with Carmel-by-the-Sea minutes away, and all the attractions of Monterey within about 20 minutes away. We also would recommend you give yourself time to stroll the coastal path, which starts at the end of the driveway. It’s about a mile long, an easy walk, with yet more stunning views of the coast. Really made our week away memorable and relaxing-one of the best lodging experiences we have ever had. We felt like we'd really had a VACATION! Thank you to the owners for sharing this lovely space with us. We can't wait to visit again.

Magical!

  • 5 of 5

Such a wonderful and charming little cottage by the sea, close enough to everything yet far enough away to feel completely isolated. Falling asleep to crashing ocean waves and waking up to face the rolling sea was beyond what I imagined. Definitely would come back!

Sea Otter Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had two weeks of ocean side excellence. The cottage is stocked with more than essentials - all we had to do was obtain groceries at The Crossroads less than 2.5 miles away. The cabin isso close to MMonetary Beach that we saw whales and dolphins from the kitchen and living room windows. Purely excellent experience.
