I left a brand new huge school in 1965 to move here from the Chicago suburbs with my parents and new baby brother. My father was so proud to show me the 2 room schoolhouse where I was going to attend first grade the following year I remember crying in the car and proclaiming that " I'm not going to go to school in someone's house! " We moved into the Wilderness Lodge and it became our private home ending the business it had been as one of the original housing options at Burke Mountain. My mother wasn't too sure what she was getting herself into moving from the city to Vermont and was scared of the bears but quickly grew to love it and the friendliness of the people here. Things have changed somewhat since then. That 2 room schoolhouse is now The East Burke School, a private secondary school. The public grade school has grown with the town and now has more than 2 rooms but still has the same small community feel that you will experience when you visit Burke. (It's still not even close to the size of that school I left!) I am now proud that I was fortunate enough to have gone to a two room schoolhouse. After leaving for a while to work in Boston at MGH, I have returned to Burke and have no intention of leaving again. (Except to visit the ocean with family members who live in more urban settings. That's where we vacation if we're not visiting other mountain towns.) My "little" brother, Gary now lives in upstate New York and has a family of his own. He remains very connected to the property and community here. My husband Stuart is a native Vermonter. He is a self employed carpenter who is responsible hands on for the latest Wilderness renovation as well as the new LCD TV. The available books and games were more my idea. He has lived in Montana and Hawaii as well but also chose to come back to Vermont. We live nearby with our dogs, Annie and Donnie. We enjoy everything that the outdoors has to offer and are happy to share it all with you
Since the passing of my parents we are pleased to return the house to it's roots by opening it up once again for guests to enjoy! We have retained the original name, Wilderness Lodge, in order to give a nod to bringing history forward.
Great location and only minutes from East Burke village. Access to the Kingdom trails was awesome, especially if you are looking to ride some of the more technical trails around the ski area, being further up mountain road gave you a good head start climbing up to the trails.
The house was clean as a whistle, plenty of space for everybody. The big kitchen was also a plus.
Will look to stay here again and would recommend this property to anyone who asks.
Tanya & Stuart were very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. Great open floor plan and back terrace provided lots of social gatherings. Updated kitchen was a plus for dining in. Only two opportunities for greater comforts, new mattresses on the older beds and a fire pit in the back yard would be great. Small Weber grill didn't provide enough flame to do the job, might want to check connection. Overall five star rating from the group, would definitely go back.
You couldn't ask for more at the Wilderness Lodge. Amazing meals were prepared in the gourmet kitchen with fresh herbs from the garden. We played bocce ball on the front lawn. The home was immaculate with a great book collection and plenty of room for everyone with cozy linens and pillows. We have stayed at many places in East Burke and the Wilderness Lodge was a perfect location for all of our biking and hiking adventures. Many thanks Tanya and Stuart for your warmth and hospitality.
We were 3 family sharing this beautiful house. We liked the big modern kitchen, the dining room and the 2 living room was perfect for kids on one side and parents on the other one! The house was very clean and big enough for all of us.
Nice backyard to play outside. The room are spacious and bed should be a little more confortable.
Tanya and Stuart were very nice, it was such a nice rental experience, we look forward to come back!
Beautiful home pretty close from burke Mtn (and DH trail).
Nice backyard with a small bbq. Not enough space for football, but perfect for relaxing and play with the kids.
4 closed rooms, (we were 8 and it was really ok).
Get ready to a 20-30 min bicycle ride back (uphill!) when you finish your day at the kingdom trails.
We called the people who weren't biking for a ride back home the second day!
Really great kitchen, pool table not so nice (I guess it's mostly for kids),
Very nice home, very clean and have all what you need!
