Oak floors and trim throughout are complemented by comfortable furniture, modern kitchen and laundry.

4 second story bedrooms. Master suite has its own tub/shower. Also second full bathroom upstairs, half bath downstairs.

New appliances, dishwasher, gas range, and front load laundry off the kitchen. Full traditional dining room for 8+ and breakfast counter seating in the kitchen.

About Ben and Joan Baxter

We have lived here on Mount Desert Island and in Bar Harbor most of our sixty years and we love living in Vacationland.

When we saw this wonderful old house in need of help, we decided we could share our experiences with lots of others.

Ben is a professional carpenter and Joan is an RN at the MDI hospital.

Ben and Joan Baxter purchased this house in 2014

Why Ben and Joan Baxter chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

This house was built by a pair of fishermen brothers in 1906 as a way for them to spread out on their property from the house nearby.

They must have had some good help from someone who really knew this building style. It is a classic style of the period, with high ceilings and 8 good sized rooms.

It has been a farmhouse, boarding house and private residence for several large families in 110 years.

We found it on the market one winter in need of some repair and we thought it had great potential.

The newly renovated kitchen and the new oak floors really caught our eye.

After 18 months and substantial rebuilding and refurbishing, we are pleased to offer it to you for your vacation holiday.

What makes this house unique

This is a taste of 1900 and what it might have felt like to live in the Village of Eden, just outside Salisbury Cove.

The neighborhood is still a series of small farms within easy reach of town, but it has recently added several lobster pound eateries, a brewery and and a winery, and a couple very nice restaurants.

Both Winery tours and a brewery restaurant, both with nice dining and frequent music fare are within five minutes.

You can step down the driveway and aboard the free

Island Explorer Bus , heading into town or anywhere on MDI. Load your bike on the bus bike rack and get to all the carriage trails.

Northeast Creek is just a few hundred yards below us on the road and an easy canoe or kayak launch is right there. You can also walk out through the Audubon sanctuary at the back of the property to meet the creek and marsh with a sweet 1/4 mile walk.

Perfect for two families

We were two families, four adults and five kids. We had a wonderful time. The house itself was in excellent condition, bigger than I imagined from the pictures, with lots of great amenities: fire pit for roasting marshmallows, outdoor grill, modern appliances, nice TV, hammock, room for the kids to run around, etc. The location was perfect, minutes from everything we wanted to do in Acadia. Ben was a friendly and gracious host. Fantastic!

Great Fall get away

This property was perfect for us! We were three couples, high school friends, who traveled to Maine to experience the Fall colors and eat some great Maine lobster. We had a terrific time and the house was great. It had everything we needed to make this trip comfortable and so much fun. It was nice to be close to Bar Harbor but still a bit off the beaten path-or Less Traveled road. Entrance to Acadia National Park was very close as well. From the house there is a great path you can walk to an inlet for bird watching and terrific pictures. Thanks Ben and Joan! We would definitely rent this house again.

Perfect home in every way!

I have stayed in MANY VRBO homes and this is unquestionably the best. First of all, the owner could not have been nicer or more accommodating and was extremely responsive with a couple of questions we had. The house is absolutely immaculate. It was better stocked than any place I have stayed. We felt right at home from the moment we walked in. The location was perfect and was on a very quiet side road. There was no street noise at night at all. It was extremely close to not only downtown Bar Harbor, but also to Acadia National Park. I certainly will recommend this home to my friends.

Great Acadia vacation

This was the perfect house for our family vacation to Acadia this summer. Plenty of space for four adults and three kids to enjoy our time together comfortably. Spacious backyard and on a private road, so kids could run around outside without any concern about cars. They also really enjoyed the collection of games provided at the house.

Ben has provided for everything a guest in his home could possibly want -- my husband had packed a box full of kitchen gadgets and didn't need half of them because everything was already there! He was also happy to spend a little time chatting when he welcomed us, answering questions about the island and offering recommendations for sightseeing and places to buy lobster.

Everything we wanted to see and do was within easy driving distance. Highly recommend!

Great location and wonderful property.

Great house in a very convenient location on Mount Desert Island. Close to Acadia and Bar Harbor only a few minutes drive away.

The inside was clean and spotless with much of it recently remodeled and provided more than enough living space.

The outside yard was large and fairly private with a nice deck for relaxing and grilling and dining outside.

Ben the owner was very gracious, accommodating and a real nice guy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and recommend it!

A perfect place to stay!

Do you like convenience yet quiet? Do you enjoy a spotless house with plenty of space to spread out? Do you like a home base with plenty of options for lobster, shopping, and hiking? Then this is the place for you! We recently rented the house for the Mount Desert Marathon weekend (October) and we couldn't have picked a better place! Turn onto the dirt driveway and notice the Mansard design of the house. It is actually larger than the picture implies. Owner Ben is personable and a wealth of information. Meeting us with fresh vegetables from the garden, fresh flowers on the table, and a fresh bottle of wine was a treat, especially after driving for ten hours! The house is set up for relaxation. The kitchen is spacious and comes supplied with all that you might need - even spices. The downstairs living room is comfortable (we especially liked the instantaneous gas fireplace that warmed the fall chill). There are checkers, chess and a wonderful game table by the picture window. Adjacent to the living room is a formal dining room that can seat at least eight easily. A downstairs office with futon. desk and chair allows one to peruse the information supplied about the island. A half-bath rounds out the living space. Upstairs, four bedrooms and two full baths are wonderfully appointed and spotless. The house is situated about ten minutes from downtown Bar Harbor with restaurants, shopping, and water views. You definitely want to tour Acadia National Park which is only a short drive from the house. Get up early to watch the sunrise on the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the first place in America to see the sun pop at the horizon! Drive the scenic Park Loop Trail to visit places like Thunder Hole and marvel at the power of the Atlantic Ocean. Or, take time out to have the famous popovers at Jordan Pond house. And of course, lobster abounds on the island. Eat at local places where the lobster is fresh off the boat. So much to do! You can't go wrong with renting this house - clean, convenient, and comfortable! Definitely five stars!

Owner's Response: We have greatly enjoyed our correspondence and brief meetings with the ten families since we opened in August 10 weeks ago. We are still in touch with several of them and everyone was very appreciative and respectful of our newly renovated home. Thanks to all of you for a warm and wonderful season. We hope to stay open now past the prime season for weekend and 3 day rentals right up to New Years Week. We think the house is ideal for a full family Thanksgiving week. Christmas and New Years weeks will be very special and we hope to be able to offer catered holiday meals for one or more special family meals in those weeks. Just ask.
